TEI Landmark Audios 25th Year Childrens Literacy and Programming Grant Application
Tell us about your library and the community you serve. How will you use the funds? What is the expected impact?
Folkston Elementary School is a public school situated in a small rural community in the southeast corner of Georgia. The student population at FES is comprised of students in pre-k through third grade.
FES is a Title I school and currently 87.55% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. The library at FES serves 1,148 patrons, including faculty, students and parents. We strive to provide access to quality print and technology resources

for our patrons. In an effort to increase parent involvement, as well as access to print resources in the home, we would like to utilize grant funds to implement a monthly family reading program.
The program that we have designed aims to increase family literacy skills by partnering with families of struggling readers to model appropriate reading strategies that can be used in the home. One night a month,
the participating families will meet in the library at FES to share a brief snack time and guided storytime. During guided storytime, the librarian will partner with various teachers at FES to model appropriate reading strategies that can
be used in the home such as questioning, summarizing, retelling, etc. This will be an interactive activity in which the librarian and teacher model strategies and then families will have an opportunity to practice. After storytime is over,

families will return home with their book to continue implementing these strategies at home. In order to utilize funds to the best of our ability, we will apply the total ($1,000) towards buying books for the participating
families to keep at home. The library will partner with the parent involvement committee to procure faculty members willing to staff these events. In addition, donations for snacks will be accepted from local churches and other

community organizations. Please see the summary below for more details outlining the family reading program.

SUMMARY - Identification of Participants

The family reading program will begin in January and last through the month of May. Twenty families will be invited to participate in this program. These families will be identified through our Dibels and Journeys benchmark testing
data. Students with the lowest reading scores will be identified as candidates for the program. During grade level data review meetings, administrators will meet with teachers to further discuss students who should qualify for the program.

Classroom data will be considered during these meetings as well. A total of five students from each grade level, kindergarten through third grade, will be identified to participate in the program with their families.

SUMMARY - Outline of Events

The family reading program, as stated above, will begin in January and last through the month of May. Each event will last approximately 1.5 hours. Thirty minutes will be allotted for snacks and "ice-breaker" activities,
and one hour will be devoted to storytime and literacy skill review. During this time, the librarian and faculty volunteers will read a story and model appropriate reading strategies. Then, families will be given an opportunity to practice the skill.

SUMMARY - Budget
$1,000 for books: 20 families, 1 book per household per event X 5 events = 100 copies of books
