1. a) How much force would be felt by a 12 cm wire carrying 0.

8 A
at right angles to the Earths surface magnetic field of 5 x 10-5 T?
b) How much force would be felt by a proton travelling across the
Earths magnetic field of 500 ms-1?
c) How fast would a proton need to travel in order for the
electromagnetic force on it to be sufficient to make it orbit the
Earth at the surface? (Radius of Earth = 6.4 x 106 m) Comment
on your answer.
2. Copy the diagram and draw an arrow to show the direction of any
force acting on the wire in each case.

3. The student sets up a jumping wire demonstration to impress his

younger brother. He uses a wire with a current of 2 A running
through it, and a pair of Magnadur magnets which have a
magnetic field of 0.5 mT. He is not too careful in setting up and 5
cm of the wire actually hangs across the field at an angle of 800.
How much force the wire experience? If it mass of 9 g, how fast
will it initially accelerate?
4. Dora takes a wire and coils it into ten circular turns with a radius
of 5 cm. She then passes it through a magnetic field with a
strength of 20 mT. What is the flux linkage?
5. The iron core in the diagram has a square cross-section with each
side 4 cm. Suppose the primary produces a magnetic field with a
strength of 0.5 T which takes 60 ms to generate, and to die away,
when the primary circuit is switch on or off. The secondary coil
has 120 turns. What emf would be induced in the secondary at
the moments of switch on and switch off of primary circuit?

6. The graph shown in figure is a trace of induced emf against time

as a magnet is dropped through a coil of wire.

a) Describe and explain the trace obtained.

b) If the coil were connected in series to a light bulb, describe
and explain how the current through the bulb would vary over
time.
7. a) The magnitude of the force on a current carrying conductor in
a magnetic field is directly proportional to the magnitude of the
current in the conductor. With the aid of diagram describe how
you would demonstrate this in a school laboratory.
b) At a certain point on the Earths surface the horizontal
component of the Earths magnetic field is 1.8 x 10-5 T. A straight
piece of conducting wire 2.0 m long, of mass 1.5 lies on a
horizontal wooden bench in east-west direction. When a very
large current flows momentarily in the wire it is just sufficient to
cause the wire to lift up off the surface of the bench.
i) State the direction of the current in the wire.
ii) Calculate the current.
iii) What other noticeable effect will this current produce?
8. The diagram shows a rectangular coil PQRS which can rotate
about an axis which is perpendicular to the magnetic field
between two magnetic poles.

a) Explain why the coil begins to rotate when the direct current I is
switched on.
b) Add to copy of the diagram an arrow showing the direction of the
force on PQ.
c) State three factors which would affect the magnitude of this
force.
d) A student notices that as the coil rotates faster the current in it
reduces. Explain this observation.
