Task 1: Analysing Film Scenes

1. Flight (2012)

Crash

Scene:

Plot Summary: The film Flight (2012) is a Drama-Thriller movie about

an airline pilot who saves almost all his passengers on his
malfunctioning airliner, which eventually crashes. An investigation
goes underway about the accident and reveals something troubling.
Where in the movie do you expect to see this scene?
Since the film is primarily about an investigation into the plane crash,
this simply means that this scene would be at the start of the movie as
it sets the tone for the entire film. This scene is where the plane
experiences some issues as the engines shut down and the plane
begins to free-fall through the air. The pilot, Whit Whitaker takes
everyones lives into his own hands and does the unexpected, that no
one has ever done before. He succeeds on landing the plane in harsh
conditions and manages to save the majority of the lives on-board the

plane.

Who is the target audience for this film?
from helping another strap into
Since the movies genre is drama and thriller (hybrid-genre) and has an
age rating of 18, this movie will not appeal to a younger audience, this
is for an older mature audience into drama-thriller movies, around the
age of 18-50. Its for people that enjoy movies that dont foreshadow
whats going to happen but instead creates suspense and keeps you on
the edge of your seat as you dont know what is going to happen which
would be the drama genre. Captain Whit Whitaker is a pilot that
performs a miracle then an investigation goes underway to determine
if he was the one that caused the plane crash. This would be the
thriller genre. The genres; drama and thriller have such a wide
audience meaning this film will appeal to all of the socio-economic
groups, A to E. The demographic target audience would be split down

Media Level 2 Task 1-2

the middle, as this movie does not just appeal to one gender because
its based on a Pilot that saves many lives.
Whats the emotional effect on the audience?
At the start of the movie once Captain Whit Whitaker has miraculously
saved the plane from a potential catastrophic crash, the audience
becomes happy and proud of him of as he saved many lives, but as the
plane was falling from the sky the audience was scared and gripping to
the edge of their seats as they didnt know what was going to happen.
There is one unfortunate death, Whits lover who is a flight attendant
on the plane, she helps someone get into their seat which means she
wasnt strapped in as the plane went down and roughly landed. She
died, as the audience sees this they feel very sad because the
audience have a slight connection with here as shes the captains
lover and the audience already have a connection with him.
Does this scene effectively appeal to its target audience?
The target audience for this film are people aged 18-50 that are into
the thriller and drama films, which means they will really enjoy this
movie, as this scene will provide content from both these genres. As
the movie starts off, as this scene is located at the start of the movie.
The scene starts off as a calm airplane ride but as the plane
malfunctions and starts to free fall the audience start fearing for
everyone on board and hopes for the best and as Captain Whit
Whitaker does the impossible and lands the plane the audience feel
relieved. This is exactly what thriller/drama is, so it does appeal to the
target audience.

2. The Dictator (2012) Helicopter Scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?

v=JnszgkE3O8g
Plot Summary: The Dictator is a Comedy-Romance movie about The
Republic of Wadiya, ruled by an eccentric and oppressive leader named
Hafez Aladeen. Aladeen is summoned to New York to a UN assembly to
address concerns about his country's nuclear weapons program, but
the trip goes awry.
Where in the movie do you expect to see this scene?
In this scene, the General is already in America and has re-united with
the head of his nuclear weapons program who he had executed for
not making his nuke pointy but round. This means that this scene is
pretty far into the movie.
Who is the target audience for this film?
This movie is a comedy-romance movie meaning that this movie has a
hybrid genre.
This movie is not the typical Rom-Com but more focused on the
comedy side. The age rating for this movie is 18+ meaning that people
who will watch this will have to be mature enough to get the jokes and
they must also like the comedy and romance genre. This movie is
focused more on the comedic side than the romantic side, so if the
audience doesnt like romance the movie will still be funny but if
someone is here just for the romance side, they are going to be
disappointed. The General falls in love around the end of the movie, so
leading up to this point its pure laughter. This movie is suitable for
people aged 14-30 as older people may not find the jokes amusing and
the younger people will defiantly not understand them. The reason the
age range is set from 14 and the age rating of the movie is 18 is
simple, people aged 14-17 love dark comedy and will understand most
of the jokes since the same jokes are floating around the internet in
multiplayer games. This movie will appeal to socio-economic groups
C2-E because the humour is not standard funny jokes, well the jokes
are funny but more serious and some people might get offended by
them. A film like this doesnt have a mass audience but more of a
niche audience that enjoys the darker side to comedy. This also ties in
with religion, this is a movie about a Dictator that gets called to the UN
because of his nuclear program some religious people might get
offended by this. There is also another reason why the socio-economic

groups are from C2-E, this is because the more mature, more educated
people such as doctors and lawyers will most likely find this jokes to be
stupid and not funny.

thats going to happen in 2012, or that he is going to detonate his vest
bomb. They are just having a general conversation about the new
Porsche 911 2012 edition and that they should go and check out some
tourist attractions like the Empire state building and the General still
has back pains so he made himself a back brace. This particular scene
will make the audience go hysterical because its just a simple
misinterpretation, buts its so funny because the audience understands

what they are saying due to the subtitles.

The General is talking about crashing his Porsche 911, whilst doing
the driving action but the Americans only hear 911 and see him
Does this scene effectively appeal to its target audience?
The genre of this movie is comedy and romance but this scene has
only the comedy aspect, so if someone from the audience is here to
see the comedy side they wont be disappointed because this scene
hilarious and will make anyone mature enough that will understand
whats going on, laugh. If the audience came to this movie just for the
romantic aspect they will be very disappointed, as the romantic stuff

happens near the end of the movie. These people will be classified as
the secondary audience.

3. The Conjuring (2013) Dresser Scene:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOgC_YUyTYs
Plot Summary: The Conjuring is a Horror-Mystery-Thriller movie set in
1971, Carolyn and Roger Perron moves his family into a dilapidated
Rhode Island farm house and soon strange things start happening
around it with escalating nightmarish terror. In desperation, Carolyn
contacts the noted paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren,
to examine the house. What the Warrens discover is a whole area
steeped in a satanic haunting that is now targeting the Perron family
wherever they go. To stop this evil, the Warrens will have to call upon
all their skills and spiritual strength to defeat this spectral menace at
its source that threatens to destroy everyone involved.
Where in the movie do you expect to see this scene?
Since this is a horror movie and in the majority of horror movies they
scary things tend to happen at the start until the figure out what to do,
so since this is a very scary scene where the mum is putting her
slightly possessed daughter to bed, she goes to the wardrobe and
opens it theres nothing there so she turns around, then the daughter
points whilst looking terrified and something is on top of the wardrobe
and jumps down scaring the *&!% out of you. So, this scene is around
the first 30-45 minutes of the film.
A very scary scene as an
evil creature of some sort
that jumps down from the
top of the wardrobe
scaring everyone watching
without no doubt!

Media Level 2 Task 1-2

Tommy Bowers

Who is the target audience for this film?

The genres of this movie are horror, mystery and thriller meaning this
movie is a hybrid genre between three of the most popular genres. The
age rating is 18+ meaning the people who will want to see this movie
like these genres, especially horror since this movie is very horror
orientated due to the many jump scares and terrifying moments. The
movie is also very interesting because it includes a mystery and thriller
aspect alongside the horror, so the story is not just about something
scary but actually has a story to why this evil thing is targeting their
family. People from 18-50 will be the ones most likely to watch this
movie since its not something a kid would watch, being a scary horror
and all and as its a movie you cant really put an age target on it,
since there are many people of many ages that enjoy horror movies.
Even though the age rating is 18+ many people a little bit younger
than 18 enjoy horror movies so they are inclined to watch it. The horror
genre is one of the most popular and has a mass audience. This movie
will appeal to all the socio-economic groups A to E because its a
horror, not much understanding is needed, it just scares you. This
movie also appeals to both genders.
Whats the emotional effect on the audience?
This movie is seriously scary and in this scene, especially, there is a
massive jump scare that will leave the audience frightened to be in the
dark. This scene has one of the main jump scares but throughout the
movie there are a ton more, some even scarier. The only thing the
audience is going to be feeling is fear. As its a mystery and thriller not
just a horror, once the family has discovered why this evil thing is
doing this to them the audience will feel a sense of relief.
Does this scene effectively appeal to its target audience?
This scene without no doubt will effectively appeal to the target
audience. This is one of the biggest jump scares in the movie and will
most likely scare the viewer. This scene only has aspects from the
horror genre, no mystery or thriller, but this dont matter as its a type
of movie that doesnt need to use all genres all the time in every
scene, there has to be some scary scenes like this.

Task 2: Planning a film scene

Firstly, I came up with three separate ideas of film scenes I am going to
make. I made three separate spider-diagrams which include many
ideas about what the film is about. Its not just ideas about a scene its
ideas about the whole film, even though we are making a film scene

Media Level 2 Task 1-2

Tommy Bowers

we need a reason why we chose to make that scene so my ideas are

about the whole film.

My first idea is a Horror-Mystery-Thriller about an innocent family that gets targeted by an

evil spirit that inhabits the Daughters doll. The part of the film that would become the film
scene I create is when the Mother is home alone whilst the kids are at school and the
husband is at work, she is cleaning her daughters room and things start to move, then the
doll moves around and as she realizes and tries to leave but the door closes on her and
she starts screaming. The Doll moves its head and starts singing a nursery rhyme. The
husband comes through the door and it suddenly all stops. She is still screaming with her
eyes closed, the husband rushes up to see whats wrong and she opens her eyes and
everything is back to normal and everything that moved is now back in place. Thats

Media Level 2 Task 1-2

Tommy Bowers

My second idea is an Action-Adventure-Comedy film about a man who is in the army and
he goes for what he thought was a blood test but instead the army was testing out a new
drug that genetically modifies the person in ways they dont even know about, they
thought the drug would only enhance his strength but instead it changed him. The
experiment went wrong he started to change The General who is also head of the illegal
experimentation goes after him as he escapes. Everyone he loves was killed by the
General as he tries to cover up what he did. The man known as Raymond Smith revenges
his loved ones and exposes the program and the General. The scene that I would be
making out of this movie would be at the end when its him against the general and his
army, as huge fight scene as you finally see the full extent of his new powers as he takes

Media Level 2 Task 1-2

Tommy Bowers

My third and final idea is what Im going to be making my film scene about. This idea is a
Thriller-Action-Adventure about a CIA agent that finds out the location of a Nuclear
weapon that the Russians are after to use on the US. The reason of not telling the Director
of the CIA and keeping the location to himself is because secretly the Director of the CIA is
working for the Russians and the agent whose name is classified is the only one who
knows as he was getting suspicious as the Director slipped up a couple times and the
agent was the only one who noticed, the agent then followed the Director one night and it
led him straight to the Russians. There is a back story of how he became an agent, he
started off in the Marines and was one of the best, he received the medal of honour and is
a decorated soldier, he was then recruited by the Director himself to work as an
intelligence officer in the CIA. Eventually the Director finds out that the agent knows the
location and they have one big confrontation and he tells the director he knows hes
working for the Russians. This is the point where my film scene will be filmed. Later that
night the agent is walking down an alley and two Russians kidnap him and interrogate him

I came up with two names for my film; Face-off and Takedown. I

decided to go with Takedown.

Similar stock elements to my final idea Genre

My final idea has the genres Thriller-Action-Adventure this means
that all the other movies with these genres have stock elements
throughout the movie that if you watched a film and didnt know the
genre you could say what genre the movie is.
The four movies; Taken, The Matrix, Inception and Casino Royale all
include many fight scenes in many different locations from an Airport
to a Train, this is the action genre. They also include tense suspenseful
moments which immediately you could identify as the Thriller genre. In
these four movies, the characters are always traveling to different
locations, this is the Adventure genre. In these four movies, there is a
male as the lead character; Taken its Bryan Mills, The Matrix its Neo,
Inception its Cobb and in Casino Royale its James bond. This is
because these genres are more focused towards the male audience
since men prefer action movies and women prefer romance movies.
The proof of this is that the lead character of these four movies is a
male. The style of these movies has a darker tone, shot day and night
and the men usually where quits or very smart casual clothes, the only
exception of this is in the Matrix because this movie is set in the future.
The audio for these four movies include various gun shots, fight sounds
(punches, kicks, slaps, blocks). There is also action music when a
fight/chase scene is happening, there is also suspenseful music in
some scenes.

Target Audience research for my film scene

The reason I chose to base my film scene around Thriller-Action and
Adventure is because these are very popular genres and have a wide
audience. Since they are all together in my movie this makes it a
Hybrid-Genre meaning my movie will appeal to more people since its
not just one genre its three genres.

Media Level 2 Task 1-2

Tommy Bowers

The target audience for my movie is Male and Females aged 18+. This
is not random as I have evidence to back up my reason for setting my
target audience to this.
I have gathered information from IMDB about the four films that are
similar to my movie I have chosen to make a scene out of.
Taken (2008) user ratings report:
As you can see by this graph it shows
that everyone has averagely voted the
movie 7.8 so everyone enjoys the movie
but as you can see there are more men
that voted for this movie meaning more
men watched this movie. This doesnt
mean I can set the target audience to
just Men because there is a lot of
Woman that have voted positively about
the movie. The reason I have set the age
rating of my movie to 18+ is because
my movie incorporates violence, drug
use and cursing. There is a small
insignificant amount of under 18 people

Media Level 2 Task 1-2

Tommy Bowers

Inception (2010) user ratings report:

This graph very similar to the Taken

graph, the only difference is that more
people have voted overall, it still shows
a difference between men and woman
and that more men have voted for this
movie. Another difference is that the
people rated this movie higher which
means its a better movie.
The graphs for Casino Royale and The
Matrix follow the same pattern as these
two graphs, the only two differences are
the overall number of people that voted

What resources are going to be used to create my film

scene?
I am going to be using my Canon 700d camera with an attachable
Rode Go microphone to capture the ambient noises and dialogue. I will
be holding the camera for the fight sequence because I want the video
to include a little shakiness as it will make the fight look more realistic.
I will also be using a tripod for some shots in my scene.
Props list:
Fake blood for making punches look like they did some damage,
Retractable plastic knife,
BB Gun,
Fake blood capsules that you bite into and it creates a frothing blood

Rope of some sort that will be used to tie the agents hands together.
