Successful Removal of Furnace 12
Simulated Blackout Success

No More Delays!
Back in May this year we brought you a story about the
great work that had been achieved in minimising the
number of delays we experience with alumina deliveries
to Tomago. A key part of making the improvements sustainable was the successful implementation of an automated program at the North Gate signalling to the drivers exactly which fresh alumina unloading station they
need to take their load.

Every time a truck had to wait on site for any number of

reasons TAC was still charged for a delay averaging
$45k per annum.

Due to the ongoing support from Emissions Control &

Chemtrans we saw only 1 trip delay recorded for October due to a red light.

Well done to everyone involved in the original improvement project and a special mention for Darren
This allows not only the allocation of Alumina to the
McGilvrays programming skills, which have made
Right Place at the Right Time but has reduced our costs
this a sustainable improvement! Well Done everyone!

Successful Removal of Furnace 12

Some people across site may have noticed Relines pot shell transporter carrying something that didnt look much like a pot shell on Wednesday week!
The photo below is the culmination of weeks of tireless effort from Peter
Fishburn (CPO Fitter) with support from RIG, Tomago Engineering and Operations teams from Reline and the Casthouse. The successful removal of Furnace 12 is somewhat symbolic of the transformational journey we are on in
Cast Products on the way to 110kt billet. The ultimate goal of the project is to
bring Furnace 13 back to life and use it as an offline scrap remelt furnace for
the billet pit. This will enable scrap to be delivered to casting furnaces 10 and
11 at casting temperature, therefore removing the heat up time required to
melt the scrap on line.
A big thankyou must be extended to Peter Fishburn, Zdenko (Zig) Farmas,
Stuart Walsham, Jason Lucas, Gary Fleming and Danny Maiava for their efforts on the day. Removing this furnace took a great deal of planning and
courage and is a great example of working across departments to deliver big
results! Well done!

Simulated Blackout Success

The Shift 1 Casthouse Operations/Maintenance Team
took the opportunity to practice while the pressure was
off and simulate a shop blackout (Emergency lighting
drill).
This enabled team members to experience the scenario,
which rarely occurs and ascertain whether the current
placement of emergency lighting was adequate and if
there was opportunity to improve visibility should the
situation present itself in the future.

During the simulation it was observed that a number of

emergency lights were not operational. Areas highlighted such included critical stairwells around the Homo for
enhancement, to which a plan has already been put in
place by maintenance for rectification.
A big thankyou to our
shift Electrician Henry
Szulc for the work he
conducted in order to
make it happen!
