Installation Instructions for Type A Screens

There are three separate parts to each screen assembly, plus bolts and gaskets:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.

Frame, consisting of curved acceleration plate, support ribs and foot bracket.
Screen material with locating hooks.
Clamping plate to hold the material in place (supplied with M10 stainless steel set screws and
washers which fit into captive nuts on the foot bracket).
An EPDM or Nitrile rubber gasket to place between each screen section.
Stainless steel lock nuts, bolts & washers for bolting frames together side to side (not supplied).
Stainless steel expansion bolts, wedge/sleeve anchors, resin anchors, or other concrete fixings
(not supplied)
Grout or good quality mastic to seal the screen to the weir structure (not supplied).

Please refer to drawings AQS-001 and AQS-002 for more details. The screens and frames are all
made from 304 stainless steel (unless specified otherwise) and are acid cleaned before shipping.
Installation Procedure
1. Remove the screen material from the frame by undoing the bolts at the bottom of the frame,
removing the bottom clamping plate and then sliding out the screen material from underneath the
acceleration plate. Put the screen material back in the crate to prevent accidental damage while the
frames are installed.
2. Position the frames on the weir structure this may require lifting gear. Remember to insert a
gasket between them if supplied, which can be held loosely in place with the side-to-side bolts. Check
that all the screens will fit between the wing walls before drilling any fixing holes if there is insufficient
space, one or more gaskets can be omitted.
3. The order of installation will depend on the type of fixing used. If sleeve anchors are used then
holes can be drilled with the frames in place the 13mm fixing holes will allow for a 12mm masonry
bit. Otherwise, mark up the position of the holes, remove the frames and then drill. Ensure that the
concrete is of good quality and is fully cured before drilling, and that the holes are at least
50mm from any surfaces. The concrete should be designed such that the fixings do not coincide
with any reinforcement bar.
4. Once the frames are fixed in their final position, with a rubber gasket between each frame, they can
be bolted together side-to-side. All mounting and fixing bolts should initially be done up loosely to
allow the frame positions to be adjusted before all the bolts are finally tightened up. All threads must
be lightly covered with anti-seize grease stainless steel fittings can weld themselves together if
this is not done.
5. After all the frames have been firmly fixed in place the sheets of screen material can be installed.
The top of the screen material will fit into the slot underneath the bottom edge of the acceleration plate
at the top of the frame. There are also hooks on the back of the screen material, which locate on the
round horizontal frame bars. A full sheet of screen material weighs 47kg, so at least two people will
be required to lift it into place. It is important that the screen material is installed in the correct
orientation (if it is installed upside down the capacity will be practically zero). The surface will feel
rougher in one direction (due to the tilt of the wedge wires), and this is the direction of water flow. The
orientation of the locating hooks will prevent incorrect installation, and there may also be direction of
flow stickers.
6. At the bottom, the screen material is held in place with the bottom clamping plate. This fits on top of
the screen material and is held in place with M10 x 40 stainless set screws (supplied) that fit into the
captive (welded) nuts inside the bottom front of the frame. There should be a washer for each screw.
7. Finally the gap between the outer screens and the concrete can be filled with grout or good quality
mastic to give a watertight seal. Any gaps under the leading edge of the acceleration plate should
also be filled.

Health & Safety

Follow site-specific rules and risk assessments. In addition you should:
wear gloves when handling screens and frames, as they may have sharp edges
use the appropriate number of people to lift each screen or frame into position
wear eye and ear protection when drilling holes in concrete
read and follow the COSHH sheets for any grease products or sealants used.
