Do I know you?

-------------I have family, friends and acquaintances; all of whom I have known for years, an
d I'm using the word /'know'/. But I find myself questioning the validity of thi
s 'knowing'.
In a way, "knowing a person" suggests a concept whereby a person is like a piece
of music. We play this piece and listen to it again and again, each time becomi
ng more familiar with the piece. But what if what we hear, is different than wha
t's playing? What if someone other than myself - while listening to the same pie
ce - hears a completely different tune?
Perhaps my relationship with a person is more akin to seeing myself in mirror wh
ich happen to have its own opinion. From such a perspective, a relationship is s
howing me a part of myself, to which I am unaware. Perhaps some relationships sh
ow me things that I like about myself and are likely to last longer, while other
relationships show me things that I don't like about myself, and are likely to
last only a short time.
When I have a pleasing relationship, I believe that I like the other person, wha
t they say and what they do. I don't see those things as parts of myself to whic
h I am unaware.
But today I do.
Today I see, that what 'I' see in John, is a construct of things that most peopl
e can see in him, but also things that only I can see in him. Blending these two
, creates a unique image of john in my mind that's mine alone. The things that o
nly I can see in John, may have more to do with me than with John. When I speak
with other people who also know John, we can only share certain parts of his 'mu
sic'; perhaps John's rhythms, or energy. And then there are other aspects of Joh
n's 'music' that each of us perceives in a completely different way; I may hear
the music played on a piano and somebody else will hear an orchestra, yet it's a
ll the same good old John.
Just like an opinionated mirror, John reflects at us a part of ourselves that we
are unaware of, while at the same time reflecting at us its own opinion.
Is there anyone who 'Truly' knows John?
