Amazon Cloud Performance Report 2010

Introduction
This report measures how quickly files are stored (PUT) and retrieved (GET)
between an EC2 instance and S3 in the AWS cloud. We look for both the fixed and
variable costs of each operation. In future reports we will add instance types,
platforms and timeline comparisons.

Summary
Date Instance Type Platform Fixed Variable
GET PUT GET PUT
June 2010 m1.large 64-bit 1 ms 100 ms 4 MB/s 6 MB/s
May 2010 c1.medium 32-bit 1 ms 120 ms 4 MB/s 6 MB/s

Data
We present our data for the current month using file size ranges as that best
shows how the values are determined. The first data series groups files into 1KB
ranges, the second series into 10KB ranges and so forth. There are charts showing
both the fixed and variable cost for each operation.

Methodology
We tracked the number of milliseconds it takes to store and retrieve files using
JetS3T which in turn uses Commons HttpClient. Our data does not include failed
attempts.
