Diospyros tomentosa

Family : Ebenaceae (of the ebony wood).

Latin name : Diospyros = fruit of the god: tomentosa = densely covered
with short, soft tangled hair.
English name : Gaub tree or Embroypteris.

Scientific classification: Persimmons make up the genus Diospyros, of

the family Ebenaceae. The common persimmon is classified as
Diospyros virginiana and the Japanese persimmon as Diospyros kaki.

Sanskrit Names : Tinduk, Neelsar, Atimuktak, Sphurjak, Tushta.

Syandan, Raman, Rava, Asitkarak, Gabha, Tendu. (Leaves are used for
preparing bidi.)

Botanical Description : This is a medium sized tree. Its shade is thick

since the branches are full of green leaves which are used in preparing
bidi. Trunk - bark is grey or black in colour. Trunk is hard and black and
is used in making furniture.
Leaves - green, slimy and long, arranged in two rows, flowers . white,
fragrant.
Fruits - round and hard like marbles. Raw fruits are green and astringent
to taste while the ripe ones are yellow and sweet. Every fruit contains 6
to 8 kidney shaped seeds.

Habitat : All over India. Madhya pradesh, Maharashtra.

Chemical composition : Raw fruit contains tannin, pectin and glucose.

Properties:

Guna : laghu, ruksha;

Rasa : kashaya;
Virya : sheeta; (ripe fruit is madhur and guru);
Dosha kapahpittashamak.

External uses : Its hemostatic and antiinflammatary properties are useful

in wound healing (fruit or bark powder). Gargling helps in stomatitis,
uvulilis. Douche is useful in leucorrhoea.
Internal uses:
Fruit or bark decoction is used in diarrhoea and dysentery. In bleeding
disorders and other diseases of the blood, ripe fruit syrup or bark
decoction is used. Chewing of tablets prepared from the bark acts as
antitussive Also useful in diabetes, spermatorrhoea, premature
ejaculation, menorrhagia, leucorrhoea, hiccups, skin disorders, typhoid
fever and poisoning.
Parts used : Bark; raw fruit, ripe fruit, seeds, oil of seeds.
Dose : Decoction 40 to 80 ml.; powder of seeds - 2 to 3 gms.; oil - 10 to
20 gms. Srotogamitva
Dosha : Kaphaghna, pittaghna, (raw fruit - vataghna).
Dhatu : Rakta, rasa, shukra.
Mala: Purisha (dysentery, diarrhoea), Mutra (diabetes).

Persimmon
Persimmon, common name for trees of a genus of the ebony family. The
common persimmon is native to the eastern United States, growing wild
from Connecticut and Iowa south to Florida and Texas; it grows up to 15
m (up to 50 ft) and has oblong leaves and unisexual flowers. The edible
fruit is a large berry about the size of an apricot, with a tomatolike skin;
it is extremely astringent until very ripe, when it becomes sweet and
palatable. The persimmon tree yields a heavy, hard, close-grained wood
that is used for shuttles and bobbins in the textile industry and for golfclub heads and other sports equipment. The Japanese persimmon is

cultivated in the warm sections of the United States, particularly in

California, for its fruit.
