DISTANT LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

The International Association of Safety, Health and Environmental Professionals (IASHEP) believes
that professional education is the key to working in the Safety, Health and Environmental Field. As
such, IASHEP offers Distant Learning opportunities as an alternative to traditional classrooms.
IASHEP courses are taught by our faculty and maintain the same educational standards as those of
the traditional classroom with the additional flexibility and convenience of learning built around your
schedule and you can still obtain a professional credential from IASHEP by registering for our
distance learning courses.
Geographic Flexibility
IASHEP believes that distance learning can increase access to educational courses for our members
and students who are not located near an IASHEP offered classroom taught course.

Distance learning can also increase opportunities for students across the globe, ensuring that
students don't have to choose a school based solely on its location.
In many ways, taking a IASHEP distant learning course is similar to a traditional face-to-face course.
You will still have an IASHEP instructor to work with you on your class assignments and also offer
you education assistance if needed. All of the elements of a traditional course the syllabus, the
course material, textbooks, lectures, discussions, tests and grades will be part of your distant learning
course.
Global Training Opportunities To Obtain U.S. Professional Credentials and University
Degrees.
Distance learning features a number of advantages, particularly for non-U.S. students seeking an
accredited U.S. degree. Perhaps the most relevant benefit involves the luxury of remaining in your
home country while studying -- and consequently avoiding the inconvenience of applying for a student
visa to study in the United States. Other advantages include:

Accessibility for those living away from the training center No waste of time or other resources in
transport, commuting to a central location for classroom training
Flexibility to study in any convenient location with an Internet connection
Self-paced learning Quickly browse materials you have already mastered, and concentrate time
and effort in areas containing new information and / or skills
Study materials at a personal speed and intensity, without having to wait or slower pace of the
average classroom Just-in-time learning; more opportunities to study the most current material
available
Flexibility for those with irregular work schedules
Accessibility for those with restricted mobility (e.g., handicapped, injured, elderly) Accessibility for
those with family responsibilities (e.g., parents with young children at home)

Learn from the pros..

CERTIFIED ENVIRONMENTAL,HEALTH & SAFETY PROFESSIONAL
The Certified Environmental, Health & Safety Professional Certification (CEHSP) is the highest
professional certification within IASHEP. This professional certification can be obtained in each of the
IASHEP professional tracks and identifies the professional as an individual who has in-depth
knowledge of environmental, health and safety programs, procedures, and activities, and is
responsible for the establishment of safety policies, programs and methods for the organization or
entity by who the individual is employed.
Note: Should the International Association of Safety, Health and Environmental Professionals
(IASHEP) member fail to meet these obligations and continue to use their designation without the
International Association of Safety, Health, & Environmental Professionals (IASHEP) approval, their
name will be placed on the IASHEP website stating:
" The following is a listing of individuals who have claimed to hold an IASHEP designation but do not.
The uses come from a variety of sources including other credential holders, employers, and
membership organizations. IASHEP pursues all cases in which there is clear evidence of the
unauthorized use and the individual has a clear responsibility, control, or knowledge of the use.
Evidence may be a business card, resume, letter, web site, or other publications".
You will be granted the opportunity to dispute in writing to the IASHEP Board of Directors any issues
that you feel may be in error before being placed on the Unauthorized List of Certified Credential
Holders.
Completing the Process:
When a IASHEP member has completed the entire Professional General Industry track, the IASHEP
member must submit an official IASHEP Professional Application form. This form is handed out in all
IASHEP classes and is also available by request by contacting IASHEP at www.iashep.org.
Participants must provide copies of all official IASHEP courses or in the case of OTIEC Course

professional certification. Standard IASHEP member course discounts apply to challenging an
IASHEP certified course.
IASHEP understands that as a safety, health and an environmental professional, you have many

Certified Custodial & Maintenance Asbestos Awareness Specialist

Course (CAAS)
Course Length: 2 Days 1.6 CEUs
Course credential: Certified Asbestos Awareness Specialist
CAAS
Note: Refresher certification is required every three years to maintain professional
credential.)

Course Fees: $495.00

Program Overview
Training of custodial and maintenance workers is one of the keys to a successful
operations and maintenance (O&M) program. If building owners do not emphasize
the importance of well-trained custodial and maintenance personnel, asbestos O&M
tasks may not be performed properly. This could result in higher levels of asbestos
fibers in the building air and an increased risk to building workers and occupants.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires employers to
institute and ensure participation in a worker training program for employees
exposed to fiber levels (either measured or anticipated) at or above the permissible
exposure limit (0.1 fibers per cubic centimeter (f/cc) as an 8-hour, time-weighted
average (TWA) and/or the excursion limit (1.0 f/cc as a 30-minute TWA). This
training program consists of an initial training period, the duration of which is
determined by the type of work the employee performs, and annual refresher
training.
Types of Training
As an illustration of the different types of maintenance worker training, below are
two out of the three types of training under the EPA regulations.
Type 1: Awareness Training
This training is for maintenance and custodial staff involved in cleaning and minor
maintenance tasks where ACM may be accidentally disturbed.

Two-hour Asbestos Awareness Training may include such topics as:

Background information on asbestos

Health effects of asbestos

Worker protection programs

Locations of ACM in the building

Recognition of ACM damage and deterioration

The O&M program for that building.

Type 2: Special O&M Training

This training is for maintenance and custodial workers involved in general
maintenance and asbestos-containing material repair tasks.
For example, the job may involve repair or removal of a small section of damaged
thermal system insulation, or the installation of electrical conduit in an air plenum
containing ACM or ACM debris. This training generally lasts at least 14 hours.
Special O&M training usually involves more detailed discussions of the topics
included in Type 1 training as well as:

Federal, state, and local asbestos regulations

Proper asbestos-related work practices

Descriptions of the proper methods of handling ACM, including waste

handling and disposal

Respirator use, care, and fit-testing

Certified Safe Use of Glutaraldehyde in Health Care Course

Course Credential: Certified Safe Use of Glutaraldehyde in Health Care
Technician (CGHT)
Note: Refresher certification is required every three years to maintain
professional credential)
Course Fees: $295.00
Course Duration: 1 Day .8 CEU
Course Objectives:
This course describes best practices for the safe use of Glutaraldehyde in health care
facilities. Glutaraldehyde is used widely as a cold sterilant to disinfect a variety of heatsensitive instruments, such as endoscopes, bronchoscopes, and dialysis equipment
(NIOSH, 2001).

In addition, health care employees may be exposed to glutaraldehyde in its uses as a

hardener in x-ray developing and as a tissue fixative in histology and pathology labs.
Glutaraldehydes properties as a chemical sterilant were initially recognized in the early
1960s as the health care industry searched for a safer alternative to formaldehyde, which
is regulated by OSHA as a carcinogen (29 CFR 1910.1048). In the years since its
introduction as a disinfectant/sterilant, glutaraldehyde has been linked with a variety of
health effects ranging from mild to severe including asthma, breathing difficulties,
respiratory irritation, and skin rashes (Pryor, 1984; Crandall, 1987).
The purpose of this course is to provide information that can be used by health care
employers and employees to understand and control exposures to glutaraldehyde.
Alternatives to glutaraldehyde are also addressed.

Certified School Custodial Asbestos Awareness Specialist

Course (CSAAS)
Course Length: 2 Days 1.6 CEUs
Course credential: Certified School Asbestos Awareness
Specialist CSAAS
Note: Refresher certification is required every three years to maintain
professional credential.)

Course Fees: $495.00

Program Overview
Training of custodial and maintenance workers is one of the keys to a successful
operations and maintenance (O&M) program. If building owners do not emphasize
the importance of well-trained custodial and maintenance personnel, asbestos
O&M tasks may not be performed properly. This could result in higher levels of
asbestos fibers in the building air and an increased risk to building workers and
occupants.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires employers to
institute and ensure participation in a worker training program for employees
exposed to fiber levels (either measured or anticipated) at or above the

permissible exposure limit (0.1 fibers per cubic centimeter (f/cc) as an 8-hour,
time-weighted average (TWA) and/or the excursion limit (1.0 f/cc as a 30-minute
TWA). This training program consists of an initial training period, the duration of
which is determined by the type of work the employee performs, and annual
refresher training.
According to the EPA regulations governing schools, all school staff custodial and
maintenance workers who conduct any activities that may result in the disturbance
of asbestos-containing building material (ACBM) must receive 16 hours of O&M
training (comprised of 2 hours of Awareness Training and 14 hours of Special
O&M Training).
Types of Training
As an illustration of the different types of maintenance worker training, below are
two out of the three types of training under the EPA regulations governing
schools:
Type 1: Awareness Training
This training is for maintenance and custodial staff involved in cleaning and minor
maintenance tasks where ACM may be accidentally disturbed.
Two-hour Asbestos Awareness Training may include such topics as:

Background information on asbestos

Health effects of asbestos

Worker protection programs

Locations of ACM in the building

Recognition of ACM damage and deterioration

The O&M program for that building.

Type 2: Special O&M Training

This training is for maintenance and custodial workers involved in general
maintenance and asbestos-containing material repair tasks.
For example, the job may involve repair or removal of a small section of damaged
thermal system insulation, or the installation of electrical conduit in an air plenum
containing ACM or ACM debris. This training generally lasts at least 14 hours.
Special O&M training usually involves more detailed discussions of the topics
included in Type 1 training as well as:

Federal, state, and local asbestos regulations

Proper asbestos-related work practices

Descriptions of the proper methods of handling ACM, including waste

handling and disposal

Respirator use, care, and fit-testing

Protective clothing donning, use, and handling

Hands-on exercises for techniques such as glovebag work and HEPA

vacuum use and maintenance

Appropriate and proper worker decontamination procedures.

Course Description:
This course covers the hazard of working where Hydrogen Sulfide Gas may be present.
(H2S). Hydrogen Sulfide Gas (also known as H2S, sewer gas, swamp gas, stink damp,
and sour damp) is a colorless gas known for its pungent "rotten egg" odor at low
concentrations. It is extremely flammable and highly toxic also occurs naturally in sewers,
manure pits, well water, oil and gas wells, refiners, sanitation landfills and sanitation
processing facilities and elsewhewre. Because it is heavier than air, hydrogen sulfide can
collect in low-lying and enclosed spaces, such as manholes, sewers, and underground
telephone vaults. Its presence makes work in confined spaces potentially very dangerous.
It is essential that workers who work in areas where H2S may be present and especially
oil & gas and refinery workers be trained to understand and recognize the hazards
associated with Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) gas. As stated previously, Hydrogen Sulfide,
more commonly known as sour gas, is a flammable, colorless gas that is toxic at
extremely low concentrations. It is heavier than air and smells like "rotten eggs". Once
exposed, it can quickly cause you to lose your sense of smell. Exposure to Hydrogen
Sulfide gas can be fatal

Healthcare workers are exposed to many safety and health hazards. Data indicate that
healthcare workers are at high risk for experiencing violence in the workplace. In 1999,
the Bureau of Labor Statistics identified a rate of 8.3 assaults per 10,000 workers in the
healthcare industry. This rate is much higher than the rate of non-fatal assaults for all
private sector industries, which is two per 10,000 workers. The prevention of workplace
violence has emerged as an important safety issue in and around hospitals and other
healthcare facilities.
Legal Training Requirements
OSHA has warned health care institutions that it has authority under federal law to require
workplace violence training program implementation. Some states have passed laws
requiring health care workplaces to develop plans to protect employees from violence.
Obstacles to Violence Control Health care management may believe that violent incidents
must be accepted as part of the job. Staff who report violence may be subject to
management retaliation, due to fears that documenting violence will create negative
customer service scores. Health care workplace violence training programs can remove
workplace culture obstacles to reporting violent incidents and reduce levels of violence in
medical settings.
