So long, Farewell

SCENE 1
*on white lights*
Narrator: Tina and her mother planned to go to a camping
trip, just the 2 of them. But Tina, gets bored easily and side
tracked at the same time.
Mother: Tina! Dont you wander around without me! You
might get lost in the woods!
Tina: But, mommy! I wanna go home! Im super bored and
theres so many mosquitos! Its like so icky!
Mother: You know you should appreciate nature for once.
Tina: But why should I mommy?
Mother: Sometimes you have to look at your surroundings
*play The Sound of Music 1:11 * to see the real beauty that
was made by Mother Nature and also
The hills are alive with the Sound of Music, with songs they
have sung for a thousand years. The hills fill my heart with
the Sound of Music, my heart wants to sing every song it
hears.
And your heart should , too!
Tina: Okay, buthow mommy?
Mother: To make you understand it more clearly, Ill just tell
you a story
* on yellow lights *
* Maria enters to stage right, wandering around while
carrying a book *
Narrator: Maria is a free-spirited young Austrian woman
studying to become a nun at Nonnberg Abbey in Salzburg in
1938. Her love of music and the mountains, her youthful
enthusiasm and imagination. And also, her lack of discipline
cause some concern among the nuns.
SCENE 2
* on lights *
* play Morning Hymn *

* Nun enters from stage left, Maria stays on stage while


singing/playing ukulele *
Mother: (sigh) I must speak with Maria.
Maria: (runs towards Mother, talk fast) Mother, Im sorry. I
couldnt help myself. The hills were calling and before I knew
it I was singing.
Mother: You know we have rules about postulants singing.
Maria: I know, but I cant seem to stop myself. I want to sing
all the time.
Mother: Maria, (sigh) it seems that youll be leaving us for a
while.
Maria: No, Mother! Please dont send me away! This is where
I belong!
Mother: (gives Maria sympathetic look) There is a family near
Salzburg that needs a governess until September for 7
children.
Maria: (face the audience) 7 CHILDREN?
Nun: Do you like children, Maria?
Maria: Why yes, but 7?
Nun: Ill tell Captain von Trapp to expect you tomorrow. Im
sure you will make us proud.
Maria: I promise to
Narrator: Captain von Trapp is a retired officer of the
Imperior Navy. His wife died and now, he is alone with the 7
children.
SCENE 3
* lights *
Narrator: Maria arrives at the villa of the Captain von Trapp.
Captain: Good afternoon, Fraulein Maria.
Maria: Good afternoon, Captain.
Narrator: He explains her duties and calls the children. They
march in, clad in their uniforms (children marches in).

Captain: I dont know what the Abby told you, but I trust you.
(whistles) Children, this is your new governess, Fraulein
Maria.
(children looks at her disapprovingly)
Children: (introduces themselves)
Narrator: Captain teaches Maria their individual signals on
the call, but she openly disapproves of the militaristic
approach while the Captain is away in Vienna. Then, Maria
takes them around.
* characters exit to stage left *
* on blue lights *
* change props (tent) *
Tina: Mommy! I finally get it! You should open your heart to
everyone! Even to nature by singing with your heart. Am I
right mommy?
Mother: Yes! (hugs Tina) But, we should head back to our
tent. Its getting quite dark.
SCENE 4
* on white lights *
Mother: Tina, time to go to sleep!
Tina: But, mommy! I cant sleep!
Mother: Okay, then. Ill tell you what happened next.
Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens,
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens,
Brown paper packages tied up with strings,
These are a few of my favorite things
* flicker lights , rain & thunderstorm sound effects *
* children enters stage *

Maria: (sings)
Cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels,
Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles,
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings,
These are a few of my favorite things.
Girls in white dresses and blue satin sashes,
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes,
Silver white winters that melt into springs,
These are a few of my favorite things.
When the dog bites, when the bee stings, when Im feeling
sad,
I simple remember my favorite things.
And then I dont feel so bad
SCENE 5
Tina: Mommy, mommy! Wake up! There are bunnies nearby
our tent! Can I pet them?
Mother: (rises up) Sorry, sweetie. You cant. They might have
rabies. But we can look at them at a distance. Oh, look!
There are 3 bunnies! (bunny #1 will fight bunny #3)
Tina: Mommy, why are they fighting?
Mother: Maybe because the other bunny is jealous, thats
why its being mean to the other bunny. Just like what
happened in the story.
Tina: What happened, mommy?
* off lights, change to yellow lights *
Narrator: The Captain gives a party to introduce Elsa and
guests argue over the Anschluss. He and Maria dance until
they come face-to-face; and she breaks away, embarrassed
and confused. Discussing the expected marriage between
Elsa and the Captain, Brigitta tells Leisl that she thinks Maria
and the Captain are really in love with each other. Elsa asks
the Captain to allow the children to say goodnight to the
guests.

Children: So long farewell, auf wiedersehen, good night.


Marta: I hate to go and leave this pretty sight.
So long farewell, auf wiedersehen, adieu.
Friedrich: Adieu, adieu, to yieu and yieu and yieu.
Leisl: Id like to say and taste my first champagne. Yes?
Captain: No.
Kurt: So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye.
I leave and heave a sigh and say goodbye.
Brigitta: Im glad to go, I cannot tell a lie.
Louisa: I flit, I float, I fleetly flee, I fly.
Gretl: The sun has gone to bed and so must I.
Children: So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye.
Adults: Goodbye.
Narrator: The guests leave for the dining room and Maria
slips out the front door with her luggage.
* on yellow lights *
* Nun and Maria enters from stage right, while Captain
enters from stage left *
Narrator: At the abbey, Maria says that she is ready to take
her monastic vows; but the Mother Abbess realizes that she
is running away from her feelings. She tells her to face the
Captain and discover if they love each other, and tells her to
search for and find the life she is meant to live.
* on lights *
Tina: The end?
Mother: Yes dear, the end.
* LIGHTS OFF *
