ACTIVE VOLCANO

Mount Hibok-hibok / Catarman Volcano

is a stratovolcano on Camiguin Island in the Philippines. It is one of the active
volcanoes in the country and part of the Pacific ring of fire.
Volcanologists classify Hibok-Hibok as a stratovolcano and dome complex with an
elevation of 1,332 metres (4,370 ft) and a base diameter of 10 kilometres (6.2 mi).
Hibok-Hibok has erupted five times in modern history.
TRIVIA : Mt. Hibok-Hibok is a popular hiking destination in Camiguin island. It is the
youngest and the only historically active volcano on Camiguin Island.

Mount Ragang / Mount Piapayungan / Blue Mountain

is a stratovolcano on Mindanao island in the Philippines. Mount Ragang is located on
the boundary of the provinces of Lanao del Sur and Cotabato in the Autonomous
Region in Muslim Mindanao. Ragang has an elevation of 2,815 metres (9,236 ft) and
a base diameter of 32 km (20 mi).
It is the most active volcano on Mindanao, and is part of a string of volcanoes in
what volcanologists call the Central Mindanao Arc.
TRIVIA : It is the seventh highest mountain in the Philippines.

Mount Kalatungan / Catatungan

is a volcanic mountain located in the province of Bukidnon in the southern

Philippines with an elevation of 2,824 m (9,265 ft) asl. It is one of the several high
elevation peaks in the Kalatungan Mountain Range in Bukidnon on the island of
Mindanao. It is a stratovolcano with no known historical eruptions and classified by
the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) as a potentially
active volcano.
TRIVIA : It is the sixth highest mountain in the country
Mount Musuan / Musuan Peak
is an active volcano on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. It is 4.5 kilometres
south of the city of Valencia, province of Bukidnon, and 81 km southeast of Cagayan
de Oro City.
TRIVIA : Mount Musuan is also known as Mount Calayo and Mount Calayo literally
"Fire Mountain" . Musuan is a lava dome and tuff cone.
Mount Sumagaya
is a mountain on the northern part of the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. It is
under the jurisdictional territory of the municipality of Claveria. It stands at a height
of about 2, 248 meters (7, 375 feet) high.
It is part of the Central Mindanao Cordillera that stretches from Camiguin in the
north to Saranggani in the south.
TRIVIA : The mountain rose to prominence during the crash of Cebu Pacific Flight
387 on its slopes in 1998, one of the deadliest aviation incidents in the Philippines.
Mount Apo
is a large solfataric, potentially-active stratovolcano in the island of Mindanao,
Philippines. With an elevation of 2,954 metres (9,692 ft) above sea level, it is the
highest mountain in the Philippines and is located between Davao City and Davao
del Sur province in Region XI and Cotabato province in Region XII. The peak
overlooks Davao City 45 kilometres (28 mi) to the northeast, Digos City 25
kilometres (16 mi) to the southeast, and Kidapawan City 20 kilometres (12 mi) to
the west.
TRIVIA : On May 9, 1936, Mount Apo was first declared as a national park with
Proclamation no. 59 by President Manuel L. Quezon. Six indigenous groups, the
Manobos, Bagobo, Ubos, Atas, KIagans and Tagacaolo, live in the area of Mount
Apo.
They consider the mountain to be sacred ground and a place of worship.
A number of genealogies of Lumad leaders in South Central Mindanao trace their

roots to Mount Apo. For the Lumads, the term "Apo" was coined from the name of
their great grandparent Apo Sandawa
Makaturing
is a stratovolcano on Mindanao island in the Philippines. It is found in the province
of Lanao del Sur in the ARMM. Makaturing has an elevation of 1,940 meters and a
base diameter of 29 km. It is part of a string of volcanos called the Central
Mindanao Arc.
There is still some controversy on the number of times Makaturing erupted.
Makaturing is one of the active volcanos in the Philippines. All are part of the Pacific
Ring of Fire.
TRIVIA : On May 18, 1947, Philippine Air Force (PAF) commander Gen. Edwin
Andrews died with 16 others when the C-47 transport plane carrying them crashed
in Makaturing. Nine years later, the PAF established an air base in Zamboanga City
and is now named the Edwin Andrews Air Base from where the Philippine military
launches air support operations in the ongoing campaign against separatists.
Leonard Kniazeff
is a stratovolcano between the municipalitites of
Mabini and Maco in Compostela Valley Province,
Island of Mindanao, Philippines. It has a 203 km
diameter caldera lake called Lake Leonard. Amacan Thermal Area is located 5
cadastral km SSW of Lake Leonard.Leonard Kniazeff is one of the active volcanoes in
the Philippines, part of the Pacific ring of fire.
TRIVIA : The Leonard Kniazeff (North Davao) area has been the object of a
geothermal exploration program.Manat thermal area is north of Lake Leonard,
solfataras occur around its SW rim, and active solfataras, fumaroles, and hot springs
are found in the Amacan-Gopod thermal area south of the lake. There was a scare in
1995 but PHIVOLCS investigation at the time did not disclose any unusual activity,
and no unusual activity has been reported since. Its last eruption was dated as c.120
AD
Mount Matutum
is a stratovolcano that rises 2,286 meters asl
with a base diameter of 25 km. It has 2 hot
springs, called Acmonan and Linan, 5.7 km
west-southwest of the volcano. Adjacent
volcanic edifices are Landayao, Tampad, and Albulhek, which are all west of the
volcano, and Magolo to the north. There is a well-preserved 320 metre wide crater at
the volcano's summit. The crater is breached by three gorges and has a 120 metre
deep, densely forested floor.
TRIVIA : Volcanologists suspect that Matutum may have had a phreatic explosion on
March 7, 1911.
Next are the
Inactive Volcanoes
Mount Balatukan Range / Balingoan / Balatocan

is a massive compound stratovolcano that rises above northwest shore of Gingoog

Bay Misamis Oriental. It is the highest peak in the city of Gingoog and the
Municipalities of Claveria, Balingasag and Medina. The mountain is an old volcano,
said to have erupted in the 17th century. It rises steeply to a long ridge with several
peaks of almost 2,000 m and one of 2,442 m. The mountains retain extensive forest
cover, and old growth forest.
TRIVIA : The extent of primary lowland forest has been greatly reduced by logging
and kaingin activities, and in 1997 this forest type was reported to be almost absent
from the mountain. There are some areas of residual forest and cogon grassland.
Mount Malindang
is a complex volcano located in the province of Misamis Occidental in the southern
island of Mindanao. The least studied mountain range was formed through several
volcanic activities some of which could be historical, evident by the presence of two
calderas, surrounded by high rock walls, cinder cones, dome volcano plugs, two
sulfurous hot springs, and a crater lake named Lake Duminagat. The amphitheater
structures have extensive distribution of volcanic rocks, carbonized wood that are
found in pyroclastic deposits.
The entire mountain range is dissected by several canyons and ravines making its
terrain very rugged and the forested slopes covered with beautiful scenery.
TRIVIA : Mount Malindang and its adjoining mountain range is a catchment area
which drains water through 49 rivers and streams, and numerous creeks. It provides
potable water for domestic, agricultural and other uses to more than one million
inhabitants of Misamis Occidental and the eastern parts of Zamboanga del Norte
and Zamboanga del Sur.
Mount Hamiguitan
s mountain located n the province f Davao Oriental, Philippines. t has height
f 1620m. The mountain nd
ts vicinity has ne f the mst diverse wildlife
populations n the country. Among the wildlife found n the area re Philippine
eagles nd several species f Nepenthes. Sme f the latter, such s the Nepenthes
peltata, re endemic t the area. The mountain has protected forest area f
approximately 2,000 hectares. Ths woodland s noted fr ts unique pygmy forest f
century old trees n ultramafic soil, wth many endangered, endemic nd rare
species f flora nd fauna.
TRIVIA : The Mount Hamiguitan range, wth n area f 6834ha, ws declared
national park nd wildlife sanctuary n 2003. n 2014, the park ws inscribed s
UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Mount Parker
locally known as Melibengoy, is a stratovolcano on Mindanao island in
the Philippines (606.8' N, 12453.5' E). It is located in the province of South
Cotabato,30 kilometers west of General Santos City and 44 kilometers south of
Koronadal City.
TRIVIA : The volcano's English name is taken from an American General, General
Frank Parker, who spotted the mountain and claimed to have "discovered" it during
a flight he piloted in 1934. General Parker led an expedition up to the lake in the

mountain's crater with other US colonial and Filipino government officials, including
Vice-Governor-General Joseph Ralston Hayden and Provincial Governor Gutierrez, in
the fall of 1934.
3. Camiguin province holds the distinction of having the most number of volcanoes
per square kilometer than any other island on earth. It is also the only place in the
Philippines which has more volcanoes (7) than towns (5).
4. Davao City is the largest city in the Philippines with an area of 2,211 sq. km.,
about three times the size of Metro-Manila.
