Toward a Conception of Culturally Responsive Classroom Management

Application: It is honestly horrifying that teachers who have never really engaged
with minorities before can be allowed to teach them. Im not saying that from a
technical standpoint they dont have the capabilities of teaching, but the cultural
disconnect will alienate both the teacher and the student in ways that will make it
difficult for students to learn. There needs to be just as many culture classes
required from teachers during their teacher preparation program as there is content
courses.
Reaction: It was interesting to read the example of the teacher losing management
control of her classroom of Haitian students and then regaining some control after
adopting traditional ways of phrasing things and using a group mentality instead of
the logic based approach that many European teachers struggle to find success
with.
Application: It is kind of hilarious that when ask, white teacher education students
are bewildered when we ask how they have been affected by their identity as
European Americans. I would kind of love to see how this same question would boil
over in the modern day classroom. I want to see that or what the responses are.
Connection: This article expresses a need for new teachers to explore white
privilege. I feel like we have never really done this in our teacher prep courses. I
have taken humanities courses here at asu and an African American literature
course, but white privilege has not been discussed in detail and I wish it would be.
