Brake booster check valve

Brake booster check valve

The check valve in the brake booster vacuum line prevents
contamination from engine backfires and other sources from
entering the brake booster. The check valve is attached to brake

Remove left engine compartment cover. See 020 Maintenance.

Pump brake pedal a few times to reduce vacuum in brake booster.

This makes removal of check valve easier.

Remove non-return valve (A) from brake booster.

Unlock quick release coupling (B) to remove vacuum line.

Installation is reverse of removal:

Check sealing ring on brake booster and replace if needed.
Make sure that quick release coupling is latched correctly

On Valvetronic engines, an auxiliary pump is used to supply vacuum

to the brake booster, rather than using traditional manifold vacuum.
Vacuum pump location varies based on engine application.

Brake booster vacuum pump removing and

installing (N20, N26 engine)

Camshaft-driven vacuum pump, mounted to rear of cylinder head.

Remove engine cover and foam insulator on top of engine.

See 020 Maintenance.

Remove bulkhead cover and strut tower brace. See 020


Disconnect vacuum line (arrow) from vacuum pump (A).

Brake booster vacuum pump removing and installing (N55 engine)

Working between bulk head and engine, release positive battery

cable from clip (A).

Release fastener (B) and pull vacuum line off of turbocharger

wastegate control unit.

Release fastener (C) and remove vacuum pump towards rear pulling
off of the engine.

Check seal (A) for damage before reinstalling.

Lightly lubricate seal before reinstalling vacuum pump.

Align vacuum pump motor (C) to key way on camshaft (B).

Vacuum pump can be installed more easily by rotating and
pressing in at the same time.

Remainder of installation is reverse of removal.

Brake booster vacuum pump removing and

installing (N55 engine)

Chain-driven vacuum pump, mounted on lower left side of the

engine block, together with the high pressure fuel pump.
BMW special tools are recommended to lock the sprocket in place
when removing the sprocket center bolt. Read the procedure
through before beginning the job.

Remove engine drive belt. Remove drive belt tensioner. See 020



Brake booster vacuum pump removing and installing (N55 engine)

Working at lower front of engine, pry out sealing cover for oil pump
chain tensioner. Use drift at position indicated in photo to tap side of
cover in. Note installed depth prior to removing.

Pry out sealing cover for vacuum pump sprocket. Use drift at
approximately 7 oclock position to tap side of cover in. Note
installed depth prior to removing.

Remove high pressure pump from vacuum pump housing. See 130
Fuel Injection.

Disconnect vacuum line from vacuum pump.

Unlock and disconnect electrical connector from vacuum pump


Rotate crankshaft at center vibration damper bolt until vacuum pump

sprocket holes line up with sprocket fasteners.

Lock vacuum pump sprocket in place.

Thread BMW special tool 11 8 650 into cylinder block.
Mount BMW special tool 11 0 290 to pump sprocket as shown.

Loosen and remove sprocket center bolt (A).

Working through vacuum pump sprocket opening, use a screwdriver

to carefully press tensioning rail (A) in several times until oil is


BMW specifies special press tools for removing and installing
sealing covers. Alternatively, a drift can be used to tap on side of
the cover to pivot it out of its bore. Have new covers on hand for



Parking brake components

Press oil pump chain tensioning rail (A) fully in and lock in place
using suitable pin/drift.

Remove pump mounting screws. Use care to not let screws fall into
cylinder block.

Remove vacuum pump towards rear.

Installation is reverse of removal, noting the following:

Replace pump gasket.
Use new sealing covers and install to original installed depth.
Tightening torque
Vacuum pump to engine
Vacuum pump sprocket to pump shaft

10 Nm (7 ft-lb)
66 Nm (49 ft-lb)
