Philosophical Statement
One of my goals as a teacher is to allow students to feel safe and respected in the
classroom. I hope to provide a safe and respecting environment for each child when I become a
teacher. Another goal as a teacher is to build the minds of children. To do this, I will gear lessons
towards the interests of the students in order to gain their attention. Project-based learning will be
incorporated to engage the students. I find that I lean towards a progressivist style of teaching
because I think lessons should be geared towards student interests, education should incorporate
all the needs of a student and students should be the center of education. The following
classroom management techniques will be used to obtain this type of learning environment.
Rules and Expectations
On the first day of school, my students and I will work together to formulate a set of class
rules and expectations. The rules will be written on poster board and hung in the classroom for
the entire year. Each student will sign the poster stating that they agree to the rules. The list of
class rules would also be sent home to the parents to help them understand the classroom
environment I am striving for. In my classroom, I will base my rules off of the school policies
and be sure to enforce them. In addition, I will use a step system for bad and inappropriate
behavior. The first step is a verbal warning to the student. Next, the student would complete a
behavior reflection. The behavior reflection is an opportunity for the student to think about what
they did wrong and how they can fix it in the future. If the student misbehaved again, I would
call home and the next time a student misbehaved, he would get an after-school detention. These
steps would be for one type of behavior. If a student was late, he would receive a verbal warning.
If the same student was using his cell phone in class, he would receive another verbal warning
because it is a different behavior. Although not every situation can follow the steps perfectly, I
will use my best judgement. For example, if a student physically assaults another student, that
answers to questions posed to the entire class, completing class work, and being engaged in
class. If a student wants to share something with the class, he must raise his hand in order to
share. If a student does not raise her hand when sharing, the behavior steps will be followed.
Working in Groups- Students will work in groups very frequently during labs and
classwork. As a result, I will discuss the rules and expectations for lab groups and classwork
groups on the first day of school. I will expect that students participate while working in groups.
If one student does all the work while another does very little to no work, their grades will be
appropriately affected.
Motivation
Everyday in my classroom, I will strive to motivate all my students. The University of
Nebraska-Lincoln developed tips on motivating students and I think they prove to be helpful in
motivating them. To motivate my students, I will pay attention to their strengths and weaknesses
to ensure their success. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln suggests to, Reward their strengths
and strengthen their weaknesses (Twenty, N.D.). I think this tactic will enable all students to be
confident in their work and will motivate students to complete their work since they understand
how to do it. Another way I will motivate my students is through my expressions and attitude. I
will be sure to smile and reassure students that they can do it. I will remain confident that a
student can do something when they tell me they cannot. This will boost the childs self-esteem
and give the student motivation to complete the assignment.
Vision
At the beginning of every day, students will come in and sit down in their assigned seats.
Students will begin the warm-up that is posted on the projector. When the students have
completed the warm-up, they will turn it in with the homework from the previous day and they
will pick up any papers that will be used for the days assignment. The students can check the
board for the objective and the things that will be accomplished in class that day. If the board
states that we will be taking notes, students will have their notebooks out and ready to begin. If
the board states that we will be completing a lab, students will be in their assigned lab groups
ready to begin working after my instruction. Students will remain on task for the duration of the
class period and will turn in completed work at the end of class. When there are five minutes
remaining of class, students will come back to their assigned seats to allow me to wrap-up class
and assign homework.
Conclusion
These strategies will be implemented in order to obtain a safe and respectful environment
and to build the minds of children. Without classroom management, my classroom will be hectic
and no learning will take place. In order to ensure that students are learning and feel safe and
respected, I need to establish the rules and expectations stated.
