Inverter
Cyclone wind turbines can be used in conjunction with any suitable inverter. Joliet Technology
highly recommend the use of SMA Windy Boy inverters which are manufactured and configured to
order by SMA for Cyclone wind turbines.
All inverters can be set as AC110V/120V/220V/230V single phase and 50Hz/60Hz output.
Only 5kw, 10kw, 20kw can be supplied with AC380V, three phase output inverters.
Three phase options
For ON grid configurations requiring a three phase output it is advised to
use one SMA inverter for each phase (three inverters) For OFF grid, battery
charging systems Joliet Technology can supply a single to three phase
converter configured to client requirements.

Site Selection
Site selection is the most important factor affecting the performance of your wind turbine!
In almost all locations the wind speed increases, as you get higher off the ground. This is why the taller
the tower the better. As a rule, the turbine should be mounted as high in the air and as far away from
obstructions as is possible.
To find the best location to erect your tower and wind turbine, study the area available and take note
of how the prevailing (most common) winds blow through it. If there are trees, buildings, hills or other
obstructions take note of how high they are and where they are in relation to the prevailing wind
direction and your proposed tower location. The best site for your tower and turbine will be upwind and
above any obstructions which may exist. If there are houses or trees in the surrounding area it is best to
mount the turbine at least twice as high as any obstruction in the area. If the turbine is to be mounted at
the crest of a hill or on a beach where winds come from across the water, a lower tower may be
acceptable.
The next consideration in siting your tower and turbine is the distance from the turbine to your batteries.
The shortest distance will require the least amount of wire and reduce the amount of power lost through
the wiring. If a long distance is required between your tower and the batteries it will be necessary to use
heavy gage wire to reduce the resistance of the wire.
Since the resistance of the wire is directly proportional to its length, making the run shorter will
dramatically reduce the amount of power lost in the wires. The person laying out your power system
should be aware of these considerations when the system is in the planning stages.
Annular anchors need to be set 60to 80along the base direction, check the distance between the
four anchor hooks and the center of the base. The four anchors should be horizontal (as shown in
diagram 3).
Diagram 3
Tower assembly
Insert the main section of tower into the base, then insert the axis pin or bolt into the base and tighten.
Connect each section of tower one by one and place the tower on the supporting stand after
assembly. Pass a flexible conduit through each tube section for cables.
Make sure that the loaded cable is underneath the clamp as shown above.
Attach the two side cables to the side anchors. Attach the rear cable to the rear anchor point.
Allow a small amount of slack in the cables for final adjustment later.
Fit the gin pole and pulley and lay out the guy wires to fix to the front anchor.
Fix the lower pulley on the front anchor. Fix one side of the longest thin wire cable on the pulley of the
supporting pole. Make sure the other side runs through the pulley, and then runs through the upper and
lower pulley. Finally, attach it to a hoist or tractor (as shown in diagram Small units by hand 3kW upwards
by tractor or other vehicle)
CAUTION: NEVER STAND NEAR OR UNDER TOWER, GUYS, OR GIN POLE WHEN RAISING OR
LOWERING TOWER
Raise tower slowly - carefully observing the tension in the side guys. If the side guys become taut, stop
lifting and lower the tower and loosen the side guys that are too tight. Repeat if necessary. Excess
tension in side guys due to anchors being lower than base pivot point will collapse the pipe.
Raise tower until nearly vertical but with tension still on lift cable. A second person or the driver can now
catch the lift pole and lower it gently to the ground. Allowing the lift pole to crash to the ground puts a
serious strain on the back guys and other tower components. At the end of this step, the tower should
be vertical.
Check that the length of cable on the backside guy cables is not too slack or too taut. Minor
adjustments can be made with the turnbuckles, but major adjustments should be made by lowering the
tower and adjusting the length of cable through the cable clamps. Also, check that the cable length
on the side guys is correct. Be sure to lower the tower if any major adjustments need to be made.
Fasten the lift pole to the anchor. Using a long level against the side of the tower toward each anchor,
adjust the lower turnbuckles until the tower is plumb at the base. Sighting up the tower, now tighten the
upper turnbuckles until tower is straight. Guy wires should be just tight enough to eliminate sag.
When the tower is vertical and the guy cables are properly tensioned, practice lowering and raising the
tower several times without the turbine installed.
Once you are comfortable lowering and raising your tower, it is time to install the turbine. Lower the
tower pipe so the end is resting on a support stand near the top guy cables (see below). This stand
should hold the end of the tower pipe approximately 1 meter off the ground. You may need several
wood blocks of different heights to support the tower.
After the turbine is installed, raise the tower following the same procedure as described in the previous
section.
Secure the gin pole to the anchor and make any final adjustments to the tension in the guy cables with
the turnbuckles.
Follow the instructions later in this manual on how to connect the turbine to the controller.
Lift the turbine end of the mast onto a support. Fix the running flange of the turbine to the tower with
bolts. Install the tail assembly (for models up to 2kW) Take care that the generator axis is facing upwards
in order to install the blades, apply a light coating of grease to the turbine shaft.
Install the blade hub and tighten the hub nut with a spring washer. (300W wind turbine has no spring
washer)
It is essential to balance of blades when installing them, this reduces wind noise and badly
balanced blades will cause damage to the wind turbine. Fix the blades without fully tightening
the bolts. Adjust the distance between blades tips to be equal before screwing in all the bolts.
(as shown in diagram 5)
Diagram 5
After adjusting the distance between the blade tips so they are equal, screw down the bolts according
to the order shown in diagram 6 (300W has three blade bolts, screw them down one by one)
Diagram 6
Fit the nose cone.
(For 3kw wind turbine and above) fix the aviation plug on the generator into the
socket of the dogvane, and then install the dogvane (wind direction sensor).
Special attention should be paid to the location of the dogvane. All five holes
must be opposite each other.
After the turbine is installed, raise the tower following the same procedure as
described in the previous section.
Secure the gin pole to the anchor and make any final adjustments to the tension in the guy cables with
the turnbuckles.
Follow the instructions later in this manual on how to connect the turbine to the controller.
Electrical Connection
Batteries should be placed inside buildings which are dry and at a constant temperature.
Choose a suitable place to install the batteries, inverter and controller.
Connect the batteries in series. Connect the anode of first battery to cathode of the second one to
create a series.
Grease the joints well. Install the fuse on the positive electrode of the battery. The distance of
conducting wire between batteries and controller should be less than 3m.
Please refer to suggested battery capacity for various models (as shown above)
It is advised to install a kill switch for use in case of emergency shut down requirement (severe storm
condition for example)
Wiring options off grid battery charging configuration
Note. All the models can be used in an on-grid environment, but only with adherence to local
regulations. An on-grid controller and inverter need to be purchased additionally.

The anemoscope
The anemoscope should be installed on a house roof or in an open area on a
separate mast, and must be vertical. One end of the anemoscope cable
should be inserted into the socket under the anemoscope with the other end
inserted into the appropriate socket in the controller.
3kW and above, off grid wiring diagram (showing wind direction and speed connections).
In its initial state, the control board will indicate auto and
turn-on. When the wind speed reaches or surpasses 2m/s in
this mode, the wind turbine will track the wind direction
automatically. If the batteries are full or the wind speed is too
strong, the turbine will furl automatically until shutdown.
It is also possible to set the wind direction mode to manual
and adjust the turbines direction by pressing forward or
reverse. When the wind speed is too strong or the batteries
are fully charged, the turbine will not shut down automatically.
When the wind turbine is not required to function, you can press
the shutdown button to switch it off. Then the turbine will
automatically face the wind and shutdown.
The system will continuously check the batteries voltage when the system is in its normal power
generating state. The system will alarm automatically when there is over voltage or under voltage. In
case of over voltage, a shutdown order will be sent out. These are the factory settings: over-voltage
alarm is set on 300V, alarm voltage cancellation 280V and under voltage alarm 210V.
The function of the anemoscope is to check the real time wind speed. The states are working or
non-working. In working mode, the system will automatically face the wind and generate electricity.
There are non-wind and over-wind under non-working state. When under non-wind state, the
system shifts into sleeping state. When in over-wind mode, the system will immediately send out a
furling order. The system will go into shutdown.
Following table illustrates the settings on leaving the factory:

Maintenance
Wind turbines may be operated under extremely harsh conditions, or encounter various types of bad
weather. Therefore, examination at set dates and maintenance are necessary in order to keep the
system operating properly.
Before a severe storm, it is advised to lower the tower in order to avoid possible damage or loss.
Maintenance monthly
CHECK MECHANICAL CONDITION
WATCH AND LISTEN FROM THE TOWER BASE. Use binoculars. There should be no mechanical noise,
rattle or vibration. The propeller and tail must not wobble. Lower or climb the tower for inspection, if
indicated. There should be no buzzing either heard or felt with your hand on the tower mast.
INSPECT THE TOWER
Follow all inspection and maintenance requirements of the tower manufacturer. Tighten all nuts and
bolts, especially wire clips. Check for cracks and bent or broken parts at the anchors and base
structure. Check for broken strands and tighten guys.
CHECK THE TURBINE CABLES
Normal use of a wind turbine dictates that the turbine head will turn through 360 degrees from time to
time. Check that the cables from the turbine do not become excessively twisted.
CHECK THE BATTERY
Add only distilled water if needed. (Consult your battery manufacturer.)
Tighten battery connections. Remove corrosion and protect terminals. Wipe tops with baking soda
solution.
Maintenance yearly
LOWER TOWER AND GIVE WIND GENERATOR A COMPLETE MECHANICAL CHECK. FIX OR REPLACE ANY
WORN OR LOOSE PARTS.
1. Check tightness of all tower mounting nuts and bolts and propeller mounting bolts.
2. Check all bearings. Just perceptible play is acceptable.
3. Clean the propeller with mild detergent to remove all dirt and debris. Avoid scratching the surface.
Replace blades if they are cracked or damaged.

Contact your nearest authorized service centre or Joliet Technology to determine the nature of the
problem. Joliet technology will issue a return authorization number (RA number) before you return the
turbine or send you the replacement parts needed to repair the machine. Joliet Technology will pay
least cost return shipping back to the customer. If express is required, the customer will be required to
pay the difference in freight charges.
Safety Information
Wind turbines present mechanical, electrical and chemical (battery) hazards that can be life
threatening.
It is your responsibility to obtain all required permits and engineering certifications for your tower and
tower location. Soil and wind conditions vary and towers and tower foundations must be designed for
your specific location.
Tower must not be able to fall on occupied buildings, neighbours property or power lines. Tower
climbing is dangerous and should be attempted only by experienced personnel using proper safety
equipment. A tilt up guyed tower can eliminate climbing. Locate your mounting mast (tower) well away
from occupied buildings and power lines; a minimum of 100m is recommended.
If the generator appears or sounds loose in the tower or is making an unusual sound, the condition must
be corrected immediately. A loose generator or component will soon damage itself further and may fall
from the tower or loose parts that could be lethal. Never stand in line with a spinning propeller.
Provide climbing protection against all unauthorized persons or children. Never allow an untrained
person or someone without the proper safety equipment to climb the tower. Always stop the propeller
before climbing the tower. Both falling from the tower and contact with the spinning propeller can be
lethal.
High voltage systems (that is, systems with battery voltages of 64 volts and above or the primary side of
any system with a transformer) represent a dangerous shock hazard and could be lethal. All high
voltage systems should be wired and maintained by a qualified and licensed electrician.
Batteries may emit explosive and irritating gas while charging. Never turn on a light switch or make any
other electrical connection or light a match or make any type of spark near a recently-charged
battery. Use protective gloves and eyeglasses when working around a battery. Turn off all loads, wear
safety glasses, and look away when making a final battery connection.
NEVER place objects on top or near the inverter or controller. These devices must dissipate heat
as part of normal operation. FAILURE AND FIRE can result if airflow is blocked.
