3.

Configuration/Operation
The high pressure fire extinguisher HDL 250 is an electrically independent
machine to extinguish class A and class B fires by means of water atomised
under high pressure with the option of foam agent dosing. The extraordinary
efficiency of the high pressure fire extinguisher results from the atomisation of
the water at a working pressure of up to 250 bar. By atomisation the surface of
the water respectively foam agent solution is extremely extended so effecting
a rapid evaporation. The high extinguishing efficiency is based on the synergetic effect of heat extraction from the fire by evaporation and reduction of the
oxigen concentration by the steam. A significant advantage is the fact that
damage caused by water is practically avoided. The high pressure
extinguishing hose is steel-reinforced, heat resistant, extraordinarily light,
flexible and so easily manoeuvrable. It allows the rapid fire-attack in a distance
of 50 m from the HDL. The fire assault device allows the quick roll-over from
high pressure water mist to heavy foam to high pressure net water mist, as
required.
Depending on requirements at site the following extinguishing options are
available:
Model

Extinguishing Agent
Fire Class A
Fire Class B
- high pressure water mist
-/HDL 250 WS
- high pressure net water mist - high pressure net water mist
- heavy foam
- heavy foam
The high pressure fire extinguisher HDL mainly consists of a low speed high
pressure inline plunger pump which is driven by a low emission four stroke Vmotor. The motor is protected against dry-running by a low oil level cut-out
which stops the motor in case of low oil level.
The water is directed via filling valve with strainer into the vented water
storage tank, where it is taken via an Y-filter from by the high pressure pump
which boosts it together with the diameter of the respective extinguishing
nozzle up to required working pressure.
A safety control valve is arranged downstreams of the high pressure pump,
which opens as soon as the operating pressure is exceeded by more than
10 % and returns the water which cannot be taken by the nozzle back into the
suction line of the high pressure pump.
Depending on requirements at site, the support roll-over handle at the
extinguishing device allows the quick roll-over from high pressure water mist to
foam/high pressure net water mist (fire class A/B) at opened foam dosing
valve.

The machine is equipped with a circulation shut-off system and additionally

with a thermovalve, in order to protect the high pressure pump against
overheating. After closing the extinguishing pistol, the safety/control valve
opens and returns the circulating water into the suction line of the pump. If the
water temperature in this operating condition exceeds 60 C, the thermovalve
opens, releases hot water and in parallel allows small amounts of cold water to
enter. When opening the extinguishing pistol again, adjusted working pressure
is generated immediately so that extinguishing can be continued without delay.
The HDL 250 is available in the following standard versions:
Fixed installation:
Installation module with 125 l water storage tank, foam agent supply from
external tank.
Mobile version:
Mobile unit on wheels with 125 l water storage tank, hoop guards, installation
fittings for DIN foam agent tank 20 l. Foam agent supply from external tank.
Tailor-made versions to meet special requirements are available on request.
The range of applications can be extended by a variety of accessories
available from OERTZEN Fire-Tec. Contact your local distributor.

In case of temperatures below freezing point, particularly note:

The low amounts of water in the high pressure hose may freeze and damage
the machine. Therefore work should not be interrupted unless fire is
extinguished.
In order to guarantee readiness for use in case of frost during fire watch a
continuous low water flow should be ensured as follows:

Motor to be in idle running mode

Foam agent dosing valve (11) to be closed (vertical position).
Pump pressure to be reduced to a minimum by turning the pressure
regulating valve (12) counter-clockwise.
Stop valve extinguishing pistol (23) to be opened, so allowing a low water
flow emerging out of the atomisation nozzle (28) at low pressure.
Ensure sufficient water supply.

After work
Foam agents are corrosive. Residues have therefore to be flushed out of the
system as follows (keep in sequences):

Start motor and keep it running at moderate speed.

Remove foam agent suction hose from foam agent tank and put it into a
vessel with clean water.
Open foam agent dosing valve (11) so that the hose will be flushed with
water.
Turn support/roll-over handle (26) downward, open stop valve on
extinguishing pistol (23), so that the liquid emerges from the atomisation
nozzle (28).
Close stop valve on extinguishing pistol (23) after 10 seconds and alternately open and close it approx. 10 times so that pump, hoses and valves
are cleaned from foam agent residues.
Open stop valve on extinguishing pistol again and keep water running out
of the atomisation nozzle (28) for 30 seconds so that the complete pipe
system is cleaned from foam agent residues.
Afterwards, close stop valve on extinguishing pistol, turn support/ roll-over
handle (26) into position foam, open stop valve on extinguishing pistol for
a few seconds so that the foam nozzle is cleaned from foam agent
residues.
Close foam agent dosing valve (11).
Run motor in idle running mode for 2 minutes.
Stop motor. Release extinguishing pistol (23) in order to de-pressurise the
system.
In order to avoid germ formation/biological growth in the water
storage tank the water to be mixed with a disinfectant, e.g.
Desalgin make BAYROL (5 ml/125 l of water).

17

Final Steps

Lock stop valve (23) of extinguishing pistol in order to avoid accidental

activation.

Carry out frost protection as described before.

Place high pressure extinguishing hose in a straight line and check for
damage.

For cleaning purposes pull high pressure hose through a moist cloth during
reeling up.

Swing in hand crank (13), push it through the axle as far as possible in
order to avoid blockage during next reeling up. Lock hand crank (17) with
T-screw.

Put extinguishing pistol (rapid-attack-device) (19) into holder (20) and lock
it.

Never unreel extinguishing hose while hand crank is swung out. Keep

operation, poor maintenance.

20

Frost Protection I. High Pressure Pump / Suction Line

Frost protection of the entire water system is of vital interest, as
otherwise heavy damage and serious risks during operation will be the
result.
The best frost protection method is to store the machine in a frostprotected area.
If the unit will be exposed to freezing temperatures during transport/storage
and there is a risk that high pressure pump and/or suction line will freeze,
carry out frost protection as follows:
a.

Fill approx. 10 l consisting of a 2 : 1 mixture of water and a commercial

anti-freeze (e.g. Glysantin) in a separate vessel and feed it into the
system via the high pressure pump (5).

b.

Losen swivel (24) on extinguishing pistol (23) and remove fire assault
device.

c.

Start motor and let run at low speed, adjust pressure regulating valve
(12) to a low value (counter-clockwise).

d.

Open stop valve (23) so allowing the high pressure pump to suck in the
anti-freeze. As soon as the anti-freeze emerges from the extinguishing
pistol, the emerging stream to be directed into the anti-freeze vessel
(Frost Protection II: into the water tank filled with anti-freeze liquid) so
that the anti-freeze liquid is circulating through the system.

f.

Open and close the stop valve (23) 10 times so that the entire pump
system is filled with the anti-freeze liquid.

g.

Keep anti-freeze liquid in circulation for further 2 minutes, then stop

motor. De-pressurise high pressure section by releasing the stop valve
on extinguishing pistol. Re-connect high fire assault device with
extinguishing pistol, reel up high pressure hose, lock hose reel, lock
stop valve of extinguishing pistol, insert and lock extinguishing pistol
into holder (20).

21

Frost Protection II. High Pressure Fire Extinguisher/Water Tank

If the unit with full water tank will be exposed to freezing temperatures during
transport/storage, there is a risk that the entire unit will freeze. Frost protection
can be carried out by adding calcium chloride scales CaCl2 77/80 %, however
the following limits to be observed:

Foam agent AFFF 3 % is most suitable for extinguishing class A and B

fires. If CaCl2 is added, be aware that foam expansion rates at decreasing
temperatures will significantly drop. Better results are achieved when using
AFFF 1 % at higher concentration instead.

Fire extinguishers which are frost-protected by means of CaCl2 must not be

used to extinguish burning electric installations/cables, due to risk of
electric shock.

Calcium chloride scales 77/80 % CaCl2 are available locally.

For further details contact the manufacturer of the fire extinguisher.
We will provide detailed frost protection instructions on request.
