PDP goal (2) assessment:

Week (3) & (4)

First, before I started with assessment I read the benefits of formative assessments for teaching
and learning article from the library databases to learn in depth about the difference between
formative and summative assessments. In brief, summative means mid-term exams, final exams
and final project; however, formative means ongoing assessments such as let them answer some
questions, let them write some sentences, observations and let them brainstorm after learning
(Bakula, 2010).
Second, I started my assessment strategies with using observation. During activity time I always
observe students and see who did not understand and give them one to one support. I usually use
this strategy in all lessons; however, sometimes I found it really challenges when there are large
number of students who need help. So after that I decided to let students help each other if they
finish like pair assessment. I found it effective sometimes and work well but I always have to
remind the students who giving help not give the answers but scaffold the leaning such as I said to
them read the question for the student and explain it and there are some capable students do it well.
Second, another assessment strategy that I used is asking questions during the lesson to check if
students understand or not. Also, sometimes I wrote question on the board and let them solve it on
their white boards so then I can assess whose understand and whos not. I really like using the
white boards and it is really interesting way and fast to assess students understanding (see
Appendix: whiteboards). Then my next step would be do revision for them on the next class
regarding the points that they struggle on it.
Third, I assess students while they are reading in the class and I find out a lot of students struggle
in reading and I thought about making reading sessions for them during the break so I take group
of them and I do reading sessions (see Appendix: reading session 1). I face some challenges which
is sometimes the students are participating in school activities so they miss the reading session and
sometimes Im busy with something at school so I could not do the reading session. Moreover,
there are large number of students who are weak in reading and I observe even in the exams the
teachers read for the students. My plan would be take more students and change in every week so
all students take chance to reading sessions. Also, during my lessons I always focus in reading and
I let them read with me so gradually they will develop their reading. I really want to continue the
reading sessions because students are very excited about reading and they enjoy it and I love that
so much and whenever I change the students they all shouted we want to read. Thats really made
me feel happy and motivated also to continue the reading sessions because that will not affect only
on students learning it will also effect on me as I will have opportunity to develop my teaching
and reading techniques especially.

Week (4):
During this week I will continue using observation strategy to assess students, I will continue using
asking questions to assess them and I will do the reading sessions and I will take more students
and every week I will change to give opportunity for all students. My next step for this week is
using another type of assessment which is using checklist to write who achieve the lesson
objectives and whose not so in the second lesson I will address and review all the areas that they
struggle on. Also, at the end of the week I will do short quiz to assess students understanding and
see their weakness in writing and make notes to scaffold them in the next lessons because
assessment is not just helps the students it also helps the teacher identify their weakness and things
that they should work on. It also stated in the article that assessments helping the teachers to
identify what they taught well in the class and what they need to work on (Guskey, 2003).
I started to use checklist and I found it really effective and quick we to assess students
understanding and achieving the learning objectives. During my lessons I always busy with
supporting students so I did not have time to write notes so checklists are bright way because
before the class I will write what things that I will assess them on and then during the lesson I will
just make tick and observe students. I think it work well and I will continue using it during my
lessons and that will also help me in future planning and in next lessons to focus on things that the
students are struggle on (see Appendix: checklist).
At the end of the week I did a short quiz to asses students in the previous lessons. I gave them the
short quiz and set time for them. Then I collected the quiz and analysis it and write the things that
students still struggle on it and it was few. Students have grasp the content and also improve
slightly in writing and they remember the points that I taught them such as start with capital letter,
write on the line and end the sentence with full stop. Around 60% of students write very good
sentences and most of them grasp the key vocabulary. Regarding the writing some of them make
mistakes in grammar, forgot the verb, some spelling mistakes and very few forgot to start with
capital letter. I really feel that I achieved something important because starting with ongoing
assessments is vitally significant to assess students and then plan further. I found it quick way and
method of assessment and effective because the teacher then have time to analysis students work
(see Appendix: quiz 1). I will continue using short quizzes to assess students understanding in the
following week (see Appendix: quiz 2). Also, I felt really happy about the improvement of the
students in writing because at the beginning there were few number of students saying and writing
sentences and now half of the class.
Assessment is one of the teaching competencies that all teachers should improve during their
journey in teaching and it is a crucial aspect in teaching both for teachers and students because it
indicates students difficulties. I feel confident about his goal and I achieved by 80% because I
used different types of assessments successfully to realize students difficulty and plan further such

as do revision and remind them of the key things in writing. Moreover, on my last observation my
MST gives me a good comments about using the assessments and she said that I improved a lot
(Appendix: MST last observation).

(Appendix: whiteboards)
Asked students question about memory they have and I let them write on their whiteboards then I
assess their understanding and writing.

I did the reading sessions for the students. For few days I used the data show to present the story
and then I use my laptop to do the reading session so they are closer to me and they more engage.
