Detailed Lesson Plan

This lesson is going to be a debate that the students have over the execution
of King Louis XVI. Its point is to get students to be able to formulate
arguments based on what they have learned and researched on their own.

Do Now: Have the students come in and have them set up the desks with
three different sides set up. After they set up the desks have them select an
order in which they are going to present their point that they created last
night. Each students should have a different point so this is where they can
work out that no one has the same point. Give the students about ten
minutes to work all this out
Debate Format
Each students has to speak at least twice in order to gain credit for the
debate. In class yesterday the students were broken up into three different
groups. The first group is arguing to execute the King while the second group
opposes the execution of the King. The third group will ask questions after
each person presents their point. So if Group 1 presented a point Group 3
would ask a question that has the person elaborate on their point. After that
Group 2 would pick a person that would offer a counter to the point and the
two students are allowed to debate between them. So the class is a size of
24 so Group 1 and Group 2 have eight students and Group 2 has six people.
The debate will take place over two days as it is not possible to fit in the
debate in one forty five minute period. The first day is the day when the
students present their arguments to the class. With the response to the
points brought up happening the next class day. This is why it is important to
tell students to take notes as they will have to speak on the points a
classmate made next class.
The time will be broken down as such:
Group 1 the pro group will go first. Each student has one minute to get their
point across to the class. After the minute has passed Group 3 will have a
minute thirty to make a question and ask it. The student will have thirty
seconds to respond and this will go on until everyone in the class has
presented. After all the students in Group 1 have gone it will shift over to
Group 2 and the same time process goes on.
Wrap Up: Remind students that they should look over the notes they have
taken as they will have to speak at least once in the next class. They should
think about what they learned and what they might have looked at overnight
in order to prove to the third group that their side is right.
