PROPHETS IN BIBLE

INTRODUCTION
There have been prophets throughout every era of God's relationship with mankind,
but the books of the prophets address the "classical" period of prophecyduring the
later years of the divided kingdoms of Judah and Israel, throughout the time of exile,
and into the years of Israel's return from exile. The Prophetic Books were written
from the days of Elijah (874-853 B.C.) until the time of Malachi (400 B.C.).
A true prophet was called and equipped by God, empowered by the Holy Spirit to
perform his jobto speak God's message, confront people with sin, warn of coming
judgment and the consequences if God's people refused to repent and obey. As
"seers," prophets also brought a message of hope and future blessing for those who
walked in obedience.
Biblical prophets pointed the way to Jesus, the Messiah, and showed humans their
need of his salvation.
The Prophetic Books are divided between the Major and Minor Prophets. The terms
"major" and "minor" are meant to describe their length and the importance of their
message.
To put it simply, God chose to disclose more through the Major Prophets than
through the Minor Prophets.

verses.

The subject of Obadiah: Book of Obadiah contains the set of oracles which are
prophetic in nature. These Oracles took up wholly with the destruction of Edom for
its unbrotherly conduct toward Judah. Presenting a fore view of its complete
discrimination and Judahs deliverance in the day of the Lord. Since the book
contains 1) Destruction of Edom 2) Deliverance of Judah on the day of the Lord
Date of Obadiah: a) Obadiah is a book contains oracles presented at various times
between the end of sixth century and middle of the second century.
b) Oracles, at least few may be belong to the time period Chaldeans after the

Obadiah 1-15 in this we see the parallelism between Jeremiah 49:7-22 and Obadiah
1-9. And this portion was dated 460 B.C.
Obadiah 16-21 is written later part. Which is termed as disclosure or apocalyptic
Fancy.
Historical Context: The book of Obadiah can be placed during the reign of
Jehoram (848 841 B.C). During Jehoram reign the philistines and Arabians overran
Judah and plundered Jerusalem (2 Chronicles 21:15-17 cf Joel 3:3-6; Amos 1:6). At
the time of Edomites were particularly hostile to Judah (2 Kings 8:20-22; 2
Chronicles 21:8-20).
Obadiah and Amos: Prophet Amos (B.C 760) has acquaintance with the Prophet
Obadiah. We can see the parallelism in their books

OBADIAH: HIS VISION

SERVANT OF GOD
Reading Portion: The vision of Obadiah. Thus saith the Lord God concerning
Edom; We have heard a rumor from the Lord, and an ambassador is sent among the
heathen, Arise ye, and let us rise up against her in battle.(Obadiah 1).
Visions in Bible: vision is a supernatural presentation of certain scenery or
circumstances to the mind of a person while awake. And he said, hear now my
words: If there be a prophet among you, I the Lord will make myself known
unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream. My servant Moses is not
so, who is faithful in all mine house. With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even
apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the Lord shall he behold:
wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses? (1
Chronicles 12:6-8)
Balaam speaks of himself as having seen the vision of the Almighty. He
hath said, which heard the words of God, and knew the knowledge of the most High,
which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his
eyes open (Numbers 24:16)
In the time of Eli, it is said, And the word of the Lord was rare in those days,
the vision was infrequent (1 Samuel 3:1) ie. There was no public and recognized
revelation of the divine will. (cf 29:18, Where there is no vision, the people are
unrestrained.
Before the completion of writings of the Bible, God used to speak to prophets and
his people various means. But nowadays we should give preferences to the written
word of God. "For He received from God the Father honor and glory when such a
voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am
well pleased. And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with
Him on the holy mountain. And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you
do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place until the day dawns and the
morning star rises in your hearts;" 2 Peter 1:17-19.
Concerning Edom: Edom is a name given to the Esau after he bartered his
birthright for a mess of red stew. And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with
that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.

(Genesis 25:30) and also a place situated at the South East border of Palestine
(Judges 11:17; Number 34:3). Edomites are the descendants of Esau.
Location of Land of Edom: Judah, Moab, and land of Moab and the Dead Sea are
the borders of the Edom. Edom itself one Location. The capital of Edom is Bozrah, a
City called Teman mount range called mount Seir. Edom Overall representation
people against God, Politically, Socially, Civil, financially and Socially. Bozrah is a
religious segment, Mount Seir is political or capital and Teman is church-state
union.
Thus saith the Lord: Our Lord is a speaking God. He speaks to us. He comes down
and spoken to Adam and his descendants. He spoke to People of Israel through
Moses and his law. He came as Jesus and spoken through Jesus. The same God
Spoken to Prophet Obadiah through Vision before Jesus Christ. Outline of the

CONCERNING EDOM
OBADIAH 1:2-4
Reading Portion: "Behold, I will make you small among the nations; you shall be
greatly despised. The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who dwell in the
clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; you who say in your heart, 'Who will
bring me down to the ground? Though you ascend as high as the eagle, and though
you set your nest among the stars, from there I will bring you down," says the Lord."
Obadiah 1:2-4
The enemy of this prophecy is Edom. Obadiah. Joel is another prophet who raised
the prophecy against Edom. The following are the list of prophecies concerning
Edom.

The following portions will give the list of Prophecies against Edom.
1. "Edom shall be a possession, Seir, its enemies, also will be a possession, while
Israel performs valiantly. One from Jacob shall have dominion, and will destroy the
remnant from the city." (Numbers 24:18-19)
2. "You shall not detest an Edomite, for he is your brother; you shall not detest an
Egyptian because you were an alien in his land. The sons of the third generation
who are born to them may enter the assembly of the LORD." (Deuteronomy 23:7-8)
3. They will swoop down on the slopes of the Philistines on the west; Together they
will plunder the sons of the east; They will possess Edom and Moab, And the sons of
Ammon will be subject to them.(Isaiah 11:14)
4. The oracle concerning Moab Surely in a night Ar of Moab is devastated and
ruined; surely in a night Kir of Moab is devastated and ruined. They have gone up to
the temple and to Dibon, even to the high places to weep Moab wails over Nebo and
Medeba; Everyone's head is bald and every beard is cut off. In their streets they
have girded themselves with sackcloth; On their housetops and in their squares
Everyone is wailing, dissolved in tears. Read more.(Isaiah 15:1-9)
5. Send the tribute lamb to the ruler of the land, From Sela by way of the wilderness
to the mountain of the daughter of Zion. Then, like fleeing birds or scattered
nestlings, the daughters of Moab will be at the fords of the Arnon. "Give us advice,
make a decision; Cast your shadow like a night at high noon; Hide the outcasts, do
not betray the fugitive. Read more.(Isaiah 16:1-14)
6. For the hand of the LORD will rest on this mountain, And Moab will be trodden
down in his place As straw is trodden down in the water of a manure pile.(Isaiah
25:10)
7. Draw near, O nations, to hear; and listen, O peoples! Let the earth and all it
contains hear, and the world and all that springs from it. For the LORD'S indignation
is against all the nations, And His wrath against all their armies; He has utterly
destroyed them, He has given them over to slaughter. So their slain will be thrown
out, and their corpses will give off their stench, and the mountains will be drenched
with their blood. Read more.(Isaiah 34:1-17)
8."Behold, the days are coming," declares the LORD, "that I will punish all who are
circumcised and yet uncircumcised-- Egypt and Judah, and Edom and the sons of
Ammon, and Moab and all those inhabiting the desert who clip the hair on their
temples; for all the nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are
uncircumcised of heart."(Jeremiah 9:25-26)
9. Concerning Edom Thus says the LORD of hosts, "Is there no longer any wisdom in
Teman? Has good counsel been lost to the prudent? Has their wisdom decayed?
"Flee away, turn back, dwell in the depths, O inhabitants of Dedan, For I will bring
the disaster of Esau upon him At the time I punish him. "If grape gatherers came to

you, would they not leave gleanings? If thieves came by night, they would destroy
only until they had enough. Read more.(Jeremiah 49:7-39)
10.'Thus says the Lord GOD, "Because Edom has acted against the house of Judah
by taking vengeance, and has incurred grievous guilt, and avenged themselves
upon them," therefore thus says the Lord GOD, "I will also stretch out My hand
against Edom and cut off man and beast from it And I will lay it waste; from Teman
even to Dedan they will fall by the sword. "I will lay My vengeance on Edom by the
hand of My people Israel Therefore, they will act in Edom according to My anger and
according to My wrath; thus they will know My vengeance," declares the Lord GOD.
(Ezekiel 25:12-14)
11.Moreover, the word of the LORD came to me saying, "Son of man, set your face
against Mount Seir, and prophesy against it and say to it, 'Thus says the Lord GOD,
"Behold, I am against you, Mount Seir, And I will stretch out My hand against you
And make you a desolation and a waste.(Ezekiel 35:1-15)
12.Egypt will become a waste, And Edom will become a desolate wilderness,
Because of the violence is done to the sons of Judah, In whose land they have shed
innocent blood.(Joel 3:19)
13. Thus says the LORD, "For three transgressions of Edom and for four I will not
revoke its punishment, because he pursued his brother with the sword, While he
stifled his compassion; His anger also tore continually, And he maintained his fury
forever. So I will send fire upon Teman and it will consume the citadels of Bozrah."
Thus says the LORD, "For three transgressions of the sons of Ammon and for four I
will not revoke its punishment because they ripped open the pregnant women of
Gilead In order to enlarge their borders. Read more.(Amos 1:11-15)
Fivefold punishment for Edom
1. God had made Edom small among the heathen (v2). These are the
words of a messenger among the heathen. A call to war against Edom. For
whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be
exalted.(Mathew 23:12). In order to overcome this sin, we need to come to
the Discipline of God and humble ourselves and Obey God, his word, and the
authorities. (Mathew 19:1-4)
2. Edom was greatly despised by God (v2): where ever there is a bad thing,
there is a rejection. He that is ready to slip with his feet is as a lamp despised
in the thought of him that is at ease. (Job 12:5). He that is ready to slip with
his feet is as a lamp despised in the thought of him that is at ease. (1 Timothy
4:12).As you keep doing well, people start not to despise you.
3. Edom was proud in heart (v3). The normal meaning is pride or arrogance,
in particular, "an inner attitude of pride," often linked with parts of the human
body (Isa 2:11, 17). There is the pride of the eyes (Psalm 101:5; Isa 5:15); of
the heart (Ezekiel 28:2, 5,17); of the spirit (Prov 16:18; Eccl 7:8); and of one's
mouth/speech (1 Sam 2:3). Edom has Pride of heart. Pride leads to Uzziah's
downfall (2 Chronicles 26:16); it hardened the heart of Nebuchadnezzar (Dan
7

5:20); it goes before destruction (Prov 16:18); it does not seek God (Psalm
10:4); it brings disgrace (Prov 11:2); it breeds quarrels (Prov 13:10); it
deceives (Jer 49:16; Obad 1:3); it brings low (Prov 29:23; Isa 2:11; 23:9); it
humbles (Isa 2:17; Dan 4:37).
4. Edom was secure in false Places: Edom taught here self to be secure in
her fortress, which is a false place. God only gave these places to Edom. Do
not meddle with them, for I will not give you any of their lands, no, not so
much as one footstep, because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a
possession. (Deuteronomy 2:5)."Just as He had done for the descendants of
Esau, who dwelt in Seir, when He destroyed the Horites from before them.
They dispossessed them and dwelt in their place, even to this day.
(Deuteronomy 2:22)."And now, here are the people of Ammon, Moab, and
Mount Seirwhom You would not let Israel invade when they came out of the
land of Egypt, but they turned from them and did not destroy them"( 2
Chronicles 20:10).
Edom might have praised God for allocating the land for them and warning
Israel not to meddle with them. Instead of that, they started to focus on Land
which led them to Pride. "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit
before a fall" (Proverbs 16:18)
5. Edom exalted herself as eagle: Eagle referred to for its swiftness of flight (
Deuteronomy 28:49 ; 2 Sam 1:23 ), its mounting high in the air ( Job 39:27 ),
its strength ( Psalms 103:5 ), its setting its nest in high places ( Jeremiah
49:16 ), and its power of vision ( Job 39:27-30 ).This "ravenous bird" is a
symbol of those nations whom God employs and sends forth to do a work of
destruction, sweeping away whatever is decaying and putrescent ( Matthew
24:28 ; Isaiah 46:11 ; Ezekiel 39:4 ; Deuteronomy 28:49 ; Jeremiah 4:13 ;
48:40 ).
Edom never realized that the God, Jehovah who blessed them with beautiful
places lives in the high places which are above Eagles.

DESTRUCTION OF EDOM
OBADIAH 1:4B-7
Reading Portion: I will bring thee down: Saith the Lord (v4).
First Prophecy in Obadiah: Because of the above said five reasons God
prophesied against Edom as I will bring thee down: Saith the Lord (v4). This
prophecy got fulfilled and the place is desolate I will bring you down, declares the
LORD. If thieves came to you, if robbers in the night oh, what a disaster awaits
you! Would they not steal only as much as they wanted? If grape pickers came to
you, would they not leave a few grapes? But how Esau will be ransacked, his hidden
treasures pillaged!(Obadiah 1:4b-7).

Obadiah mentions two illustrations, one is of Robbers, and another is of grape

pickers. Thief will attack without appointment and permission, whereas grape
pickers will come with prior appointment and permissions. Thief will come in the
night and the grape picker will come in the early morning time. Thief is cunning and
cruel whereas the grape pickers are humble and look at their master for help. Thief
creates disaster to the house whereas grape pickers depend on the charity of the
master.
There are two Questions in this passage. Robbers - would they not steal only as
much as they wanted? And another is related to the grape pickers would they not
leave a few grapes?
God illustrating these two characteristics to show the way God is going to destroy
Edom. The destruction can come day time or night time. If grape pickers came to
you, would they not leave a few grapes? If thieves came during the night, would
they not steal only as much as they wanted? (Jeremiah 49:9)."What misery is mine!
I am like one who gathers summer fruit at the gleaning of the vineyard; there is no
cluster of grapes to eat, none of the early figs that I crave. The faithful have been
swept from the land; not one upright person remains. Everyone lies in wait to shed
blood; they hunt each other with nets. (Micah 7:1, 2).
Once upon a time Israel was also like the same. So God asking them Go up and
down the streets of Jerusalem, look around and consider, search through her
squares. If you can find but one person who deals honestly and seeks the truth, I
will forgive this city. Although they say, As surely as the LORD lives, still they are
swearing falsely. (Jeremiah 5:1, 2)
How Esau will be ransacked, his hidden treasures pillaged! This is a financial term.
Like Officers raid on the houses and see the properties which are open and which
are hidden. God is going to search the entire house of Edom and bring everything
into light. Income search and raids conducted by the officers has always been one
of the worst nightmares of businessmen, higher earnings, and corporates.

Search operations are carried out by a team of members from investigation wing
and usually it takes place in the morning. The search team carries a search warrant
with it for verification. The search team usually cover all the business premises of
the assessee and the residential premises of the important and key persons of the
assessee like the partners of the assessee firm; directors of the company etc. and
can extend up to two to three days. It may also cover residential premises of close
relatives, friends, business associates etc. These may change a bit from country to
country.

EDOMS SIN

OBADIAH 1:7-9
Reading Portion: All your allies will force you to the border; your friends will
deceive and overpower you; but you will not detect it. In that day, declares the
LORD, will I not destroy the wise men of Edom, those of understanding in the
mountains of Esau? Your warriors, Teman, will be terrified, and everyone in Esaus
mountains will be cut down in the slaughter. (Obadiah 1:7-9)
Positive things: 1) Edom has allies 2) Edom has Friends 3) There are nations who ate
the bread of Edom 4) There are wise men in Edom 5) There are warriors in Edom.
For a nation to with stand and be mighty nation the above said are necessary. But
Edom will become 1) Weak 2) Get deceived 3) Get trapped 4) no power to detect 5)
get destroyed
Reasons are that they became proud of what they have. They depended more on
the things they have than the God who promised them they will become great
nation and kept their destiny.
There are eight predictions which are fulfilled
1)
2)
3)
4)
5)
6)
7)

All your allies will force you to the border

All your friends will deceive
All your friends will overpower you
All your allies will force you to the border
All the wise men of Edom will be destroyed
The mighty men will be dismayed
Everyone will be cut off by slaughter

In verse 10 there are other two 1) Shame will cover you 2) you will be cut off
forever. We need to be wise enough in dealing with our friends, allies. We should
submit all our relations into the hand of God. First we need to deal with our selves.
Our flesh is great enemy we need to deal with it.
For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at
work in our members to bear fruit for death. (Romans 7:5). This flesh in us doesnt
allow us to do good what we ought to do.
Some depends on their strength instead of God (Job 12:6), some depend on their
tongue and lips (Psalm 12:4; Some depends on their hand work (Hosea 14:3), Some
think their stomach is their God (Philippians 3:19).
We no need to depend on any of the above said ones, we need to completely
surrender on the God, Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your
own understanding. (Proverbs 3:5). If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God,
who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. (James 1:5,
6)

EDOMS DESTRUCTION IS
EXPLAINED
OBADIAH 1:10-14

Because of the violence against your brother Jacob, you will be covered with shame;
you will be destroyed forever. On the day you stood aloof while strangers carried off
his wealth and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were
like one of them. You should not gloat over your brother in the day of his misfortune,
nor rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction, nor boast so
much in the day of their trouble. You should not march through the gates of my
people in the day of their disaster, nor gloat over them in their calamity in the day
of their disaster, nor seize their wealth in the day of their disaster You should not
wait at the crossroads to cut down their fugitives, nor hand over their survivors in
the day of their trouble. (Obadiah 1:10-14)
In verse 10-11 Prophet is explaining the reason for Gods anger on the Edom.
Because of the violence against your brother Jacob. Another reason is Edom
stood aloof while strangers carried off his wealth and foreigners entered the gates
of Israels. For this reason God Said
1. You will be covered with share (v 10)
2. You will be destroyed forever (v11)
A similar statement was there on Edom 3. You will be utterly despised (v2) 4. You
will not detect it (v7).
Similarly, the flesh inside us brings violence against the spiritual work in us and
flesh joins with the external circumstances and fights against us. Just as God
declared war on Edom we need to declare war against the flesh in us.
Seven things Edom might not have done: There are seven things that Edom
might have not done.

The word day appears 10 times in the book of Obadiah. 3 times it is referring to
Edom 6 times it refers to Judah and one time it is Day of Jehovah
Day related to Edom: In that day declares the Lord (Obadiah 1: 8) On the day
you stood aloof (Obadiah 1: 11).
Day related to Judah: In the day of Judahs misfortune (1:12), In the day of
their destruction (1:12) In the day of their trouble (1:12). In the day of their
disaster On Place (1:13) in the day of their distress On people (1:13) In the
day of their disaster On property( 1:13) In the day of their trouble (1:14)
There are seven different days the Judah went through. The reasons may vary, it
may be because of their weakness, their trespass or God wants to teach them a
lesson. Judah is God Chosen generation God has specific plans for them. In mean
time because of various reasons, they will go through all the days mentioned. Still,
God is going to deliver them from all. As the Spiritual person goes through various
days, Flesh also starts mocking on the spiritual growth, which should not happen.
Lets not allow our flesh to us be a hindrance to the Gods work for our spiritual
growth.

EDOMS SIN JUDGED

OBADIAH 1:15-16
The day of the LORD is near for all nations. As you have done, it will be done to
you; your deeds will return upon your own head. Just as you drank on my holy hill,
so all the nations will drink continually; they will drink and drink and be as if they
had never been." (Obadiah 1:15,16)
The day of the Lord is near for all nations: The phrase the Day of the Lord
appears 24 times in the entire Bible. 19 times in Old Testament and 5 times in New
Testament.
The day of the Lord in Old Testament: Wail, for the day of the LORD is near; it
will come like destruction from the Almighty.( Isaiah 13:6) See, the day of the LORD
is coming a cruel day, with wrath and fierce anger to make the land desolate
and destroy the sinners within it.(Isaiah 13:9).As you summon to a feast day They
will throw their silver into the streets, and their gold will be treated as a thing
unclean. Their silver and gold will not be able to deliver them on the day of the
LORDs wrath. It will not satisfy their hunger or fill their stomachs, for it has caused
them to stumble into sin.(Ezekiel 7:19)You have not gone up to the breaches in the
wall to repair it for the people of Israel so that it will stand firm in the battle on the
day of the LORD.(Ezekiel 13:5)

12

For the day is near, the day of the LORD is near a day of clouds, a time of doom
for the nations.(Ezekiel 30:3 )Alas for that day! For the day of the LORD is near; it
will come like destruction from the Almighty.(Joel 1:15)Blow the trumpet in Zion;
sound the alarm on my holy hill. Let all who live in the land tremble, for the day of
the LORD, is coming. It is close at hand(Joel 2:1 )The LORD thunders at the head of
his army; his forces are beyond number, and mighty is the army that obeys his
command. The day of the LORD is great; it is dreadful. Who can endure it?(Joel
2:11)Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the day of the LORD is near
in the valley of decision.(Joel 3:14 )Woe to you who long for the day of the LORD!
Why do you long for the day of the LORD? That day will be darkness, not light.(Amos
5:18)Will not the day of the LORD be darkness, not light pitch-dark, without a ray
of brightness?(Amos 5:20 )The day of the LORD is near for all nations. As you have
done, it will be done to you; your deeds will return upon your own head.(Obadiah
1:15 )Be silent before the Sovereign LORD, for the day of the LORD is near. The
LORD has prepared a sacrifice; he has consecrated those he has invited.(Zephaniah
1:7 )On the day of the LORDs sacrifice, I will punish the officials and the kings
sons and all those clad in foreign clothes.(Zephaniah 1:8 )The great day of the LORD
is near near and coming quickly. The cry on the day of the LORD is bitter; the
Mighty Warrior shouts his battle cry.(Zephaniah 1:14 )Neither their silver nor their
gold will be able to save them on the day of the LORDs wrath. In the fire of his
jealousy the whole earth will be consumed, for he will make a sudden end of all who
live on the earth.(Zephaniah 1:18 )before the decree takes effect and that day
passes like windblown chaff, before the LORDs fierce anger comes upon you, before
the day of the LORDs wrath comes upon you.(Zephaniah 2:2 )Seek the LORD, all
you humble of the land, you who do what he commands. Seek righteousness, seek
humility; perhaps you will be sheltered on the day of the LORDs anger.(Zephaniah
2:3 )
The day of the Lord in New Testament: hand this man over to Satan for the
destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord. (1
Corinthians 5:5 )as you have understood us in part, you will come to understand
fully that you can boast of us just as we will boast of you in the day of the Lord
Jesus.(2 Corinthians 1:14) for you know very well that the day of the Lord will
come like a thief in the night.(1 Thessalonians 5:2)not to become easily unsettled or
alarmed by the teaching allegedly from uswhether by a prophecy or by word of
mouth or by letterasserting that the day of the Lord has already come.(2
Thessalonians 2:2)But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens
will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and
everything is done in it will be laid bare. (2 Peter 3:10)
Nowhere from the above verses, we get that is They day of the Lord (Jesus) or the
day of the Lord (Jehovah) Sunday. The day of the Lord (Jehovah) will start after the
church caught up.
After the church lifted or raptured into heaven, the day of the Lord Jehovah starts
with the coming of the Lord to the earth ie. Mount Olives and ends the formation of
new heaven and new earth. During this period Lord will take judgment on all nations
13

and he stands beside Judah and declares war against all nations. The day of the
LORD is near for all nations (Obadiah 1:10). Read Isaiah 65:17-19; 66:22; 2
Thessalonians 2:2; 2 Peter 3:13; Rev 21:1).
On the day of the Lord, he will be visible manifest himself (Christ) on the earth.
The day of the Lord comprehends specifically the closing phase of the tribulation
and extends through the millennium kingdom.
As we saw that the day of the futuristic in nature. The day of the Lord: There is a
twofold meaning. The first one we already saw it. the second one is "The day of
the Lord," a common term in the Prophets, refers generally to any time when
God intervenes in human affairs to accomplish His will. "For the day is near, Even
the day of the LORD is near; It will be a day of clouds, A time of doom for the
nations" (Ezekiel 30:3)."Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the day
of the LORD is near in the valley of decision." (Joel 3:14)
Is near upon all the heathen (v15b): if bible mentions the nation it's Israel if
its the nations its heathen and or non-Israelites. Edom's demise as a nation
before the Second Comingwere part of God's judgment on her, but the prophet
saw all God's judgments on Edom and the nations, which will culminate in the
eschaton (end times). All the prophets had difficulty seeing the proximity of the
future events that they predicted to one another "trying to determine the time and
setting to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when He predicted the
sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow." 1 Pet. 1:11. "As thou best rejoiced over
the inheritance of the house of Israel because it was laid waste, so will I do to thee:
thou shalt be laid waste, O mount Seir, and all Idumea: and they shall know that I
am the Lord." (Ezekiel 35:15). "Because thou hast spoiled many nations, all that
shall be left of the people shall spoil thee: because of men's blood, and for the
iniquity of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell therein." (Habakkuk 2:8)
Edom has his day: For as you have drunk upon my holy mountain, so all nations
shall drink continually: and they shall drink, and sup up, and they shall be as though
they were not. (V16). Edom has its day who dominated the Israel, likewise heathen
or nation has their own day which dominating the nation Israel.
Times of Gentiles: This period of history began when Nebuchadnezzar removed
Israels sovereignty in 586 B.C. and will end when Jesus Christ returns to the earth
and restores Israels sovereignty. During "the times of the Gentiles" Israel is
being "trodden down by the Gentiles" (Luke 21:24). Obadiah described Israel's
enemies as drinking there in celebration of their dominion over the Israelites.
So the next day they rose early and offered burnt offerings, and brought peaceofferings, and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play. "Exod.
32:6; "When he had brought him down, behold, they were spread over all the land,
eating and drinking and dancing because of all the great spoil that they had taken
from the land of the Philistines and from the land of Judah. " 1 Sam. 30:16.

REDEMPTION OF ISRAEL
OBADIAH 1:17-21
Reading Portion: But on Mount Zion will be deliverance; it will be holy, and Jacob
will possess his inheritance. Jacob will be a fire and Joseph a flame; Esau will be
stubble, and they will set him on fire and destroy him. There will be no survivors
from Esau. The LORD has spoken. People from the Negev will occupy the
mountains of Esau, and people from the foothills will possess the land of the
Philistines. They will occupy the fields of Ephraim and Samaria, and Benjamin will
possess Gilead. This company of Israelite exiles who are in Canaan will possess the
land as far as Zarephath; the exiles from Jerusalem who are in Shepard will possess
the towns of the Negev. Deliverers will go up on Mount Zion to govern the
mountains of Esau. And the kingdom will be the LORDs. (Obadiah 1:17-21).
The above verses are from the portion of the third prophecy (v15-21) which were to
be fulfilled. From has two portions
1. Deliverance of Israel from the enemies
2. Restoration of Israel
Deliverance of Israel from the enemies (v 17): In verse 17 we see three unfulfilled
prophecies
1. 5th unfulfilled Prophecy: But on Mount Zion will be deliverance (v17)
2. 6th unfulfilled prophecy: There will be holiness (v17)
3. 7th unfulfilled Prophecy: The house of Jacob will possess their Possessions.
5th unfulfilled Prophecy: But on Mount Zion will be deliverance (v17) God is
the creator of all men. He is going to set the boundaries of all nations in his time.
"From one man he created all the nations throughout the whole earth. He decided
beforehand when they should rise and fall, and he determined their boundaries. His
purpose was for the nations to seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward
him and find himthough he is not far from any one of us.(Acts 17:26-27).
Related verses: "Before she goes into labor, she gives birth; before the pains come
upon her, she delivers a son. Who has ever heard of such things? Who has ever
seen things like this? Can a country be born in a day or a nation be brought forth in
a moment? Yet no sooner is Zion in labor than she gives birth to her children."
(Isaiah 66:7-8). And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of
Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on me whom they
pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for
Him as one grieves for a firstborn." (Zechariah 12:10)."For I do not desire, brethren,
that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own
opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the
Gentiles has come in. 26 And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: The
Deliverer will come out of Zion, And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob; For

15

this is My covenant with them When I take away their sins. Concerning the gospel
they are enemies for your sake, but concerning the election they are beloved for the
sake of the fathers. For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. For as you
were once disobedient to God, yet have now obtained mercy through their
disobedience, even so, these also have now been disobedient, that through the
mercy shown you they also may obtain mercy. For God has committed them all to
disobedience, that He might have mercy on all."(Romans 11:25-32).

6th unfulfilled Prophecy: There will be holiness (v17). This shows the
character of the kingdom. "In that day HOLINESS TO THE LORD shall be engraved
on the bells of the horses. The pots in the Lords house shall be like the bowls before
the altar. Yes, every pot in Jerusalem and Judah shall be holiness to the Lord of
hosts.[a] Everyone who sacrifices shall come and take them and cook in them. In
that day there shall no longer be a Canaanite in the house of the Lord of hosts."
(Zechariah 14:20-21). This is absolute holiness of God in His kingdom. There will be
no Canaanite in the eternal capital of God as explained in (Ezekiel 43:7).

7th unfulfilled Prophecy: The house of Jacob will possess their

Possessions. Obadiah used the word "Possess" repeatedly and became popular by
this word. We can see the similar word seven times in these verses. The boundaries
of Israel are defined in "On the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram,
saying: "To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the
great river, the River Euphrates-- the Kenites, the Kenezzites, the Kadmonites, the
Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites,
and the Jebusites." (Genesis 15:18-21). From the days of Promises Israelites trying
to occupy the lands, but they never enjoyed the full land promised by God. But a
day will come, they day is the millennium period, during the reign of Christ just a
promised in these verses the sons of Jacob will possess the lands. But Egypt will be
desolate, Edom a desert waste, because of violence is done to the people of Judah,
in whose land they shed innocent blood. Judah will be inhabited forever and
Jerusalem through all generations. Shall I leave their innocent blood unavenged?
No, I will not. The LORD dwells in Zion! (Joel 3:19-21). "On that day I will raise up
the tabernacle of David, which has fallen down, and repair its damages; I will raise
up its ruins, and rebuild it as in the days of old; that they may possess the remnant
of Edom, And all the Gentiles who are called by my name," Says the Lord who does
this thing. Behold, the days are coming," says the Lord, "When the plowman shall
overtake the reaper, and the trader of grapes him who sows seed; the mountains
shall drip with sweet wine, and all the hills shall flow with it, I will bring back the
captives of My people Israel; They shall build the waste cities and inhabit them;
They shall plant vineyards and drink wine from them; They shall also make gardens
and eat fruit from them. I will plant them in their land, And no longer shall they be
pulled up From the land I have given them," Says the Lord your God. (Amos 9:11-

16

15). Every word is going to fulfill literally during the millennium after the church
caught up.
Edom will be utterly destroyed (v18). There is four unfulfilled prophecies are
there
o
o
o
o

6th unfulfilled prophecy: The house of Jacob will be a fire (v18)

7th unfulfilled prophecy: The house of Joseph will be a flame (v18)
8th unfulfilled prophecy: The house of Esau will be stubble and they will
kindle in them (v18)
9th unfulfilled prophecy : None of the house of Esau will be left alive
(v18)

Even there are traces of victory of the enemy is there, the final and ultimate victory
is of Lords and it is eternal. We see the similar prophecy in these verses "And the
governors of Judah shall say in their heart, 'The inhabitants of Jerusalem are my
strength in the Lord of hosts, their God. 'In that day I will make the governors of
Judah like a firepan in the woodpile, and like a fiery torch in the sheaves; they shall
devour all the surrounding peoples on the right hand and on the left, but Jerusalem
shall be inhabited again in her own place--Jerusalem. The Lord will save the tents of
Judah first so that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of
Jerusalem shall not become greater than that of Judah. In that day the Lord will
defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; the one who is feeble among them in that day
shall be like David, and the house of David shall be like God, like the Angel of the
Lord before them. It shall be in that day that I will seek to destroy all the nations
that come against Jerusalem." (Zechariah 12:5-9). Nowadays we see the Arabs are
the Edomites Or Arabs has Edomites mixed in them. They always declare war
against Judah. But on that day's nations wont stand before Judah just as enemy
wont stand before church. (Mathew 16:18). All the mentioned five prophecies will
be fulfilled without any doubt. Deliverance of Israel from the enemies (v 19): There
are five unfulfilled prophecies in this verses
a. 10th unfulfilled prophecy: They of the south possess the land of Esau
b. 11th unfulfilled Prophecy: They of the plain of Philistia will be
possessed by them
c. 12th unfulfilled Prophecy: They will possess the fields of Ephraim
d. 13th unfulfilled Prophecy: They will also possess the fields of Samaria
e. 14th unfulfilled Prophecy: Benjamin will possess Gilead.
The enemies we see in this verse are 1. Edomites 2. Philistines and the places
are 1. Fields of Ephraim 2. Fields of Samaria and of Gilead. Christ will come and
gives victory over Edomites and philistines and get the fields from them and gives
unto the Israelites in that Benjamin will possess Gilead.
Reading portion: And the captivity of this host of the children of Israel shall
possess that of Canaanites, even unto Zarephath, and the captivity of Jerusalem,
which is in shepherd, shall possess the cities of the south (Obadiah 1:20).

17

There is 15th prophecy in this verse which is not fulfilled. We need to read this verse
along with Verse 17th and 19th which talks about the Possessing of Lands.
'Zarephath' (modern Sarafand (ie Spain), Lebanon) was a Phoenician city on the
Mediterranean coast between Sidon and Tyre.
When we see the way Israel is going to possess the lands they are going to occupy
in all the four directions. Towards south there is a place called Zarephath. Towards
north there is a place called Edom and towards west they have Philistines country
and towards east there is a Gilead. In Lords return i.e. on the Day of the Lord God is
going to judge all the nations and Israel will enjoy the lands they possess.
During this period whether we are an Israelite, Edomite or Indian we need to
exercise independence which we obtained in Christ. He is the one who makes us
free (John 8:34). We need to pray upon the Pauls prayers (Ephesians 1:15-23;
Ephesians 3:11-19; Colossians 1:8-11). We should not allow flesh in possessing the
lands but we need to do under the spiritual guidance of Christ (John 1:16). We need
to possess all the promises we have in Christ (Hebrew 6:11, 12). We need to
expand in all directions instead of growing tall and useless.
.

SAVIOURS ON MT ZION
OBADIAH 1:21
Reading Portion: And saviours shall come upon mount Zion to judge the mount of
Esau: and the kingdom shall be lords (Obadiah 1:21).
There are two prophecies in this verse
1. Saviors will come upon the mountain Zion
2. The kingdom will be Lords
Saviors will come upon the mountain Zion: Mount Zion is a hill in Jerusalem
just outside the walls of the Old City. The term Mount Zion has been used in the
Hebrew Bible first for the City of David (2 Samuel 5:7, 1 Chronicles 11:5; 1 Kings
8:1, 2 Chronicles 5:2) and later for the Temple Mount, but its meaning has shifted
and it is now used as the name of ancient Jerusalem's so-called Western Hill. In a
wider sense, the term is also used for the entire Land of Israel. Zion means
Fortress.
When Christ comes he is going to declare Mt.Zion as capital for His kingdom. "In the
last days the mountain of the Lords temple will be established as the highest of the
mountains; it will be exalted above the hills, and peoples will stream to it. Many
nations will come and say, Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the
temple of the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his
paths. The law will go out from Zion, the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. He will

18

judge between many peoples and will settle disputes for strong nations far and
wide. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning
hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war
anymore. Everyone will sit under their own vine and under their own fig tree, and no
one will make them afraid, for the Lord Almighty has spoken. All the nations may
walk in the name of their gods, but we will walk in the name of the Lord our God for
ever and ever." (Micah 4:1-5)
We know that Christ alone is the Savior and the saviors in the verse means the
one who delivers.
