I do not agree to a large extent that the resistance put up by Southeast Asians was a total

failure.An example can be seen from the Aceh War put up by people of Netherlands East
Indies(NEI).In order to protect its interests,the people of Aceh fought against the Dutch
army despite its disadvantage in terms of its weak army.These resulted in about 4000
Dutch soldiers killed.Another example is the revolts against British put the people of
Malaya.In one of its revolts in Perak,British Resident Birch was murdered by the
people.People of Malaya protested against the British as to prevent any changes to the
system of slavery in Malaya,it took a few years to regain the stability in Perak .These
incidents showed that Southeast Asians resistance to prevent colonial expansion was not
a total failure as it managed to hinder colonial expansion.Hence,Southeast Asian
resistance was not a total failure.
In some areas I agree that the resistance by Southeast Asians was a total failure.As seen
in NEI,althought there were revolts against the Dutch such as the Aceh War,however it
was not able to prevent colonial expansion.The Dutch fought and put down revolts
despite the lost of its soldiers.The Dutch managed to put down revolts by the people and
was able to expand its area of control in the end.As for the British,there was less
resistance put up by the people as the Sultans in Malaya were on good terms with the
British.Apart from a few incidents such as the murder of Birch,there was not much
revolts by the people.British was also able to expand its area of control despite the
resistance by the people.These showed that the resistance by the Southeast Asians were
not successful in preventing colonial expansion.Hence,to a small extend I Agree that
Southeast Asian resistance was a total failurein prevent colonial expansion.
In conclusion,the resistance by Southeast Asians were not a total failure.Although they
were unable to prevent colonial expansion by the colonial powers,however,they did
hinder the progress of colonial expansion.The resistance cannot be considered as a total
failure in preventing colonial expansion.Hence resistance by Southeast Asians was not a
total failure.
