Arizonas Jakob Butturff Wins PBA Xtra Frame

South Point Las Vegas Open
Tommy Jones wins $10,000 bonus as season-long Xtra Frame Tour points leader
By Bill Vint - PBA
LAS VEGAS Jakob Butturff of Chandler, Ariz.,
won his second career Professional Bowlers
Association Tour title in the PBA Xtra Frame South
Point Las Vegas Open at South Point Bowling Plaza
in a championship round that featured three of the
PBAs rising stars.
Butturff, who won his only other title earlier in the
year in the PBA Xtra Frame Lubbock Sports Open in
Texas, struck on 10 of his first 11 shots to defeat 19year-old Anthony Simonson of Princeton, Texas,
277-211.
Butturff, a 22-year-old left-hander, led the field
after 32 games of qualifying and match play by 448
pins, winning 14 of his 16 matches without an open
frame. Except for his 218 game to start the tournament, the second-year PBA member led all the way to
the final match.
Everyone performed great, Butturff said. I just
had to make as many good shots as they did.
My mom was diagnosed with cancer recently, so I
really wanted to win this one for her. One thing Ive
learned is that when someone has cancer, you have to
keep their spirits up and I know she likes it when I
bowl well. My title was basically for her.
Ive just been successful bowling here in Vegas; it
was more of a comfort feeling than anything, he
added.
Simonsen, who won both of his PBA Tour titles earlier in the year, won the semifinal match in a strikefest against 21-year-old Swedish two-hander Jesper

Svensson, 267-258. The battle of contenders for 2016

PBA Player of the Year honors began with Simonsen
throwing seven strikes to start the match while
Svensson, the Tours only three-time winner in 2016,
converted three single-pin spares before rolling eight
strikes in a row to finish his game.
In the first match, Simonsen struck on four of his
first five shots before leaving the 4-6-7-10 split, but
ONeill had trouble gaining ground, leaving 10 pins
on five of his first seven shots. He finally got on track
with a late string of four strikes, but Simonsen recovered from his big split with a string of six strikes for
a 242-224 victory.
Simonsen also struck on four of his first five shots
against Jones in the second match, but Jones,
after converting spares in his first three
frames, threw three strikes to catch up. A 4-610 split in Jones seventh frame, however,
gave Simonsen an opening and he jumped on
it, throwing another string of five strikes to
knock Jones out of the finals, 248-191.
With his fourth-place finish, Jones earned
17 points in the final PBA Xtra Frame Tour
event of the year and captured the $10,000
winner-take-all bonus with a season-ending
total of 87 points to overtake E.J. Tackett,
PBA photo who finished with 84 points, and Ryan
Champion Jakob Butturff with contenders Jesper Svensson, Ciminelli, who had 83.
Tommy Jones, Bill ONeill, and Anthony Simonsen.

Merino 265, and Bryan Paul 674.

Indianas Ronnie Russell First Pick

In 2017 PBA League Draft
Fifth season of PBA team competition returns to
new Bayside Bowl in Maine in April
By Bill Vint - PBA
LAS VEGAS The Professional Bowlers Association League took its
final steps in preparation for the 2017 season when the leagues eight
team managers got together at the South Point Bowling Plaza to draft the
final two players to complete their five-player rosters.
Selecting first in the serpentine draft, Philadelphia Hitmen manager
Tim Mack selected Ronnie Russell of Marion, Ind. L.A. X manager
Andrew Cain then selected Finlands Osku Palermaa. And so the draft
went until the 20th and final player selected as the draft came back to the
Hitmen was Dave Wodka, a member of the 2016 Philadelphia roster.
That was very difficult, Couch said of making the final pick. There
were a lot of highly capable players left on the board, but it came down
to my team wanting a guy they were very comfortable bowling with, and
that was it.
The defending champion Dallas Strikers, making the eighth and ninth
selections, picked Rhino Page and BJ Moore, respectively. Moore was a
member of the 2016 Strikers team, but fifth member Shawn Maldonado
was taken earlier in the first round by the Silver Lake Atom Splitters.
I was hoping I could keep last years team together, Strikers playermanager Norm Duke said, but Maldonado was gone before I could pick
him.
One of the biggest problems with the PBA League and the draft is
that we have so many great players and only a limited number of roster
spots available, PBA CEO and Commissioner Tom Clark said.

Wade Chamberlain Topped Youth Travelers

Continued from Page 1

By Vince Albrecht
West Haverstraw, NY The Stan Niemiec Youth Travel League venue
was Hi-Tor Lanes where the 15-year-old Chamberlain twins Wade and
Tom went amok blasting the maples with 264-223-220: 707 and 222243-195: 660 respectively in leading Holiday II to a 3008-2714 [27-5]
triumph over short-handed T-Bowl. The winners also benefited from
Esteban Garcias 201 while T-Bowls centerpiece was 14-year-old Tom
Luchetta who finished his opener by stringing together ten strikes for
268, the sessions best game.
Hi-Tor Is home field advantage paid off big time as the league leaders overwhelmed Montvale, 28-4 behind the triple deuce prowess of
Johnny Toscano 228-244-219: 691 and Nick Varano 227-236-206: 669.
Pacing Montvales offense was Nick Fabiano 228: 610 and Joseph
Mahoney a 216 opening post.
Lodi emerged from the cellars darkness with a blue-chip exploit as the
squad jarred the pin deck with 3176, the leagues best gross set to date,
in swamping Holiday I, despite three 600s fashioned by the latter. In
his first appearance of the season for Lodi, 15-year-old Nick Greco fired
an impressive triple deuce 259-214-212: 685 while superb numbers
were posted as well by 14-year-old Jake Nappi 201-246-199: 646 and
Hawthorne sophomore Hunter Perry 202-223: 612. Holiday Is high
rollers were Pompton Lakes junior David Neil 220-202-226: 648, Frank
Magyar 213-198-212: 623, Alex McGuire 245: 601 and Ramsey junior
Angela Dinallo a 213 single.
Kyle Schellberg blasted 256-218: 668 and had ample support from his
distaff teammates: Gabriella Pangaro 220, Janina Santoro 221-200 and
Kristen Kane 217 as Bowler City I took out Bowler City II, 2818-2660
[26-6]. The latters top scores came from Dickinson junior Matt
Burzynski and Hackensack sophomore Arielle Wallace, both finishing
with a opening game 200.

All eight teams were given the opportunity to protect three players from their 2016 rosters prior to the draft.
Among the 40 players selected for 2017 were two women, Professional Womens Bowling Association
champions Liz Johnson (Portland Lumberjacks) and Danielle McEwan (NYC WTT KingPins).
The PBA League will return to the newly-reconstructed Bayside Bowl in Portland, Maine, in April for its
fifth season of competition. All matches in pursuit of the Elias Cup will be televised on ESPN.
The 2017 rosters, including the respective team managers and pending any trades that might be made, will
be:
Dallas Strikers (player-manager Norm Duke): Norm Duke, Tommy Jones, Bill ONeill, Rhino Page, B.J.
Moore.
NYC WTT KingPins (manager Carolyn Dorin-Ballard): Pete Weber, Marshall Kent, John Szczerbinski,
Danielle McEwan, Sam Cooley.
Motown Muscle (manager Del Ballard Jr.): E.J. Tackett, Anthony Simonsen, Josh Blanchard, Francois
Lavoie, Dick Allen.
Portland Lumberjacks (manager Tim Mack): Wes Malott, Ryan Ciminelli, Liz Johnson, Kyle Troup,
Bryon Smith.
Silver Lake Atom Splitters (manager Mark Baker): Chris Barnes, Tom Daugherty, Jesper Svensson,
Shawn Maldonado, D.J. Archer.
Brooklyn Styles (manager Johnny Petraglia): Sean Rash, Parker Bohn III, Walter Ray Williams Jr., Jason
Sterner, Jon Van Hees.
L.A. X (manager Andrew Cain): Jason Belmonte, Stuart Williams, Martin Larsen, Osku Palermaa, Jakob
Butturff.
Philadelphia Hitmen (manager Jason Couch): Dom Barrett; Tom Smallwood; Chris Loschetter, Ronnie
Russell, Dave Wodka.
The PBA League draft was covered live by PBAs Xtra Frame online video-streaming service and was hosted by South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas.
PBA League competition will begin with a new seven-game round-robin team competition on April 13 to
determine the seeding for the ESPN television finals, which will be contested April 15-16. ESPN will air the
two quarterfinal rounds of PBA League competition on April 23 and 30, the semifinals on May 7, and the Elias
Cup finals on May 14.
Additional information about the PBA League can be found on pba.com and throughout the entire family of
