INTERPRETATION FOR LOP EXPERIMENT

The aim of the experiment was to examine the levels of preocessing

framework for human memory proposed by Craik and Lockhart in 1972.
Levels of processing model proposes that how long a memory will be
remembered depends on the depth( i.e. the effort made to understand the
meaning) to which the information is processed. researchers have found in
numerous experiments that thinking about the meaning of something is a
deeper level of processing and results in longer retention of the stimulus. This
model of memory is called levels of processing model.
For this purpose, the data for two subjects was collected and pooled with the
rest of the group. The number of experimenters were 17 and each
experimenter conducted the experiment on 2 subjects.
Individual data for subject 1 and 2 falls in line with the LOP model given by
Craik and Lockhart considering the free recall phase of the experiment
which states that semantic processing > phonological processing > shallow
processing. The results for shallow processing for subject 1 was: 9 words; for
phonological processing was: 10 words and for semantic processings was: 14
words. The total no. of wordsrecalled were 33 out of 60 for subject 1. The
results for shallow processing for subject 2 was: 2 words; for phonological
processing was: 3 words; and for semantic processing was: 10 words. The
total no. of words recalled were 15 out of 60 for subject 2. This exactly
replicates the proposition given by the LOP model given by Craik and
Lockhart which is semantic processing > phonological processing > shallow
processing.
Individual data for subject 1 and 2 falls in line with the LOP model given by
Craik and Lockhart considering the recognition phase of the experiment
which again states that semantic processing > phonological processing >
shallow processing. The results for shallow processing for subject 1 was: 14
words; for phonological processing was 19 words and for semantic processing
was: 20 words. The subject recognised a total of 53 out of 60 words correctly
from the list that was presented to the subject. The results for shallow
processing for subject 2 was: 13 words; for phonological processing was: 15
words and for semantic processing was 20 words. The subject recognised a
total of 43 out of 60 words correctly from the list that was presented to the
subject. This again replicates the proposition given by the LOP model given
by Craik and Lockhart which is semantic processing > phonological
processing > shallow processing.
Also, the results above depict that the memory for recognition is better than
the memory for free recall which was again stated in the LOP model of
memory.
