The number of Jewish children

at schools in the community has
increased fivefold over two generations, despite the population shrinking by a quarter during this time, new
figures published today reveal.
A report by the Institute for Jewish
Policy Research (JPR) shows there are
now more than 30,000 attending a Jewish
school in Britain representing two-thirds
of all Jewish children in the country.
Just 40 years ago, one-fifth attended a
Jewish school.
Jonathan Boyd, co-author of the report
and JPR director, said the growth of the
British-Jewish school sector over time
had been nothing short of extraordinary,
adding: The reasons why it has happened

Since the 1950s, the number of Jewish
pupils in Jewish schools has increased by
500 percent, with a 25 percent increase

seen over the past decade alone. During
this time, the number of Jewish schools
has risen from just 26 to 139 by 2014, an
increase of 400 percent, which Boyd said
was no less spectacular.
Fuelling the explosive growth has been
the burgeoning Charedi communities in
London, Manchester and Gateshead, with
the number of strictly-Orthodox children
attending Jewish schools in Manchester
tripling in just 20 years. This means that
the city has now increased its share of
Charedi pupils from one in five to one in
four of the total.

in Jewish schools, 40 percent attended

Baroness Julia Neuberger of West London Synagogue has revealed she has applied for a German
passport and said she would use it proudly.
The senior Reform rabbi told The Guardian
that although members of her mothers family
were killed or affected by the Holocaust, she was
impressed by how Germany had dealt with its
Nazi past. She also praised Chancellor Angela
Merkel for providing safe haven for refugees.

camp during the Holocaust, where they are presumed to have died, and the baroness admitted
to feeling pretty negative about Germany for
50 years.
But although Neuberger explained that antiSemitic comments on the left of British politics

but with my origins, my admiration for how
todays Germany has dealt with its past, and my
sense of being European as well as British.
I am a European as well as a proud Briton.
I have many intersecting identities as, I
would argue, we all do. Im British, a passionate
monarchist, a Londoner, European, female,
Jewish, with strong Irish connections the list
goes on.
On Britain, she said: This is my home, and
I love my country even when Im critical of
it. Assuming I am granted a German passport,
I shall use it proudly.

Isaac Herzog has told Jeremy Corbyn he

invite him to lead a delegation to Yad Vashem
in Jerusalem following the suspension of Ken

asked his deputy Tom Watson or party General Secretary Ian McNicol to look at making
the trip on my behalf because of diary commitments in the immediate future.
Corbyn did, however, pledge to visit Israel

An estimated 30,000 people from

more than 100 Jewish communities across the country helped make
last weekends ShabbatUK the biggest yet. Synagogues, schools and
communtiy centres held an array of
innovative events, including communal challah-makes which saw
12,000 people across 85 sites use a
total of 18,000kg of flour to bake the
traditional bread.
The official Shabbat UK bus also
spread the restful spirit, covering
almost 2,000 miles on a tour of 40
UK communities.
One of the largest events saw
1,500 primary school children
attended and perform at a concert
at Lee Valley, run by Rabbi Marc
Levene and Rabbi Gary Bazak.
On the day itself, Shabbat
morning services were followed by
special dinners in synagogues and
Havdalah services. This years event
included the Great Friday Night
Light, with participants lighting

A deep phenomenon lies behind the

momentum created by ShabbatUK.
As a national coordinator for Chief
Rabbi Mirvis initiative for two years,
I witnessed communities coming
together over Shabbat with a passion
that has rarely been seen before. Not
only here, but across international
parallel projects.
Many Jews in Britain do not
consider themselves Shabbat observant. But they arent non-Shabbat
observant either.
So many of us keep something
of Shabbat a Friday night meal,
Shabbat candles, or mark it in some
other special way.
To many young Jews their
parents habits appear contradictory. Often a word like hypocritical
is used. But I believe they are
something far more profound and
beautiful.
When Polish and Russian Jews
migrated to UK shores 100 years
ago, they faced a frightening choice.

Not to work on Saturday meant
being unemployed by Monday.
To feed your family often meant
giving up Shabbat day. But our
great-grandparents didnt give up
on our heritage. If they could not
keep Shabbat day, they could still do
Friday night. It was sacred.
The beauty of Shabbat would still
glow for as long as it could.
The result is many of us have
inherited an almost nocturnal
religion. Seder nights, Chanukah
candles and Friday nights survived
in us.
But I believe something else
came with it the passion of our
great-grandparents. And it lay
dormant until now.
ShabbatUK seems to have
unlocked a sleeping spirit within
us. When released, we create a
communal vibrance and energy we
never knew we had.
I believe our secret latent energy
isnt a just a whisper from 100 years
ago, but is likely the making of
millennia, and may well contain the
secret to ignite our communities.

Mirvis: Donald
Trump is racist

The Chief Rabbi has branded the

American president-elect racist.
Ephraim Mirvis (pictured,
right) said he was nervous
about Donald Trump assuming
power, but hoped he would display a change of character when he
moved into the White House after
his inauguration in January.
Im nervous. Im concerned. It
is so sad to reflect on the fact that
the next president of the United
States is a man who, unfortunately,
is a racist, he told BBC 5 Live.
He is someone who has deeply
offended many people. However,
Trump as president, hopefully, will
be a different character.
Mirvis also called for former
London mayor Ken Livingstone to
be expelled from the Labour Party
after he was suspended in April,
having argued that Hitler had sup-
ported Zionism in the early 1930s.

Asked if Livingstone should be
thrown out of the party, Mirvis
said: I think he should.
The Chief Rabbi called on
Labour to bring in the recommendations of the controversial
inquiry into anti-Semitism in the
party conducted by former Liberty
chief Shami Chakrabarti shortly
before she was recommended for a
peerage by Jeremy Corbyn.
The Labour Party will hopefully be implementing the recommendations of the Chakrabarti
report. Ill be surprised if he (Livingstone) wont be expelled on the
basis of what they have written
about what the considerations they
will be taking into mind, he said.
We are still waiting for implementation of some of the aspects
of the Chakrabarti report. And
we are still waiting to see genuine

evidence that the Labour Party
leadership is taking anti-Semitism
seriously.
Within the Labour Party currently, it is not being tackled sufficiently, and were waiting to see
what the leadership is going to
be doing, and unfortunately were
waiting and waiting.
This is still on the boil. It is still
a very serious matter and we would
like to see the issue being dealt with
very effectively.

Trump strategist accused

of links with anti-Semites
Donald Trump set himself on a collision
course with many Jewish organisations this
week, after appointing a right-wing media
editor to a top job.
Steve Bannon (pictured below), who
has led Breitbart News for many years,
ran Trumps campaign since August and
was rewarded last weekend when he was
named as chief strategist to the president
when Trump takes office in January.
Among the organisations strongly
opposed to the appointment was the
Anti-Defamation
League (ADL),
whose chief
executive
Jonathan
Greenblatt
said Bannon
was hostile to
core American
values.
He added:
It is a

In his first long statement about Israel since
winning the US presidential election, Donald
Trump called the Jewish state a beacon of
hope and vowed to help it make peace with the
Palestinians without imposing solutions.
Trump made the statement to Israel Hayom,
an Israeli daily owned by Sheldon Adelson, a
Jewish casino tycoon who donated significant
funds to the Republican candidates campaign. It
published the interview with Trump on Friday.
Israel and America share so many of
the same values, such as freedom of speech,
freedom of worship and the importance

Breitbart bosses have previously had to
defend a headline comparing conservative
commentator Bill Kristol to a renegade
Jew, and Bannons ex-wife has alleged that
he made anti-Semitic comments, but the

agreements and expanding its settlements in the
West Bank, as well as in eastern Jerusalem.
Trump: Settlements no obstacle

The American president-elect does not view
Jewish settlements as an obstacle to peace, his
top adviser on Israel insists.
I think he would show Gaza as proof of
that, Jason Greenblatt said in an interview
with Army Radio, referring to the fact that all
Jewish settlements were unilaterally withdrawn from Gaza in 2005.
The two sides are going to have to
decide how to deal with that region, but
it is certainly not Donald Trumps view
that settlement activity should be condemned because it is not the obstacle to
peace, said Greenblatt, who is an executive vice president and chief legal officer of

US embassy to Jerusalem, as three successive presidents have failed to do despite a law
passed in 1995, Greenblatt called Trump different for Israel than any recent president has

that covers politics and society from

court has heard.
Gardener Thomas Mair, 53, is
charged with killing Cox, 41, on
16 June. In May, the prosecutor said,

A Jewish American professor known
for his strident criticism of Israel

debate this week, claiming the host
Henry Jackson Society founder Alan
Mendoza was a moron.
Professor Norman Finkelstein
was debating with Rabbi Ken Spiro
on whether Israel is held to double
standards on London-based YouTube channel J-TV, with both historians patched in to the debate on
video calls.
The discussion began with Spiro
arguing there were more United
Nations resolutions condemning
Israel than every other country in
the world combined, but Finkelstein
said: It would be useful if Israel
were held to any standard.
He added: The reason there are
so many resolutions condemning
Israel is because Israel simply
ignores them. If it had stopped
expanding settlements in 1967, there
wouldnt be a deluge of resolutions
condemning settlement expansion.
Finkelstein then accused Spiro of
reading from an Israeli propaganda
sheet, before Mendoza asked Finkelstein to keep his answers concise,
prompting Finkelstein to say: If you
want to just chat, cut me off.

Schools in demand

Orthodox institutions across the country,
meaning Charedi students now make up the
clear majority of all UK Jewish schoolchildren.
Almost all strictly-Orthodox schools are run
independent of state funding, and an estimated
1,400 Orthodox boys aged 11 to 15 are being
educated in yeshivot [religious seminaries],
according to the report. These students also fall
outside government census data.
Authors Daniel Staetsky and Jonathan Boyd
said that while strictly-Orthodox children universally attend Jewish schools, only 43 percent
of Jewish children from the mainstream Jewish
community do, and that Jewish pupil enrolment
in mainstream Jewish schools outside London
has declined by a quarter over the past 20 years.
The findings will have policy implications.
More schools and more pupils mean that
more teachers need to be recruited, trained and

tackling mental health issues
at the charitys Redbridge
Sports Dinner.
Following his 14-year
boxing career, the 54-year-old,
who held both the WBC and
European heavyweight titles,
has faced his own issues and
is now a mental health campaigner, raising awareness to
educate and break the stigma
around the subject.
He told guests: I want to
give people inspiration to talk
about how they are feeling.
Theres a lot of people out there
in pain, feeling down, having
no energy to do anything at all.
But when you come out
and explain how youre feeling,
you find theres a lot of other
people out there trying not to
talk about it, too, like Michael
who we saw in the film Jewish
Care showed us tonight. You
need to talk and get it off your
shoulders.
He added: Now everyone
knows this can happen to any
one of their family and friends

aunt, your brother, and it could
be you.

Deputy mayor will

build faith bridges
Londons deputy mayor tasked with engaging with faith communities has set his sights on expanding interfaith dialogue
and insisted it is appalling that anti-Semitism is a daily concern for members of the community, writes Justin Cohen.
Human rights lawyer Matthew Ryder, who was appointed to
the new role two months ago, said dialogue was a key ingredient of social integration in the capital.
Examples of Jewish and Muslim leaders coming together
and emphasising commonalities is an example to the rest of
the world, he claimed.
Ryder was speaking as City Hall hosted mayors from around
Europe at its first social integration conference on Monday,
which coincided with the start of the national Inter Faith Week.
In his first interview with the Jewish media since taking on
the role, the Queens Counsel, who grew up in Golders Green,
said the ideals of social justice that mean so much to him have
long been promoted by Jewish groups.
He has already held talks with Chief Rabbi Ephraim
Mirvis and looked forward to engaging with the many other
groups who have made contact to discuss issues from volunteering which also comes under his portfolio to tackling antiSemitism.
Its really important for us to ensure that what seems to be
anti-Semitism being given greater voice gets dealt with robustly
and I completely endorse the approach Sadiq has taken. Its
really important for us see anti-Semitism as an aspect of racism
in its most heinous form and also look at it more closely for the

Yavneh parents upset at shul

Angry parents at Yavneh College are

demanding an apology from the chairman
of Radlett United Synagogue, after reports
he complained that badly-behaved
children from the Jewish school caused
850 of damage to the shul toilets.
The parents Facebook site was deluged
with comments aimed at Radlett chair Alex
Pomerance, who was reported to have told
congregants that the actions of the four girls
involved reflected badly on the school, their
families and the teenagers themselves.
Pomerance has previously written
to schools about the behaviour of their
pupils in shul, including Yavneh, JCoSS,
JFS and Immanuel. This week he said he
did identify the girls as Yavneh pupils but
denied he embarrassed anyone, or said that
the girls behaviour was in any way a poor
reflection on the school.
He also hit out at the reporting of the
incident, which he said had destroyed
months and years of consideration, hard
work and planning and which would
encourage members to turn away from
Judaism instead of embracing it.
Pomerance has previously reported
disruptive behaviour from Yavneh boys
who chatter and laugh throughout the
service, move around the shul, climb over
chairs and do not respond to requests for
silence or respect.

who are struggling to conceive has said its Tea-cember
fundraising campaign next
month should help others
understand the difficulties
infertility can cause.
Chanas initiative follows
National Infertility Awareness Week earlier this month,
in which public figures shared
their own stories in the hope
of breaking long-standing
stigmas.
Now in its fifth year,
organisers said Tea-cember
started off as a nice social
idea, to gather friends for a
tea party in someones home,
but that it had seen huge
growth, after an outpouring
of public and communal
support.
Last year, more than
2,500 people took part in
133 events, raising 53,000 for
the charity, bosses of which
said one in six Jewish couples
face problems, commensurate
with the national average.
The money raised last year
Yavneh headteacher Spencer Lewis,

Pomerance added: I doubt if these kids
would behave this way in a church or a
mosque. Why do they think they can do it
in synagogue?
Lewis defended his pupils, saying: Our
pupils are a credit to Yavneh and the flood
of letters, phone calls, emails and social
media posts we have had, particularly in
the last week, are testament to that. I am
extremely proud of the way they behave,
both in lessons and outside of school.
Parents and supporters also hit back,
with one mother writing: I was in shul that
day and I know the real story At the end
of the service the rabbi still complemented
the Yavneh kids on their good behaviour.

Another mother said Yavneh pupils
were being singled out. My husband is a
regular shul-goer and this is his shul. He
says there are plenty of very badly-behaved
children from the fee paying sector also.
One father said that outside Yavneh, the
children were not its responsibility, asking:

Kantor King Solomon High School was in a
celebratory mood last Wednesday night as it
welcomed Dr Moshe Kantor to a renaming ceremony held in his honour, writes Alex Davis.
Dr Kantor, president of the European Jewish
Congress since 2007, has supported the voluntaryaided Jewish comprehensive school which provides places for all faiths for the past two years
with generous financial donations.
The funds have enabled the Ilford school
to make significant improvements, including
expanding its Jewish studies department and providing every sixth form student with a laptop.
Among the 200-strong audience were the
Israeli Ambassador to the UK Mark Regev, Chief
Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, Board of Deputies president Jonathan Arkush and former special envoy to
the Middle East Lord Michael Levy.

rabbis and community leaders to include
Transgender Day of Remembrance observance in this weeks Shabbat services.
Surat-Shaan Knan, founder of Liberal
Judaisms project Twilight People, said
the national day, on 20 November, was a
day to memorialise those who have been
murdered as a result of transphobia and to
bring attention to the continued violence
endured by the transgender community.
Official statistics reveal that 271 trans
people have been reported murdered in the
past year, an increase of 20 percent, which
campaigners described as shocking.

World Jewish Relief has launched its response
to the upcoming annual shopping bonanza
Black Friday by unveiling its latest campaign,
called #LackFriday.
The agency said that whereas Black Friday
sees British shoppers splurge on new TVs and
clothes, #LackFriday will showcase powerful
images from around the world of Jewish
people who lack warm food, a warm home or
warm relationships.
Starting on Friday, it is scheduled to last
one week, until 25 November the day when
consumers across the country are set to storm
shops and retail websites in the hope of a

fined Noel Gerard 12,900 and
handed him a six-month suspended
term for incitement to hatred.
In 2014, he shared a picture on
social media of a man performing
the quenelle salute at the Ohr
Hatorah school, where a rabbi
and three children were killed.

visit due to diary issues but

Israel is embarking on a major
archaeological expedition to find
undiscovered Dead Sea Scrolls, an
Israeli antiquities official has said.
Amir Ganor, of the Israel Antiquities
Authority, said a government
research team will spend the next
three years surveying hundreds of
caves in the Judean Desert near
the Dead Sea, the arid region
where the Dead Sea Scrolls, the
worlds oldest biblical manuscripts,
were preserved for thousands of
years and discovered in 1947. The
collection is considered the crown
jewel of Israeli antiquities.

Berlins Jewish Museum and
Chabad Lubavitch have been
granted major funding from the
federal government.
Chabad will receive 1.6million from a 190million pot
in 2017 intended for cultural institutions and projects in Berlin as dedicated by
the German Bundestag.
Among the numerous beneficiaries of the fund is Jewish
Museum Berlin, which will
receive an increase of 940,000,
for a total of 5million in 2017.

Simon Rothstein profiles the remarkable shortlisted candidates
for our 2016 Jewish News-Mitzvah Day Community Hero award
Simon Cooper & Rebecca Woolfe
Simon Cooper was the epitome of a brave,

selfless individual who gave so much
despite the enormous personal challenges
he faced throughout his short life.
Simon suffered from cystic fibrosis and
was born with a blocked bowel, requiring
life-saving surgery from day one. A liver
transplant at 16 and double lung transplant at
29 didnt stop him achieving so much.
Simon was an ambassador for NHS
Blood & Transplant, raised money for
many different charities and, as a brilliant
drummer and musician,

devised the Friday Night
Rock Service service that
filled Liberal and Reform
synagogues whenever his
band played.
Even when Simon
was diagnosed with lung
cancer in January this
year, this did not stop him.
Instead, it inspired him
to step up his charitable
efforts.
Together with his sister
Rebecca Woolfe, Simon
planned to raise more
money for good causes
with the Simon says Lets Party event a
fundraising dinner and dance.
Simon died on 10 July, aged 33. Rebecca
took over the organisation and running of the
charity event on her own, despite her loss.
Dad and nominator Paul said: The event
took place in October and was a huge success,
raising more than 20,000 for the Cystic
Fibrosis Trust, MacMillan Cancer Support
and the North London Hospice. These two
were team of the year no question!
Susie Gordon
To get an idea of how much time and

effort Susie Gordon puts into her
community, you only have to look at
what shes organised for Mitzvah Day
this year.
On Sunday, 27 November, Susie will bring
synagogues, churches, mosques and schools
both faith and non-faith together for
a huge day of social action at Leeds Jewish
Free Schools Henry Cohen Campus.

tenants serving them with tea and smile,
and taking time to befriend all she meets.
Much of the rest of her week is spent
sourcing low cost, but healthy, ingredients.

around. She now bakes for all our buildings.

Debbie adds: The real reason she deserves
this award is in how she has become a friend
to many tenants, brightening up everyones
day with her happy-go-lucky manner,
making sure all are happy. That is the
greatest gift you can give.
Di is a real hero to our tenants and
staff alike, and thoroughly deserves to be
recognised as a community hero too.

Council stand advising on how to help
unaccompanied refugee children,
collections for PAFRAS (Positive Action
for Refugees and Asylum Seekers) and
Leeds North FoodBank, and a guide to
what mitzvot people can do throughout
the year.
And Susie, who is executive director
of Leeds Jewish Representative Council,
certainly practices what she preaches in
terms of helping others 365 days a year.
In her job, she has revitalised her local
community and established projects such
as the Leeds Jewish Future Programme.
In her spare time, she volunteers to
actively engage and support young people
of all faiths in their personal development
through Beavers and raises awareness of
the BRCA gene, which affects one in 40
people with Ashkenazi Jewish heritage
and can increase the risk of certain cancers.
If all thats not enough, she also
undertakes fundraising walks.
Nominator, colleague Eva Peros, said:
Susie is infectiously enthusiastic about
bringing communities together under one
roof instilling a sense of excitement
about volunteering into everyone she meets.
At first glance, a project that sells

second-hand books on Amazon doesnt
seem life-changing.
But New Chapters a social enterprise
set up by Arnold Levin has changed the
lives of Langdon volunteers with learning
disabilities, helping them to learn skills and
build confidence.
The project is fully led by 16 Langdon
volunteers, supported by abled counterparts.
It sells 16,000 books each year with a
turnover of 45,000. Its become so popular

that in the four years since Arnold set it up, it
has outgrown its premises twice.
But these facts dont provide a full
narrative of outcomes, says Arnolds
nominator Elie Levy, volunteer manager for
Langdon.
Elie says: Arnold has been exceptionally
motivational to the volunteers. He is popular,
but the true inspiration is the confidence he
gives to groups of marginalised people.

friend has done for young Jewish
adults in the UK.

Rachel has literally changed peoples
lives, enthuses Victoria. Shes helped
them find their spouses, reconnect to their
heritage and, at the same time, raised huge
sums for charity.
Rachel had done this all through her
pioneering Jfriends a charity promoting
networking, socialising and embracing
Jewish values across all affiliations
(and none).
The 34-year-old has tirelessly, and
totally voluntarily, nurtured Jfriends
development organising, managing
and subsidising a range of Jewish events,
including monthly Shabbat dinners,
European holidays and Ted-style talks
on topical Jewish issues.
These events have become so popular
that Jews from across Europe and Israel
travel to attend.
Rachel not only leads her own charity,
but shows remarkable support for other
charitable programmes, raising money and
establishing a highly successful monthly
event where Jfriends collaborates with
Club Sandwich to make and deliver
nutritious meals to the homeless.
Victoria added: Through meeting
at Jfriends events, three couples have
become engaged, including Rachel herself!
She is an incredible inspiration and,
without her, the lives of many hundreds
of people would be significantly poorer
in all senses.

Whether it was working with lawyers and
Citizens UK to identify those children with
a legal right to come from France to Britain,
lobbying the countries governments to
speed up the process or uniting with leaders
of all faiths to increase that pressure there
are families now united in the UK directly
thanks to the work of Janet.
And when the unaccompanied children
arrived in Britain, she was there to welcome
to them and help them settle in even going
as far as to throw birthday parties.

fulfilling the obligations of the Torah
makes Janet very special.
But its through getting to know them
and their families, helping tell their stories

There arent many people who can say

theyve spent more than six decades
working tirelessly for the Jewish
community. But 82-year-old Harold
Newman is one of them.
Whether it was campaigning for Soviet
Jewry and against Holocaust denial, running
multiple marathons for Jewish charities or
serving as chair of the Association of Jewish
Ex-Serviceman, Harold has done it all.
And he is going strong at 82, still undertaking
sponsored events on his specially-adapted
Harley Davidson (now with an extra wheel)
and serving the community as the chair of both

the Jewish Branch of the Royal Legion and the
Jewish Association of Cultural Societies (JACS).
Sara Conway, who nominated her stepfather
as a Community Hero, said: He is an
inspiration. I still remember how surprised I
was, as a student, to be on the same protest rally
as him against Holocaust revisionism. Now,
here we are 25 years later, and his energy and
commitment to representing and supporting his
community are just as impressive.
Harold is a true legend and a real example to
us all of what is possible, whatever our age.

Weve received almost 350 nominations for this years Jewish Schools
Awards our joint initiative with Partnerships for Jewish Schools
(PaJeS). It includes 158 votes alone for best emerging teacher in the
past three years, while more than 60 names have been submitted for
best special needs teacher, best assistant or deputy head and best
Modern Hebrew teacher.
These honours cover both primary and secondary education, with
seven awards to be handed out in total.
Februarys glittering ceremony at JW3 will be a joyous opportunity
to again recognise the exceptional efforts of the teachers and other
staff who make our communitys schools the best in the country. No
wonder theres now a record number of pupils studying in them. As
PaJeS head Rabbi David Meyer says: It is thanks to their dedication
that our schools are effectively educating the next generation.

BUFFOON WAS
THE LEAST BAD
BRUNOS SO FRANK
A national champion, loved by the people, suffers a dramatic fall from
grace and is sectioned under the Mental Health Act, in full view of the
worlds press. That was Frank Brunos life in September 2003. What a
journey he has been on since.
This week it was a pleasure to hear him speak candidly to the Jewish
community at the Jewish Care Sports Dinner, inspiring all who struggle
with mental health issues. It reminds us that our historic focus on
academic and professional achievement means that there is still a
tendency to turn a blind eye to someones breakdown or disorder.
Lets finally be rid of this outdated cultural relic and tackle mental
health head-on.
Looking at the result of the US presidential

election as an outsider, the Amercian
electorate was given a terrible choice between a buffoon and a crook.
So, for voters, the least bad option must
be the former.
The email controversy showed Hillary
Clinton was, at the very least, imprudent
and the funding of her charitable foundation raised questions of the possibility of
having sold influence.
The way the Democrats conducted a
smear campaign was enough to put
anyone off, but their claim that Trump was

Last Wednesday I woke up in a cold sweat having

dreamed I had just watched Comrade Corbyn, flanked
by the gormless, grinning hypocrite Diane Abbott and
oily, obnoxious Ken Livingstone, giving an acceptance
speech as our new prime minister!
Panic over. But then I turned on the TV and saw that Donald Trump had been elected president of the United States.
The same Mr Trump who all the experienced political commentators insisted would never win his partys
nomination, then insisted he was a joke and had no
chance of winning the election.
Every time he opened his mouth, he insulted or alienated a large section of the US population. Even the bad
publicity regarding his treatment and comments about
women didnt make any difference.
God forbid my dream becomes reality (after the
result of the US election, stranger things have now
clearly happened).

You are so misguided

over Trumps election
After reading your front page
article last week entitled Heaven
help US! I thought I had picked
up The Guardian in error (Jewish
News, 10 November).
Your misguided writer attacked
Donald Trump over, it seems to
read, his promise to support Israel
a new policy to replace Obamas
denigration of our spiritual
homeland and its prime minister.
Let me remind your wrongheaded columnist that the
Clinton Foundation has allegedly
received donations from Arab
regimes that also allegedly
contributed to her election fund.
Obviously these monies were
given in the hope that she would
continue to undermine Israels
defence policy and force a
two-state solution favouring the
Palestinians.
Trump will, I am sure, help to
fight the resurgence of antiSemitism encouraged by the

right of Jews to live there,

As Jews we should all
seek to speak and act to

Israel, and avoid providing
ammunition for those who
seek to deligitimise her.
Not every Jew wants to
live in Israel, but Israel can
live in every Jew.

plumogranates? Ive tried all the local supermarkets the large and small
branches of Waitrose, Sainsburys, Tesco and two independent greengrocers.
When I ask for plumogranates, they all
offered me pomegranates! I have made
recipes with plums and they were delicious,

Board should leave shooting

from the lip to Donald Trump

ve seen nations rise and fall. Ive heard

their stories, heard them all. But loves
the only engine of survival. Farewell,
Leonard Cohen.
Nice tribute, huh, quoting from The
Future, by LC himself? And where, of all
places, does the tribute come from?
Why, none other than the Board of Deputies. Thats right, the Board, the elected
representative body of British Jewry, which
tweeted this lyric as part of the outpouring of
tributes in response to the veteran singersongwriters death last week.
I couldnt decide whether to laugh or cry
when I read this tweet. I tried hard to visualise
some of the more venerable deputies getting
down with the kids as the Board clambered
on to the Cohen tributes bandwagon, seeking,
perhaps, to proclaim its street cred.
It was fair enough for Israels President
Reuven Rivlin and yes, though Im no fan of

his, Bibi Netanyahu to issue warm statements
after Leonard Cohens death. Cohen regarded
himself as a son of Israel, toured the country
during the Yom Kippur War with Ariel Sharon
at his side, and came back for a last triumphant
concert in 2009 in Tel Aviv, with the words of his
songs sung with avid devotion by a rapt crowd,
many of them in uniform.
So, well done, Ruby and Bibi for saying the
right things. Made a pleasant change in among
all the warmongering rhetoric we hear too
often. But the Board? Forgive me, but exactly
what dog does the Board have in this fight?
Then I read about the row relating to the
decision of the president of the Board, Jonathan Arkush, to congratulate Donald Trump
on securing the American presidency.
Anodyne as Arkushs statement may have
been I would like to congratulate Donald
Trump on his victory. After a divisive campaign,
I hope that Mr Trump will move to build bridges
and ensure that Americas standing as a beacon
of progress, tolerance and free thinking remains
strong there is certainly scope for wondering

what on earth he was thinking.
Quite apart from Trumps hate-filled,
venomous racism during his divisive
campaign, a worrying amount of which was
levelled at Jews, what on earth is the Board of
Deputies doing when it sends out statements on
world developments over which it cannot have
the slightest influence?
Pleasingly, there was an immediate response
from deputies themselves. I dont think its
the Board of Deputies job to congratulate
Donald Trump on his election, and Im sure the
Jewish community will agree with me, tweeted
deputy Tal Ofer. Deputy Ella Rose, a former
student leader and one of almost 200 people
who complained bitterly to Arkush, wrote: No

words for how badly this statement is judged.
Im embarrassed to be a deputy.
Probably Rose will get over her embarrassment and Arkush may well reflect for several
more moments before issuing another statement where the Board has no direct relevance.
Leave shooting from the lip to Trump, is my
advice.
These latest outpourings felt somewhat
like being trapped on a moving vehicle with
someone who has seized the microphone and
insists on making interminable pronouncements as the world goes by.
In other words, just because you can, doesnt
mean you should.

American isolationism will be

bad for Israel and the world

ast week Donald Trump won the

American presidency after one of
the most bitterly-fought and divisive
campaigns in living memory. His
blunt style and populist rhetoric, which
included pejorative references to Muslims,
Mexicans and women, have rightly
received censure from many quarters.
There were justified accusations that he
did little to disavow support from nationalist and anti-Semitic groups.
With these concerns in mind, many are
asking how Trump will view Israel and the
wider problems in the Middle East. This is hard
to answer, in part because he has shifted his
position on many issues and lacks political or
military experience to fall back on. Nonetheless,
he has made a number of policy pledges that
may give some indication of his thinking.
At a speech to the American Israel Public
Affairs Committeein March, he declared
that a Trump administration would shift the
American embassy in Israel to Jerusalem,
having previously declined to make any such
commitment in the primaries.
David Friedman, Trumps Middle East policy
advisor, has said that there is every intention

to keep the pledge. However, such presidential
promises are as common as the failure to fulfil
them, as Israeli governments know very well.
Trump also described the Iranian nuclear
accord, signed last year, as the worst deal
ever negotiated but flipped between calling
for its renegotiation and annulment. One of
his advisors, Walid Phares, has said that the
president is more likely to review it, send
it to Congress, demand from the Iranians to
restore a few issues or change a few issues.
This is more feasible than dismantling it,
if only because the latter option would trigger
a major diplomatic spat with Americas allies,
including Russia. The Israelis would surely
welcome a suitable revision, however.
There have been warm overtures towards
Jerusalem, too. In his first interview since
winning the election, Trump offered a paean to
Israel, describing it as the one true democracy
and defender of human rights in the Middle East
and a beacon of hope to countless people.
He has indicated his administration could
play a significant role in helping the parties
to achieve a just, lasting peace, although one
negotiated between the parties themselves,
and not imposed on them. This may suggest a
less interventionist role than that pursued by
Obama, although Trump was short on policy

detail. Given the PAs refusal to negotiate with
Jerusalem, and the threat of Hamas, there is
unlikely to be significant shift on the ground.
There is one other important difference in
approach suggested by Jason Greenblatt, one
of Trumps top advisors. Greenblatt said it was
certainly not Mr Trumps view that settlement activity should be condemned and that
it is an obstacle to peace. This marks a major
break with Obama for whom settlement
restriction was of considerable importance.
But while there are some reasons to think
Trump might be good for Israel, there are also
warning signs. His America first approach
and his warmth towards President Putin have
unnerved key allies around the world. In July, he
suggested that in the event of a Russian attack
on the Baltic states in NATO, American support
would be conditional on whether they have
fulfilled their obligations to us.
Unravelling American internationalism is

dangerous, given that the US has long been a
lynchpin of global security. Some have asked
whether the refusal to automatically endorse
alliance commitments will extend to Israel, too.
Trumps stated willingness to defeat ISIS will
synchronise with Israeli interests. But he has
signalled that he will back Assad and Moscow
in defeating the jihadists, suggesting a more
isolationist policy . This is bad news for Israel
for it would mean giving Assads allies, Iran and
Hezbollah, free rein in the country. The arc of
Shia terror extending from Tehran to Beirut is
arguably a greater threat to Israel than ISIS.
Of course, events in the Middle East often
trigger unexpected shifts in policy, as President
Bush Jr discovered in 2001. Moreover, Trump
is in many ways an unpredictable political actor.
Overall, there are enough reasons for Israel, and
other US allies, to look cautiously at the White
House next January.

Donald Trump is not one

t may come as little surprise that I

was delighted by the American election result. Like the Brexit decision,
Donald Trumps victory was a breath of
fresh air a welcome diversion from the
stagnant appeasement mode of the Obama
Administration.
Fellow Jews are entitled to take a different
view. Judging by reactions from the community both here and in the US since the election,
it is clear that many do.
Those who believe Hilary Clinton would
have been a better choice are free to wallow in
their disappointment. But those sentiments
are now irrelevant. Trump has won. Like it or
not, barring some unforseeable circumstance,
from January he will be the most powerful
individual in the western world for the next
four years.
What Jewish people should not be doing,
especially in the media, is lambasting Trump
now he has won in some of the intemperate
terms we have seen. There has been a huge
amount of journalistic rabble-rousing against
him, which is every bit as wild and irrespon-
sible as the provocative comments for which

Trump has been criticised.
To lead , as this newspaper did last week,
with expressions such as shock and horror
at the result, the emotional maturity of
a 12-year old and the often-vile personality in reference to the president-elect, is
completely over-the-top.
Even worse was the language employed by
another Jewish newspaper whose editorial
claimed as a matter of fact that Trump is a
racist misogynist bully, that his campaign
was self-consciously anti-Semitic (whatever
that is supposed to mean), that he is a threat
to world freedom and other scaremongering
termonology more appropriate to the description of a neo-Nazi.
People in our community who spout
this outrageous rhetoric are allowing their
personal objection to Trumps swashbuckling demeanour, or perhaps their own
out-moded left-wing bias, to obstruct their
political vision from a Jewish perspective.
They are pursuing a kind of death-wish,
desperately looking for hostility when it isnt
there. They are the pathetic personification of
the old joke that if anti-Semitism did not exist,
Jews would have had to invent it.
Let me remind those critics of a few facts.
Trump is an ardent supporter of Israel. He

is opposed to the two-state solution, which
would be the first step to Israels destruction.
He is utterly opposed to Islamic extremism
now the greatest threat to democracy
and international peace. He is committed
to fighting all terrorism equally, be it ISIS,
Hamas or Hezbollah. He has condemned
the infamous nuclear deal with Iran. He has
pledged to move the US embassy to Jerusalem.
It doesnt stop there. Trumps daughter
and son-in-law are observant Jews. He himself
is a believer in religious freedom, which ought
to bode well for Jewish education, community security, protection of shechita and brit
milah.
His vice president-elect, Mike Pence, has
been described in the Israeli press as one
of the best friends the State of Israel and the
Jewish people ever had.

Like all politicians , Trump and indeed
Pence once in power, could change their
stance and find excuses to renege on their
commitments. But they should be given every
encouragement to deliver, not have mud slung
at them right at the start from within our
community.
We Jews have many real enemies out
there, working overtime to try and cause us
harm. Not just in the Middle East , but elsewhere too, in the likes of Chavez, Erdogan, Le
Pen, Corbyn et al. These individuals are far
more worthy candidates for our opprobrium.
To do so against Trump is a manifestation of gross ingratitude, to say the least, and
potentially self-defeating.
Would we like to give the next president
reason to say: If thats what the Jews think of
me, why should I bother to support them?

chief strategist, an anti-Semite? It
seems unlikely. Yes, he may have been
chief executive of Breitbart, the angry
right-wing news website whose comment
section is frequently clogged up by white kids
blathering on about Jewish control.
Yes, he may be an inspiration to the alt-right
that somewhat frazzled group of online
agitators who hate political correctness, think
feminism is the reason they cant get a job or a
girlfriend and are convinced that some powerful
force is running, and ruining, their lives.
Probably the Jews.
But Bannon cannot be held responsible for
what his readers or followers think. As Alan
Dershowitz said this week, yes there has been
carelessness at Breitbart under Bannon,
such as when one of its writers described a
conservative Republican as a renegade Jew.

But I havent seen any evidence of
personal anti-Semitism on the part of
Bannon, said Dershowitz. And we have to
be very careful before we accuse [someone] of
being an anti-Semite.
Hes right. If we over-use the term antiSemite, we risk making people even more
sceptical of this prejudice. And God knows
theres already too much doubt about the extent
and seriousness of anti-Semitism today.
But theres no doubt that the Trump
phenomenon, the rise of this self-consciously
un-PC loudmouth, has tapped into, or revealed,
the lingering anti-Semitism of the right.
On some fringes of the alt-right, a mostly
web-based movement that thinks old
conservatives have sold out and must be
replaced by a white-nationalist outlook, there
is a weird fear of Jews. Some alt-right activists
openly talk about creating a whiter America,
free of black culture and Jewish power.
The Daily Beast recently reported that
alt-right activists dont see Jews as whites. Its
all a disturbing reminder that anti-Semitism

is as pronounced in the angry right as it is in
sections of the edgy left.
And heres the thing for all the radical lefts
raging against the alt-right, it actually shares
something in common with it: a conviction that
something Jewish, something Israel-related,
wields terrifying influence over Western politics
and our lives. The alt-right and what we might
call the alt-left might like screaming at each
other. But they have a common discomfort with
Jewish influence. The alt-right is more open,
explicitly bemoaning Jewish control, while rad
lefties prefer to speak of a sinister Israel Lobby
puppeteering our politics, or of a Zionist-led
media, in the words of NUS president Malia
Bouattia. But both seem driven by a sense of

siege, by a conviction that they are threatened by
awesome, scary forces.
The alt-right and alt-left are weird mirror
versions of each other, different expressions of
the same sad politics of overblown victimhood
and even conspiracy theorising. This tells us
something important about what drives antiSemitism today. It isnt the old politics of race;
its the new politics of identity.
When people are encouraged to see
themselves as a fragile identity under attack a
white guy in a multicultural world, a Muslim in
the wicked West, a woman in a patriarchal world
the more they will come to see themselves as
permanent victims of external forces.

Hes still bard to the bone

Just shy of his 90th birthday, playwright and
novelist Bernard Kops has published a new
book of poetry, writes Fiona Leckerman
he great thing about being an artist is

that you can continue working until
you drop down dead, says Bernard
Kops.
The ever-energetic poet, playwright and
novelist turns 90 this month and shows no signs
of slowing down a new book of poetry is set for
publication next year, while a new documentary
about his life and work will be shown at the
Jewish Museum in celebration of his milestone.
East End-born Kops has spent his life
dedicated to two things his writing, which
includes more than 40 plays for television, stage and radio, nine novels and two
autobiographies and his wife of 62 years,

Erica, who joins us at their basement flat in
Canfield Gardens, West Hampstead.
Kops can still be found writing away at his
desk every morning, where he also wrote the
play that launched him to recognition, The
Hamlet of Stepney Green, which inspired the
title of Jill Campbells documentary.
The Hamlet of Canfield Gardens combines
vrit footage with traditional Jewish songs
and Kops poetry, providing a whimsical view
into the psyche of this prolific writer.
With four children, six grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren, Kops admits he and his
wife enjoy lives that are never quiet or dull.

He explains: Ive been so busy and Ive
survived and in a sense we dont live a quiet life.
There is a great temptation to sit on the settee
and have a shluf, but in fact it just brings your old
age closer, so we walk a lot. I always say walking
and working are the two main factors.
The couple are joined by their cat and their
home is filled with their son Adams sculptures,
family photos adorn the walls and then, set apart
on a mezzanine is Bernards desk, papers in neat
piles and posters on the walls with a clear view
of their garden. He continues to find inspiration
more and more intertwined with Jewish themes.
The poems come to me, I dont go to them.
I see something happening and the poem immediately comes out. I sometimes cry as Im writing
a poem. I feel tears coming into my eyes, maybe
the years of life have drowned me.
But Erica wryly interjects: Youre not an
unhappy man, thats the whole irony.
Kops, whose parents were Dutch-Jewish
immigrants attributes his longevity to a mixture
of genetics and luck. He was brought up in
Stepney Green, along with his seven siblings and
parents, all of whom followed traditional careers
as machinists or tailors, but the budding writer
knew from an early age that he was different.
Im luckily very strong, which is a strange
thing because we were starving as kids. We
lived on vegetable soups it was pea soup that
kept us alive. All my sisters and brothers have
lived and are living well into their 90s.
But he says his relationship with his siblings
was at times strained: My brothers told me that
I should be ashamed of myself for not holding
down a job and they thought I was useless, but I
was driven by something different.
With the Second World War came evacuation and, never one to conform, Kops escaped
from the safety of the countryside, near
Uxbridge, where he and his younger sister had
been sent and journeyed home, arriving in
the middle of the Blitz. He lied to his shocked
parents that his school had been bombed and
despite being just 13, they believed him.
THE POEMS COME

TO ME, I DONT GO TO
THEM. I SOMETIMES CRY
AS IM WRITING THEM
A brief stint as an actor followed and as a selfproclaimed bohemian he later frequented Soho,
where he wrote and fell heavily into drugs.
Soho became my home of joy and freedom.
I needed otherness to be somewhere for my
writing where I could be free of all the things
that were going on in the world.
It wasnt until he had a breakdown and met
Erica that he was able to stop his habit. He says:
Erica gave me something definite. She is my
discrete side, shes educated and intellectual.
The Kops ran a small second-hand book
stall off Cambridge Circus, where he wrote his
first novel, which Leonard, husband of author
Virginia Woolf wanted to publish, but Kops
refused (I cared only about writing, being
with Erica and having a family).
The writing never ceased. He wrote plays,
including the theatrically ground-breaking, The
Hamlet of Stepney Green (1957) and Enter Solly
Gold (1962), all the while avidly writing poetry.
As our time comes to an end, Kops notices
a flower blossoming in his garden and beckons
Erica to witness it. A tear wells in his eye and
one wonders what inspiration this moment has
stirred in a man who will perhaps never cease to
express beauty through words.
Kops will read poetry and a screening
of The Hamlet of Canfield Gardens will be
shown on Sunday, 27 November, 4.30pm to
6.15pm at Jewish Museum. Details:

David to the Rescue

David Miliband, head of the International Rescue Committee, talks to Justin Cohen about
the refugee crisis and what, if anything, might bring him back to UK politics
ince David Miliband moved

to New York, barely a month
has gone by without speculation over his next move. From
the stories of former parliamentary
colleagues urging him to return to
Westminster in the Batley and Spen
by-election and his criticism of
unelectable Jeremy Corbyn during
the Labour leadership contest, to
suggestions he could have been in line
for a top job in Hillary Clintons team
had she won the White House, theres
been no end of conjecture.
While he refuses to rule out a return
before 2020, the former foreign secretary,
who could now have been in Downing Street
had he not lost the 2010 Labour contest, has
spent the past three years on the front line of
a global emergency, the significance of which
has occupied governments worldwide.
Last year, 65 million people were
displaced through conflict, and the International Rescue Committee (IRC), of which
he is head, helped provide 23million people
to access vital education, training and
healthcare across four continents. The IRC
helped settle nearly 10,000 refugees in the
US last year.
In an exclusive interview with Jewish
News ahead of an appearance tonight at
JW3 as part of the Alan Howard Foundation
series, Miliband, whose parents both fled the
Nazis, said the global system is failing in a
fundamental way.
Sixty-five million people displaced by
conflict in 2015 is a record. The length of
displacement is growing, so fewer than one
percent of refugees went home last year.
And the conditions I see are really appalling.
Theres a growing mismatch between
the scale of the need and the adequacy of
provision. That is happening at a time when
theres been a rise in some toxic politics
when it comes to the treatment of refugees,
who are victims of terror and not terrorists
and are sometimes treated in a dehumanised way, he explained.
It was a mixture of the personal being

able to help people the same way other
people helped my parents nearly 80 years
ago and the worsening crisis that led to
him to apply to the New York-based charity.
He is under no illusion that this is a crisis
that will be talked about in the past tense
while he is still in the job and insisted the
world should be planning on the assumption
refugee numbers will continue to rise.
There are still 17m people inside Syria
and theres no sign of the war coming to an
end. The long-term conflict in Afghanistan,
Somalia and Congo roll on.
He suggested Britains contribution amid
the refugee crisis was half good and half not
so good with the Department for International Development one of the highest
financial contributors to aid in terms of
the scale of the British aid budget and the
quality of the spend.
However, he added: When it comes
to welcoming or admitting refugees, then
the British numbers are very low. Even in
respect of unaccompanied children, theres
been quite a high degree of inertia. The
commitment from the Cameron and May
governments equates to six refugees per
parliamentary constituency and no one
can persuade me that is going to overwhelm
a constituency.
On the day the government agreed to
publish a new strategy on unaccompanied
minors following pressure from former
Kindertransport refugee Lord Dubs, Miliband said the IRCs calculations suggested
an intake of 20,000 would be an appropriate
British share of the global responsibility.
Remember, he said, the vast bulk of
refugees 85 percent plus are in poorer
countries. The rich parts of the world take a
very small fraction.
He has high praise for the response to
the crisis by the Jewish community record
funds were raised through an appeal by
World Jewish Relief and practical support
from synagogues and particularly for
Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, whose visit
to a refugee camp in Greece he described as

significant.
All communities have a responsibility
to defend ideals of humanity and fellowship when theyre under strain. The work
of Rescue is also to defend ideals of social
justice that are tragically under assault,
including in Europe. The rise of racist and
anti-Semitic attacks, the rise of far-right
parties shows the work of Rescue is about
defending our own value base as well as
providing material rescue to people far away.
Saying he is proud to have established
real scale and presence in the Syria region
and to have defied legal cases in the US to
continue settling refugees there, he added:
We feel a special responsibility to develop
the most appropriate interventions for
displaced people in health, education,
employment, child protection and
womens protection.
But I would never claim
Im going to solve the worlds
problems in this job partly
because of the long-term
trends that are driving the
current levels of displacement. We are dealing with
the symptoms of failed
politics and theres plenty
of that around.
Asked if he would
consider a return to the UK
before the next election,
he said: The job Im doing
is taking my energy and
Im learning, Im having an
impact, thats the test.
I ask if anything had
tempted him to return.
I care a lot about Britain.
Labour has an historic role in
taking Britain forward.
One has to lead ones life
in a way that doesnt have
potential question marks
over ones head, so Im
getting on with my job.
Labour anti-Semitism horrifying

DAVID MILIBAND has said it was horrifying to see the
words anti-Semitism and Labour in the same sentence
in his first direct comments since the party was engulfed
in a row over the scourge.
A number of councillors and members have been
suspended or expelled by Labour in the past six months with
the leader launching an inquiry into anti-Semitism and racism.
Asked what he made of Jeremy Corbyns response to the
issue, the former foreign secretary told Jewish News: I never
thought Id see the day when the words Labour and anti-Semitism were in the same sentence and clearly they have been in
the same sentence many times in the last year. Its imperative
to fight back against that with every sinew.
Labour has to find a way back with all communities,
including the Jewish community. Its incumbent on

everyone at different levels to do everything they can
to make sure the great parts of Labours history in
fighting anti-Semitism are never compromised.
Miliband, who accused Corbyn of making the party
unelectable during his re-election campaign, added
that there were many who spoke up very clearly within
the Labour family and those need to be listened to.
Following criticism from the Home Affairs Select
Committee over Twitters failure to do enough to clamp

abs-olutely fabulous
Inspired by fitness coach Joe Wicks, 14-year-old
Dylan Pena lost three stone and rediscovered
his confidence, he tells Francine Wolfisz
was always conscious of how people

looked at me and my body, admits
Dylan Pena.
But thats happily not the situation
today. Earlier this year, the 14-year-old
JCOSS pupil who was bullied at school for
being overweight picked up a copy of the
bestselling book, Lean In 15, by fitness guru
Joe Wicks, and pledged to get healthy.
After following the diet and exercise
regime, the Barnet schoolboy wowed his
family and friends by shedding just under 3st.
On a whim, he used Snapchat to send photo-
graphs of himself before and after his weight

loss to his hero and was shocked when
Wicks who is also known to his millions
of fans as The Body Coach replied and
invited him to meet in person.
He said: Thats amazing, youre my hero.
Ive got to meet you. I was shocked, but so
happy, says Dylan.
Following their meeting, while Wicks was on
a shoot for Mens Health magazine, the 31-yearold fitness coach shared a photograph of the
pair on social media and within hours had
reached a phenomenal 30,000 likes.
Commenting underneath the picture, Wicks
wrote: Today I met this awesome 14-year-old
dude called Dylan who picked up my #Leanin15
book after his mum was given it as a gift Im so
happy my book has helped him on his journey
to being healthy and confident. I truly believe
that in order to change the health of the nation
we need to start them young and encourage
our kids to learn about nutrition Double tap if

Speaking to Jewish News, Wicks added:
Ive been blown away by Dylans determination and what hes achieved. His story is so
inspiring hes so motivated and has done a
phenomenal job at losing weight. He is the
absolute definition of a lean winner!
Proud mum Harriett described her sons
achievement as admirable, adding his weight
loss had changed his whole life.

again and he now loves fitting into skinny
jeans and trying on small tops and jackets.
Dylan has learnt very early on that eating
healthy and keeping fit is an amazing way to live.
The active teenager, who plays Sunday football for a team in the Watford Friendly League,
continues to work out every day, has cut junk
food out of his diet and prepares healthy
lunches to take to school with him.
One hundred percent it works, adds Dylan.
Before I found Lean In 15, I had looked at other

diets, which were low carb so you would lack
energy, or no sugar, meaning you couldnt treat
yourself. But this was different. Joes philosophy is if you work hard, you can have treats.
Harriett adds: His confidence is overwhelming compared to what it was and hes
all round a much better kid.
He was obviously upset about his weight,
but now hes a very happy boy and just generally content with life.

Lucky Melvyn Pfferberg, protagonist of
comedy short film, The Five Wives & Lives of
Melvyn Pfferberg, has a gadget that does that
and more: a time machine that transports
him in and out of a Jewish speed-dating event
to a possible future he could share with each
woman he meets.
Damian Samuels, who co-wrote, directs
and plays the title role, insists the film isnt
based on his experiences. Ive only ever been
to one Jewish speed-dating event, which was a
disaster, but the film comes from no real place
whatsoever. Its a complete fantasy.
That sense of fantasy runs throughout the
film. Its not in a set location and its largely
silent: the only two characters in the film talk
gobbledegook. Samuels continues: There are

no guns, drugs, sex, cars or houses. Theres an
old TV and an old phone. I wanted to create a
world that doesnt exist, like in Amlie.
The accent of this magical world is firmly on
fun, even if dating elicits angst-ridden memories
for some. Samuels says: Whenever I tell anyone
about the concept, they say: I wish Id had a time
machine when Id gone dating! All I want is for
people to have a great time. There are at least five
or six definite laughs in the film.
The director and producer started life as
an actor hes still recognised in the streets
for his role in Basement Jaxxs Wheres Your
Head At video before branching out. He
lists his influences as Woody Allen and Mel
Brooks, two legends who also made and
starred in their own films and who inspire the
Jewishness of Samuels work as well.
He explains: A lot of Jewish films out

there are quite serious; theyre about Israel

and conflict or Orthodox issues. Many UK
productions are stereotyped, with characters
talking in that weird Jewish accent. There
isnt anything wonderfully silly and thats what
I wanted to make.
Cue a randy rabbi character, magen Davids
and klezmer music throughout. As Samuels
says, this film feels almost American in its
unapologetic Jewish nature.

The film has screened successfully in the US
and Japan and its set for its UK premiere at JW3,
alongside a screening of The Pickle Recipe, as
part of the UK Jewish Film Festival.

Long slow cooking works a kind of magic with stewing beef

or shin of beef. Over time the gentle heat transforms the
meat into tender juicy mouthfuls. Slow cookers or roasting
on a low heat intensifies flavour as well as succulence. If
you wish to increase the quantity for a large crowd just add
more meat, keep the liquid measurements the same. Ideal
for Friday night dinner.

1 kg shin beef/ stewing beef cut into 2 cm cubes

ave you any idea how heavy ski

boots are on your feet when youre
on the top of a mountain, dying for
the loo and theres a steep set of
stairs between you and the toilet seat?
Very! So just imagine the relief (so to speak)
when you arrive at said stairs and discover a
slide that whizzes you right round the corner to
the door of the ladies toilet in seconds?
Honestly, Im not taking the piste!
The Hospiz Alm Hotel in St Christoph,
Austria, is an absolute must visit. Apart from
the slide down to the loo, I think it has to be
one of the best eating places in the Alps. Huge
chicken schnitzels, lashings of apple strudel
and waiters dressed in traditional lederhosen
(with toned, bare legs on show) what more
could a (nice) Jewish girl ask for?
St Christoph is a little slice of ski heaven.
Small, refined, traditional. And with its location
at 1,800m above sea level, its one of the highest
ski resorts in the Alps, meaning you can avoid
the half-term crowds in February and ski right
in to early spring.

Today, this pretty resort far smaller than its
neighbour St Anton offers just a few hotels and
inns. But that is its glorious appeal. Wherever
you stay, the evenings are best whiled away in
rustic lounges, a gin and tonic in hand, where
you can sample hearty dishes, fine wines and
laughter.
Youll make new friends and maybe a few
enemies should you accidentally steal someone
elses boots, like one of our party did! Nevertheless, youll return home full of happy memories.
The huge Arlberg ski area is really what you
come to St Christoph for. The town is a one-of-akind location, set in an open snow bowl. A bit of
a hidden gem as its still relatively unknown, the
main draw is that you can literally ski to the back
door, making it a fantastic choice for families.
Its also just a short drive from bustling St
Anton and cosmopolitan Zrs and Lech, so
those who stay in St Christoph truly do get to
experience the best of all worlds.
The vast ski area offers something for
everyone from beginners and children to
advanced powder junkies. Youre only ever a few
paces from the nursery slopes, so kids particularly enjoy their time. The race slalom at the end
of the day makes for some perfect candid camera
snaps and not just for the kids!
One of the best things about the resort is its
virtually crowd free, so you pretty much feel like
youve got your very own private ski lift just a few
steps from your front door.
The St Christophbahn covered quad chairlift,
in the centre of the village, takes you straight up
into the heart of the St Anton side of the Arlberg.
From there, lovely, wide blue runs head in to
more exhilarating reds and, when youve caught
your breath, you can tackle the vertical challenge
of the black pistes. The views from the top are
worth the butterflies in the tummy as you make
Charlotte and her family happy in the snow
your way down.

If you fancy a day on the slopes of Lech and
Zrs for a change, then hop on the ski bus for five
or six Euros. Its worth the 45-minute journey
just for a mooch around the shops and a cup of
coffee and some strudel.
Brand new for this winter are the four lifts
that will link St Christoph and St Anton to Lech
and Zrs. Skiers are set for a snow paradise as
the Arlberg becomes the largest linked ski area
in Austria.
There are, of course, many things that
make for a wonderful ski holiday. Great snow,
sunshine, fantastic open runs, good wine, hearty
food, and oh did I mention the wine?
Theres also nothing like skiing to the back
door of your hotel. That breathless last run of the
day at maximum speed, knowing your slippers
and a hot tea are waiting for you at the end of

the piste, make all the weary limbs worth it.
And at the Chalet Hotel St Christoph
you can forget schlepping your skis on your
shoulder for hundreds of meters and the moans
from the children because their feet hurt. This
is the way to do it.
The wonder of the hotel apart from its
superb location (the Maiensee button lift starts
just outside the back door and the main St
Christoph chairlift is a two-minute walk up the
hill) is the boot and ski hire shop in the basement. It means that on arrival day you can sort
all your ski hire with little aggravation and still
with hours to spare before you hit the slopes.
The facilities are perfect for a family setup.
Well-appointed bedrooms (many with interconnecting doors) and a large, residents only
bar and comfy fireside lounge, complete with
tons of board games, means the parents as well
as the children are happy.
The large indoor swimming pool with
mountain views and relaxing loungers on
which to read and unwind after a great days
skiing, topped by the table tennis and pool
tables complete the alpine picture for the
perfect mountain hotel.
Returning guests say that St Christoph has a
certain fairy-tale charm that draws them back
year after year and its easy to see why.
Family holidays are to be cherished and
a week nestled away here in this small cosy
Alpine town is one we wont forget.

God appeared to Abraham to reveal a promise for the
future. As he spoke, three messengers arrive with a Divine
announcement that Abraham was going to have a son from
his wife Sarah.
After initial disbelief, future hope was eclipsed by an impending horror. Lot, Abrahams nephew, was in mortal danger
of being wiped out by a terrible disaster. Two of the heavenly
messengers set out to Sodom to rescue Lot and his family.
Lot, his wife and daughters escaped, hurried along by the
divine messengers who told them not to look back until they
reach the mountain. Unfortunately, Lots wife did; transfixed by
the sight of her destroyed homeland, she solidified into a pillar.
Lot and his daughters sought refuge in a cave. Believing the
world was at an end, his daughters conspired to make their
father drunk and then slept with him. The children they had
from these pregnancies were Moab and Amon.
Despite familial ties, their descendants often warred with
the Israelites and were forbidden to convert to Judaism.
After Isaacs birth, the banishment of Hagar and Ishmael
was followed by another trial of faith. Abraham was asked to
sacrifice his son. At the moment he was about to plunge a
knife into Isaacs neck, an angel called out. God knew Abraham
was willing to obey Him. Ever since, we cherish the willingness
of Jews and non-Jews to sacrifice their lives for our freedom.
We remember them and pray for a world where we will sacrifice our ego in service of God and not human lives.

KING SOLOMON
Venerated by Muslims and Masons,

King Solomon is a magnificent biblical
character. His early life is mired in
sibling rivalry; his brothers repeatedly
tried to grab the throne. Solomon was
the son of beloved Bathsheba, but the
story of how David married her is rather
racy. Because of this, Solomon was her
second son.
His name means Gods peace and
this is emblematic of his empire. David
built the empire, and Solomon consolidated it by extending trade networks and
alliances.

Adonijah, who tried to seize the throne.
He purged those attempting the putsch,
including his father chief general Joab.
Solomon allied himself with Hiram
of Tyre, and they set to trading all over
the known world. He also set up military
and trading outposts. The Falash Mura
Jews of Ethiopia are said to have been
descended from one of his outposts.
This wealth and military prowess
allowed him to build the Temple to God,
which David had not. David had blood
on his hands; Solomon was not a warrior
king. He built it as a focal centre to the
kingdom of Israel and also as a house of
universal worship and peace.
Solomon was renowned for his fame.
Three books of the Bible are said to be
his: in his youth, the romantic Song of
Songs; in his middle age, after he prayed
to God for wisdom, the Book of Proverbs; and in his older years, the dour
Ecclesiastes.
His fame spread so far that the Queen
of Sheba visited him from the Deep
South. His Temple was a wonder of the
world.
Alas, human frailty was present even

in this wisest of monarchs. Solomon
contracted marriages with princesses
from other countries and allowed them
to erect temples to their deities. This
resulted in great displeasure from
God. However, Solomon was allowed
to remain in power for 40 years on the
throne, for his father Davids sake, and
it was only after his death that his weak
son Reheboam managed to annoy people
and permanently split the Kingdom.
His defects, levies, taxes, excessive
women (1,000 wives and concubines),
regal trappings, forced labour and incipient authoritarianism, were more than
balanced by his peaceful, stable rule, his
trade ties and prosperity, the national
shrine on the Temple Mount, and his
exceptional literary legacy.
To this day, it is above all his wisdom
which is remembered. The Judgement
of a Solomon reminds us of his ability (at
the height of his power) to see the essential nature of human relationships.

on how the Torah tackles slavery
Its easy to think the Israelites of the
Torah, newly freed from Egypt, would
unhesitatingly condemn slavery as we
do today. The reality is more complex.
There are clear Jewish laws on
caring for slaves: Shabbat is for all,
not just Jews: you should not do any
work, you nor your manservant...
The Torah, surely, was ahead of its
time in directing us how to treat workers. Seen today, allowing the same
rights to a slave is hardly enlightened.
But consider those affected by human
trafficking or the conditions allegedly
endured by Sports Direct employees.
The principle that workers should have
equal rights to employers is not a given.
It also states Israelites in dire need
could sell themselves into servitude,
but this arrangement was explicitly
temporary. Non-Israelites werent so
lucky: You may keep them as a possession for your children for them to
inherit as property... (Leviticus 23:46).
How can we square these practices
with the cry of Justice, justice you
shall pursue (Deuteronomy 16:20)?

How should our community react to

Donald Trumps election victory?

and prompted Jews to question an

institution perhaps so natural it was
invisible. Does our Judaism goes far
enough in engaging with society?
Can we congratulate ourselves for
being relatively just, or should we
push ourselves, campaigning against
slavery, positively for living wages,
and considerately to avoid unethically
made cheap goods? We condemn
slavery but have not eliminated it and
may unwittingly support it.
The Torah, which always needs
to be considered in contemporary
context, initiated a conversation
in its time. With the International
Labour Organisation estimating that
21 million people live as slaves in our
modern world, what action will we
take in ours?
As you may expect from a Londonbased Liberal rabbi, I live in a sheltered community on and offline
where the majority of people seem
to have voted neither for Brexit or
Donald Trump. Its a world of liberal,
and Liberal Jewish, values.
Yet last week I awoke to the news
that someone who shares none of
those values has become president
of the USA. Shock, upset and distress
overflows on my social media platforms, interspersed with joy from the
few Trump supporters on my feed.
But this was an election where
millions of voters turned out. Analysis of Trumps victory will go on
for months if not years. But, as with

Brexit, we can see that large swathes
of people rejected the political establishments and economic systems.
There is, as we saw in Britain, a
public anger that has led to people
voting in ways which for many was
shock at best and disgust at worst.
The question for many of us is what
next? Trump was democratically
elected. Whatever our feelings, the
time has come to be part of helping to
rebuild a divided and fractured world.
As my colleague Rabbi Alexandra
Wright so wisely said recently: Now
is not the time to either abandon our
liberalism, nor our Judaism.
BREXIT AND TRUMP SHOW LARGE

SWATHES OF PEOPLE REJECT THE
POLITICAL ESTABLISHMENT
While we honour the outcome

of the election, we must once again
stand by our values to fight bigotry,
campaign for the rights of minorities
and not stand silently by words and
actions driven by hate and fear.
But most of all we must model
ways of talking to each other from
a place of care and love, a place that
embraces diversity and differing
opinions and a place that believes this
world can be full of hope and unity.
As it says in Psalms 133: Behold,
how good and how pleasant it is for
brothers and sisters to dwell together
in unity.
I was brought up with the Jewish
value of engaging in discussion to
understand and be understood. This
is the world I want for my children,
one where we offer solutions to
improve the lives of all and not one
that tries to create division and fear.

Raiders set club record with
12-0 thrashing of Los Blancos

North London Raiders A rewrote the clubs

record book last weekend as they thrashed
Los Blancos 12-0 to book their place in the
quarter-finals of the Cyril Anekstein Cup.
Recording the clubs biggest win since it was
formed back in 1991, the team went one goal
better than the previous record an 11-2 win
achieved in 2009.
Jordan Marks scored four goals, Liron
Mannie and Ben Ellis helped themselves to
hat-tricks, with Nyv Bogaire and Alex Bloch
completing the rout.
However, despite clocking up the biggest
win in the clubs 25-year history, manager
Daniel Shafron was more happy with the win,
than the margin of it.
He said: Its nice to score goals and yes
the goalscorers are always happy to get on
the scoresheet, but today was more about our
general performance than the amount of goals
we scored.
I was still disappointed from last week, so
wanted to see a big response in our mentality
from beginning to end. It could have been 1-0
and my interest still would have only been on
certain elements of our performance, so the
scoreline for me was irrelevant.

Ultimately I was happy with how we
played and how we didnt take our foot off
the gas.
Rob Richman, who managed the club
for ten seasons, leading them to an historic
double-double alongside Jonathan Green,
congratulated the club on their feat. He said:
Im ever so impressed that the guys managed
to break the club record on Sunday and know
that everyone is fully focussed on making it a
fourth consecutive trip to Wingate at the end
of the season.
Hoping his players can build on this performance to get back into the Premier Division
title race, Shafron said: What I wanted was a
positive response against Blancos and thats
what I got. The performance was what I cared
about and the manner in which they went
about it was good. Weve high standards and I
want to ensure these are met in every game.
Were judged on our results and the
bottom line is we lost our first couple of leagu
e games and found ourselves playing catch up
early on. Weve responded well since and Im
confident well challenge for silverware across
all competitions.

Israel kept alive their hopes of qualifying for the 2018
World Cup as they beat nine-man Albania 3-0 to stay
within a point of group leaders Italy and Spain.
Securing a third consecutive qualifying win for the first
time since 2008, manager Elisha Levy, said: We have achieved
a very important victory. Even when we played 11 versus 11,
we were very good, we got the opportunities and our players
showed a lot of character.
Captain Eran Zahavi scored their opener from the penalty
spot in the 18th minute after he was brought down in the box,
which resulted in defender Berat Xhimshiti being sent-off.
He saw a second spot kick saved early in the second half
after being head-butted by goalkeeper Etrit Berisha, which saw
the Albanians reduced to nine men.
However, further strikes from Dan Einbinder and substitute Eliran Ater wrapped up the win.
Zahavi said: It was a very hard away game against an excellent team. From the first minute we played better than the
Albanians.
Looking ahead to their next game against Spain, in March,
he said: We have nothing to lose against them, even if we lose

by two or three goals, no one will be surprised.

Sitting in third spot, a point behind the top two, the group
winners automatically qualify for Russia 2018, with the eight
best runners-up taking part in a two-legged play-off tie.
