As Malaysians, most of us know at least two languages or more. It is so common that we

often do not think much of it. In reality, knowing more than one language is actually very
beneficial. It allows us to communicate with more people. It can also be very useful when
we travel to another country.
Sometimes, we would like to learn another language that is not our own. It can be for a
variety of reasons. For example,if you would like to work elsewhere other than Malaysia.
Or it can simply be just to enrich your knowledge. Whatever the reasons, learning a new
language is exciting and fun. But it can also be difficult and frustrating. In order to
maximise your language learning experience, here are some useful tips.
First of all, there are a few language basics that you have to learn regardless of what
language you are attempting to pick up. These include words, grammar and pronunciation.
Some languages also have their own alphabets that you have to learn such as Japanese and
Korean.
Once you have covered some of the basics, it is time to practise what you have learned.
Listen to, speak and read in the new language as much as you can. Put on dramas or
movies in the language and watch them without subtitles. Try to make out the message
being conveyed. Repeat what is being said to improve your pronunciation. Read
newspapers and magazines to improve your comprehension skills.
