Advent, the start of the new Church Year, when we begin to look forward to
the birth of Jesus at Christmas (ten weeks away as I write) falls in November,
towards the end of the calendar year. Endings and new beginnings: our life
consists of these, rolling out across the years. We like to mark such landmark
occasions, pivots on which we hang our lives. We aspire to look forward in
hope, although this can sometimes be quite a challenge - when life surprises
or overwhelms us; and politically, due to Brexit, we could not live in more
uncertain, uncharted times.
However, the time around Remembrance Sunday (13th November) is familiar
territory, when we look back at our nation's history in respect and gratitude,
remembering the courage of the past and the heroes who have given us the
freedoms we continue to be thankful for to this day. We live in a world of
tremendous upheaval and darkness; never has the inextinguishable light of
the Christ-child - and the hope He brings us - been more needed in our world.
We continue to commemorate the Centenary of the First World War. The Bible
Society, in conjunction with the Royal British Legion, has produced a small
collection of psalms, poetry, prayers and hymns: Hear My Cry, subtitled 'words
for when there are no words.' I quote from the books foreword, words written
not by a priest but by a decorated soldier, General the Lord Dannatt: God
does not take sides between countries. However, he is passionately
concerned for the people who live in those countries and get caught up in war.
He made us. He loves us and wants us to love him in return. In peace or war
God is interested in us as individuals. I echo these words.
This Remembrance-tide let us offer our prayers for our serving military
personnel and their families, for those challenged by life-changing injuries and
for those who have lost their lives in war (including civilians) during the past
year: at the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them.
We also pray that peace and justice will prevail in Syria especially in the city of
Aleppo - and all the countries of the Middle East.
Wishing you all a blessed and peaceful Advent,
Reverend Judith

Greenfingers October
We wish to thank all the Villagers and Members who helped to raise 1000 for
West Norfolk Blood Bikes. Sean Moore and David Parrish, representing the
charity, attended the meeting and were delighted to accept the cheque. Over
950 was raised at the Show. Mary Roper sold her wonderful Noah's Ark and
generously donated 25 and club funds provided the remainder.
Two visitors were welcomed. A reminder was given that the annual subscription
of 10 was due at the November meeting. The 2017 programme is complete and
includes speakers on the National Gardens Scheme, Food from your Garden,
Walled Gardens, Rare Plants, A to Z of Bulbs and Clematis. A coach trip and an
evening visit in July are also planned.
Our speaker Neil Callan, aided by his wife Claire, spoke on their retirement
project at Horseshoe Farm, near St Ives, Cambs. In six years they transformed a
acre wilderness of fenland soil, windswept and containing concrete foundations
of a bullock shed, into a verdant garden which they now open for the NGS. It was
a wonderful talk, extensively and explicitly illustrated with slides, relating their
trials and tribulations.
Plant of the Month winners were:
1st Neville Jackson
2nd Margaret Gladman
3rd Judy Woollatt
Next month's meeting on November 8th is the AGM, after which Dr Ian Bedford
from the John Innes Institute in Norwich will speak on Creating a Butterfly Haven.
Visitors are warmly invited to join us.

The car boots have finished for this year now and a BIG thank you to all who have
had a car boot or attended and made a donation. This is currently our only form of
fund raising and the only way we can maintain and add to the equipment on the
field.
As some of you may have seen we now have another Porta cabin on the site
thanks to our former secretary, Claire and R G Carter who donated the cabin
along with Martyn Kay and the late Shaun Dewing who applied for the planning
permission for us. Claire then went above and beyond the call of duty and
managed to enrol the assistance of S C Fabrications (Norwich) Ltd who
generously donated their time and expertise in siting the cabin for us. We are
currently waterproofing and painting this new addition to the field and deciding
how to best use this valuable asset. If anybody who uses the play area would like
to come on the committee and have a say on what we do with the area please
contact us (phone number in back of book) we would be please to hear from you.

Anglian Water
As many of you will know, Anglian Water is the company responsible for your water
and water recycling services. We pride ourselves on delivering great service to our
customers; however we are aware that sometimes local issues can arise, especially
with surface water flooding. Pott Row has a history of localised surface water
flooding after heavy rainfall and we wanted to let you know what we've been doing to
address this. The drainage system in Pott Row is impacted by additional flows of
water coming into the network from surface and groundwater sources. Groundwater
can enter the sewer system (a process called infiltration) when the natural water
table rises. Water tables rise and fall naturally, but are impacted by events such as
rainfall. The groundwater entering the sewer can take up space that would normally
be used to accommodate the water flows that the sewers are designed for, causing
this water to spill over. High volumes of surface water also seem to be entering the
local system, possibly as a result of private drainpipes that have been connected to
the sewer or from other sources such as agricultural or road drains that have been
misconnected. In the same way infiltration reduces capacity; surface water entering
the foul network means that the system can become overwhelmed at times of very
heavy rainfall.
We have taken a series of actions to address these issues, which include:
Balancing the flows of water into and away from the pumping station in Pott
Row to reduce the risk of flooding from the system.
A replacement air valve has been installed on the Pott Row rising main,
which will ensure the system flows correctly.
The whole sewerage network in Pott Row has been surveyed to check for
infiltration.
Two manhole chambers have been sealed to stop rain water getting into the
system.
Two non-return valves have been fitted in the sewerage network, which will
stop flood water travelling back up the pipes and into people's properties.
All of this work should help to reduce the risk of localised flooding. We will be closely
monitoring the impact of these changes over the coming months and will continue to
investigate this matter. In the meantime, if you have any questions please let us know
by emailing public.affairs@anglianwater.co.uk. Alternatively, contact your Borough
Councillor, Cllr Mrs Sue Fraser (Cllr.sue.fraser@west-norfolk.gov.uk) who is
working with us to resolve these issues.

TiddlyPotts
A big HELLO and WELCOME to the new families joining us at TiddlyPotts over
the last few weeks. It's lovely to see some new faces and I hope we've all made
you feel welcome.
Since we opened again for the Autumn Term in September, the children (and
adults!) have enjoyed exploring the new toys we purchased over the summer, the
tiny tiddlers especially like the Ball Pit and the girls love the pink princess dressing
table!! Everyone is enjoying Circle Time, choosing a musical instrument to play
and passing the Nursery Rhyme Bag around the circle and picking out a song to
sing.
Also new this term is our TiddlyPotts Book Exchange where children and adults
can bring in books to swap from home with others. A fun and free way to get a
new book!
Lots of children have enjoyed getting crafty during the play group sessions, as
well as painting with vegetables and making hedgehogs out of leaves, we've also
made mini pizzas! If you've been to Pott Row Methodist Church recently you will
have seen the giant poppy collage that the children made for Remembrance
Sunday, I think you'll agree that it's a really eye catching piece of art! This month
the children will be making Firework Glitter pictures and Marshmallow Sparklers
to celebrate Bonfire Night.
At the end of this month we are very lucky to have Paint Me Ceramics of
Hunstanton visiting us to make some beautiful personalised keepsakes with the
children that their families can purchase.
It's hard to believe that in a few weeks we will be getting ready to celebrate
Christmas. We have lots of exciting and festive things planned, but I'll keep those
secret for now! We also have our fundraiser this month, a Pamper Evening at
Grimston Village Hall on Saturday 12th November.
A quick reminder that we are open every Friday during term time, 9:30-11:30 at
Pott Row Methodist Church. We are a breast feeding friendly group and fully
equipped with baby changing facilities. Admission is 2 for one child and 50p
each for additional children. Each session starts with free play and crafts, followed
by snack time where the children have a choice of drink and a selection of
snacks, the adults are welcome to a hot drink with biscuits and cake, we then
have more free play, crafts and songs. Everyone is welcome to enjoy their time at
TiddlyPotts as they wish, all activities are optional.

I am writing in the vain hope that maybe someone on the council could possibly
help me locate a friend with whom I have lost touch---her first name is Lynn,
surname and tel. No. unfortunately lost in my address book when my handbag
stolen, I remember she lives in Grimston in a small old cottage, and at the time I
knew her she was manager of William Brown estate agents in Ely, which is very
near to my home; at that time my U.S. son in law was having difficulty obtaining
a visa to stay in UK with his UK wife and family, and Lynn was very instrumental
in proving to the immigration authorities that yes indeed he did have a house in
Ingoldisthorpe to house his family and had employment to support them thus
proving he would not be asking for benefit or aid of any kind---I cannot stress how
grateful I and my family are for this, and now that his work is inviting them to
move I would love to contact Lynn in the hope that she is working for an Estate
Agency and would sell their house for them; the Ely agency say that she has left
their company and was looking to work nearer her home, namely Grimston---i
have contacted Hunstanton and K.Lynn W. Brown agents but they have no
knowledge of her whereabouts-----I do apologise for this protracted email but
really wanted to explain my reasons for contacting her and if anyone knows of
Lynn, I would be most grateful if they could please contact me or pass my
message on to her with my email address and tel no. below

For a good few years I had the unenviable job of trying to help highly motivated
people come to terms with a major interruption to their career hopes and
aspirations. No one welcomes an unexpected interruption to life's dreams. But as
we all know they come from time to time, and it is hard to recover without
bitterness and anger making the situation worse. Recently I came across a book
that addressed the way to recover hope, entitled simply, Hope when you need it
most, by Jack Hayford. It addressed the need of those bereaved through sudden
and unexpected death of a loved one. The kind of event we hear about almost
daily as we listen to the news on radio or television.
In my case I had to help people with aspiration to serve overseas for a life time
cope with the decision that their services were no longer needed and to face a
future back in their homeland.
The kind of thing many refugees to Europe are having to face, having spent their
all for a better future overseas.
I found it helpful to send those I wish to help to a wise Counsellor. When they
returned they would often tell me the sum of her advice. It was a simple one liner.
In acceptance lies peace. If you stop to think of most disappointments that has
to be the first step to recover. Easier said than done! But to fight back can so
often reap yet more disappointment and disillusion. Even if there is an element of
injustice, it is wise to think carefully before engaging a barrister.
Of course there was more to my wise friend's counsel. A lot of ability to accept her
advice turned on the fundamental understanding of personal destiny. Does it all
depend on me or on someone else worthy of trust and commitment to my very
best interests? Happy the man or woman who has someone who will help you
through to acceptance and therefore a peace that can refocus and plan ahead for
the new future. How often that future turns out to better than imagined.
