T Scaffold - Research
Report
Due 25/11/16
You must format your report in Word so that it generates a title page and
table of contents. Number each page and put your name in the footer.

Part A
Introduction
Brief description of the problem/need to be investigated. Describe the main
characteristics and and features of your MDP.

Methodology
Identify the research methods to be used and justify why they have been
selected. Name the research methods (primary and secondary). Support an
argument or conclusion.. What were they?

Results
Collate the data. Insert graphs, tables, images etc. Interpret data collected
and the meaning that can be drawn from them.
What were the main observations in your research results?

Analysis
Identify and name components of your research and the relationship between
the results you have gathered; draw out and relate implications.
Eg. I found that people did not like my idea of a two story dog kennel and
because of this I have had to rethink my design.

Part B
Identification and justification of the
need
Design Brief

A written document for a design project

Description of the problem or need
Outlines the aims and objectives of the project
Ensures important design issues are considered and questioned before
the designer begins the project

To design and manufacture(your project)....

Motivation
Why is your design important to you? What is the primary reason that you
have chosen this project?
Eg. My motivation in designing.(your design)...is to.

Purpose

What is the purpose of designing your project?

How will it make things easier, more effective and valued by its target
market?

Eg. State the problem followed by the solution

Target Market

Who is going to buy your project?

How old are they?
Where can you find them?
Why would your target market buy your product over others on the
market?

Areas of Investigation

Parameters
Parameter

Possible implication, how will it impact on the project?

Cost

I have a budget of $340, but have priced my materials at $560.

The nature and scale of my design requires expensive materials
that cannot be compromised.

Time

I have 38 weeks to complete my MDP. 13 of these are holidays

where I equipment and other resources are not available to me.

Skill level

There are particular skills and techniques I have not used before
that could potentially impact on my design and my time
constraints.

Resources

Regulations

Does your project have to comply with safety regulations and

standards?

Research Plan

What do you need to research?

How will you do it?
What will be used to develop the project?

Area of
Investigation

Why is it
relevant to
the project?

How will it be
investigated?

Evaluate how useful this

area of investigation
was to the project

Criteria to Evaluate Success

What you need to do and how it must look in order for your project to be successful.
These are goals that are constantly referred back to to measure the success for your
design.
State what the product needs to do to meet the criteria. This enables you to judge the
level of achievement.

Aesthetics - shape, look, feel, colour (refer to the elements and principles of
design)
Function - appropriate materials
Stability
Safety?
Sustainability - renewable materials
Ergonomics?
Quality
Time management - will I get it done on time?
