Victorian truck and quad dog
mass increase
T he Victorian quarrying industry
is set to make productivity gains
following a VicRoads decision to allow
truck and dog trailer combinations to
operate at increased mass limits.
Truck and dog trailer combinations
that meet the Performance Based
Standards (PBS) Level Two will be
granted access on a permit basis
enabling them to carry increased mass
(57.5 tonnes, up from 50 tonnes) on
the B-double and Higher Mass Limits
(HML) network.
Don Hogben, Director of Vehicle
Management and Safety for VicRoads
said, Over the past 12 months, a
number of 7-axle truck and dog trailer
combinations have been assessed
against the national Performance
Based Standards. The results have
shown that well designed truck and
dog trailers at up to 57.5 tonnes
and 20 metres long are dynamically
stable and can pass all the PBS
Level Two standards. This is great
news for operators of truck and
trailer combinations, especially
those involved in quarrying and
construction.
In Victoria alone there are in excess of
2000 truck and trailer combinations
transporting a range of quarry
products, such as cement, sand, rock,
pre-mixed concrete and asphalt.
The increase to 57.5 tonnes is a
15% productivity increase for the
quarry industry. Over time this will
mean a reduction in the number of
trucks and trailers on Victorias roads
for the same freight task, which
will not only reduce congestion but
will also see a decrease in carbon
emissions. Furthermore these vehicles
will be safer as theyve passed a PBS
assessment, said Philip Lovel from the
Victorian Transport Association.
VicRoads is currently working closely
with Cement Concrete and Aggregates
Australia (CCAA) to facilitate the
industrys move to compliant PBS
truck and dog combinations and to
ensure that this productivity benefit is
communicated to all its members.

Transport Committee expained, It is
very encouraging to have VicRoads
working with our industry to deliver
real gains in productivity and
greenhouse gas reduction. All road
users will benefit from initiatives
such as these and we look forward to
continuing to work with VicRoads and
local authorities to improve the way
construction materials are transported
for the benefit of our industry and the
community.

Call to report spiked wheel nuts

T he Australian Trucking Association
has called on its member
organisations to encourage operators
to ensure that spiked wheel nuts are
not fitted on trucks in Australia.
The New South Wales RTA said it
welcomes this initiative. Spiked wheel
nuts have recently become popular
amongst some parts of industry,
including certain long distance
highway operators. These wheel nuts
are illegal and dangerous fitments
which increase the likelihood of injury
to truck drivers and other road users.
The RTA invites any driver or operator
who sights a vehicle fitted with spiked
wheel nuts to report that vehicle to
the RTAs Heavy Vehicle Telephone Line
at the RTA Call Centre 1300 364 847.
Vehicles reported to the RTA will
be placed on alerts in the RTAs
computerised intercept system so that
they will be stopped for inspection at
the first available opportunity.
The RTA says it acknowledges
and thanks members of industry,
including major freight customers,
who expressed concern regarding
these vehicles in recent days. The RTA
welcomes these companies decision
to report these vehicles as a means of
fulfilling their Chain of Responsibility
obligations.

Often referred to as the steering

box, integral hydraulic power
steering means that the steering
gear contains a manual steering
mechanism, a hydraulic control
valve, and a hydraulic power
cylinder; all in a single, compact
package.

How it works
The steering gear controls the
power generated by the power
steering pump.
To achieve steering assistance,
the hydraulic control valve directs
oil flow from the engine driven
pump to either end of the steering
gears cylinder cavities for left or
right turns.
The flow directed to the cavities is
dependent on the speed at which
the driver turns the wheel.
The pressure required for the gear
to steer the vehicle is created by the
resistance of the steer wheels. The
hydraulic control valve functions
by sensing these requirements and
supplies fluid to the cylinder cavity
at the proper flow rate and pressure
Diagnosis
The power steering system
is a complex arrangement of
components including ball joints,
levers, links, wheels/tyres and
hydraulics and along with the
steering gear can cause many
common complaints from drivers
such as premature tyre wear,
wandering, darting and hard or
unpredictable steering.
As steering problems are an
important safely issue and can
be difficult to diagnose, it is
recommended you consult a
