Successive governments, various economists and numerous mining industry pundits
have described the financial bonanza that could be Australias if only the local mining industry would add value to the bulk raw materials we routinely export. Very few processes have met this challenge. Very few organisations have shown much patience and determination to produce a value-added product. Rio Tinto Iron Ore has achieved some measure of success in this area, and has now developed the commercial sized, HIsmelt plant in Kwinana. The HIsmelt process creates pig iron ingots directly from iron ore fines, increasing the value of the export several fold. The Risk Engineering Society (incorporating the Forensics Engineering Society) invites you to attend an evening technical presentation on the HIsmelt process, and the challenges in Risk Management that have been met by the HIsmelt team. The evenings presentation will begin with a short video that gives a brief overview of the HIsmelt process and plant. The video will be followed with a presentation by Andy Burrow, the Manager Training at HIsmelt. Andys presentation will focus on the various risk management processes that have been applied from the plant conceptualization stage, through design, construction, commissioning, start-up and operation. About the Guest Speaker: Andy Burrow holds an MSc Eng Degree in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa. Andy worked with Anglo American Corporation, and with Middelburg Steels and Alloys while in South Africa. Moving to New Zealand, Andy worked for New Zealand Steel for 10 years at its Ironmaking Plant located southwest of Auckland. Andy joined HIsmelt at the end of 1996 as a Shift Manager for the start-up and operation of the pilot plant in Kwinana. After the HIsmelt pilot plant project was completed and the plant was shut down in the late 90's, Andy became involved in various technical development and marketing support roles during the conceptual design, development, and final design phases of the commercial sized HIsmelt plant that is now operating at Kwinana. Amongst other activities while in these roles, Andy was involved with the facilitation, coordination and follow-up of the HAZOP process at the plant. When operator recruitment and plant commissioning activities started for the new facility, Andy took up his current position as Manager Training. Please join us in the Auditorium at Engineers Australia for this not to be missed presentation on practical issues in risk management within the WA mining industry.
