Classroom Management Plan

Classroom Environment Beliefs

A very important aspect that teachers need to remember when teaching is that they need a
classroom management plan. This is important because it provides a framework for the teacher to
go by that will help the classroom run smoothly. Students are not just shaped by what they are
taught but also by the environment that they are taught in. Students need to have a classroom
environment that promotes learning and individuality. Everyone thinks in different ways and
students need to learn that it is important that they express themselves in the classroom, in a
respectful and considerate manner of course. The only way that this can be done is by teachers
providing students with opportunities to take an active role in their education. When students are
provided with opportunities to interact in the classroom they become actively engaged in their
learning. Having a detailed classroom management plan can help teachers to achieve the goal of
students being actively engaged in the classroom.
Studies have shown that teachers actions in the classroom have a very large impact on
student achievement. Teachers actions are not the only thing that is important. One of the
classroom teacher's most important jobs is managing the classroom effectively (Marzano,
2003). The reason why classroom management is one of the teachers most important jobs is
because students cannot learn in a chaotic and poorly managed classroom. In the classroom
students are trying to listen to instruction while also trying to focus and not be distracted by other
things going on around them. Having a sound classroom management plan helps the teacher to

create an environment where students are not constantly being distracted by what is going on
around them. A few of the important components of classroom management, include beginning
the school year with a positive emphasis on management; arrangement of the room in a way
conducive to effective management; and identifying and implementing rules and operating
procedures (Marzano, 2003). Classroom management doesnt just extend to these components
though, it also includes the teacher setting a guideline for day to day procedures, rules, discipline
problems, and a reward system. Having a detailed classroom management plan helps to ensure
that the teacher has all basis covered so that the normal day to day procedures do not stand in the
way of students learning.

My Education Philosophy

When I first set out on my path to become a teacher I knew the reasons why I wanted to
teach and had certain ideas of what it meant to be a teacher. My reasons for wanting to teach
have never changed. I love to learn and want to share my passion for learning with my students. I
want to motivate and inspire them to learn. I want to create a classroom environment where I
promote critical thinking among my students and give them opportunities to show me what they
have learned. My ultimate goal is to leave a lasting effect on my students.
Although my reasons for wanting to teach have never changed the ideas of what it means
to be a teacher have changed slightly. I have always known that educators have very important
roles in their students lives. They are the ones that provide students with the knowledge they
need to become whatever they set their mind to. They are role models for their students and also
are the adults in childrens lives that can inspire them to have a passion for learning and to never
give up regardless of the struggles they may face. These aspects of what it means to be a teacher
I have always been aware of but through time after getting further into my education classes I
have learned so much more.
A teacher is the one that provides students with an abundant about of information that
will help them to excel in what they set their mind to. A teacher also has to create a classroom
environment that will encourage students to learn. This can be done by allowing students to take
an active role in their education which can be done by giving them opportunities to make
decisions in the classroom as well. Teachers also have to find ways of giving instruction that will
benefit the way all students learn. In the classroom there are visual learners, auditory leaners, and
kinesthetic learners. Creating instructions that takes all the unique ways that students learn into

account will help to reach all students not just a select few. Instruction is not the only important
job that a teacher has. Teachers need to make sure that they have created a classroom that runs
smoothly - one that takes into account that not everything is going to go as planned and that if it
doesnt that is okay. Teachers need to have a classroom management plan one that allows
students to know what is expected of them from the beginning and that everyone needs to work
together as a team. Teachers also need to work as a team with the students parents as well. The
parents play a big role in a childs education too and keeping them updated and informed of their
childs progress is very important. One of the most important things as a teacher that I will have
to keep in mind is that I myself will always be learning right along with my students. I am there
to inspire and motivate my students to learn but at the same time they are also teaching me every
day how to become a better teacher.

Letter to Parents
Dear Parents,
Hello, my name is Anita Hughes and I am going to be your childs 3rd grade teacher for
the 2017-2018 school year. I wanted to write and tell you a little bit about myself.
I have been teaching third grade for two years. I really enjoy teaching third grade and I
hope you come to love third grade as much as I do. I grew up here in Bluefield, West Virginia
and graduated high school from Bluefield High. I have a bachelors degree in Elementary
Education K-6. I have been married to my husband for 11 years and we have two beautiful
daughters Haley and Kylie. I am looking forward to getting to know your child and hope to have
a very a great school year.
A few important dates to remember are:

First day of school is August 7th

Parent Night will be August 12th at 6:00pm.
The yearly Fall Festival will be on September 17th from 4:00pm to 7:00pm.

I want to take the time now to give you a little bit of information on what I have planned for
the school year. Over the course of the year, I will focus on teaching students the fundamentals of
Math, English Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies for 3rd grade. In Math, instruction will
focus on teaching students the fundamentals of multiplication, division, and number and
operations of fractions. In English Language Arts, instruction will focus on teaching students

how to identify key details and ideas from texts, identify different types of texts, language skills,
and how to present their own knowledge and ideas. In Social Studies, instruction will focus on
teaching students about important geography concepts, Americas history, and West Virginias
history. In Science, instruction will focus on teaching students how to identify structures of living
things, the different layers of Earths core and how to compare and contrast them, and
fundamentals that pertain to the application of science. There will be times were I pair subjects
together to help give students a more in-depth understanding of concepts that they receive
instruction on.
In order to create a positive classroom environment I have created classroom rules with
specific expectations for all students.
Classroom Rulesa.

Listen carefully and follow directions.

b.

Be respectful of others.

c.

No cheating

d.

Always be honest

e.

Help keep your classroom neat and clean

f.

We will all use kind words

Discipline-

a. The first time a student breaks a rule they will get a verbal warning.
b. The second time they will lose their opportunity to be leader for the day.
c. The third time a student breaks a rule outside parties may be brought in such as the
principal, counselor, or parents.
Rewardsa. Students will be given positive reinforcement through verbal praise. An example of this
would be, thank you for being such a good listener Kylie.
b. Each student can earn being good points throughout the week. Students can earn these
points by following class rules, turning in assignments on time, and being quiet and
respectful throughout the day. I will keep track of students being good points by writing
them in a specified notebook.
c. At the end of every two weeks students can use their being good points to get something
out of the treasure box. Certain items in the treasure box will be worth more being good
points than others. Students can save their being good points so that they can get
something bigger out of the treasure box instead of something smaller. The items that the
treasure box may contain are: pencils, erasers, crayons, small chalkboard, and small
calculator.
d. Students can also earn homework passes throughout the year. These can be earned by
turning homework assignments on time, being respectful, helping others, and listening to
instructions.
I believe that by all of us working together we can make this a very successful year. On
the first day of school students will receive a beginning of the year packet. This packet will
contain papers for you to sign. If you would please sign and read over everything in the
packet and have your child return it to me by the end of the week I would greatly appreciate

it. I look forward to working with your child and your family throughout the school year. My
door is always open to you: please do not hesitate to contact me for any reason. Its going to
be a great year!

Grade 3
Classroom Management Plan & First Day Script

Arrival Procedurea. As students enter the classroom I will be standing by the door greeting them with a smile
and saying Good Morning.
b. Students will take all of their belongings to their seat. During this time students will be
instructed to go ahead and remove books and their take home folders and place them on
their desk.
c. Once students have taken out everything they need for the day from their bookbags I will
call each numbered row one at a time and the students will place their jackets and
bookbags on their assigned hook in the cloakroom. Each student will know which hook is
theirs because an index card with their name on it will be placed above each hook.
Students will be instructed that once their belongings are hung they are to return to their
assigned seat.
d. After every student has hung their belongings and returned to their seats I will take
attendance. As I call each childs name I want them to reply with here. As each
students name is called I will give them enough time to place their homework and any
other paperwork that they have to turn in from the day before into the turn it in basket.
This basket will be placed on top of the bookshelf at the back of the classroom near the
cloakroom.

Tardy ProcedureA. If a student comes in tardy they will first be asked if they signed in at the office.
B. If they have signed in for the day at the office they will then be instructed to hang their
belongings in the cloakroom. If the student has not signed in for the day the student will
be instructed to go to the office first before doing anything and sign in. While hanging up
their bookbag they will get out homework and any other paperwork that they have to turn
in for the day.
C. The student will then place their homework and any other paperwork they may have to
return into the turn it in basket at the back of the classroom on the bookshelf near the
cloakroom.
D. Tardy procedures will be posted on a bulletin board in the classroom and students will be
instructed regularly on tardy procedures.
E. If a student is tardy more than three times a letter will be sent home making the parents
aware of their childs tardiness. If the tardiness continues further action will have to be
taken. This will consist of a parent/teacher conference.
Absence Procedurea. When a student is absent it is very important that the work they missed be available to
them as soon as they return. In order to make sure that this happens I will have any work
that absent students have missed placed into their assigned individual slot in the
classroom mail center shelf. Students will know which slot is theirs because I will place a
label with their name on it at the front of each slot.
b. Once the student returns they will be instructed, at the end of the day, to check their slot
in the mail center shelf to retrieve all missed assignments.
c. Students will be informed that they have the number of days they were absent to
complete all of their makeup homework.

d. If a student is absent on a quiz or test day they will be expected to complete their missed
quiz or test on the day that they return to school.
Homework Procedurea. All homework assignments will be written on the board. Students will be given time to
write down their homework assignments 15 minutes prior to the end of the day.
b. If students have any type of worksheet that is to be completed it will be placed in the
students assigned individual slot in the classroom mailbox shelf. Students will be given
the 15 minutes prior to the end of the day to check their slots for any type of paper work
that needs to go home.
c. Homework assignments are to be placed in the homework basket in the morning during
attendance. The homework basket is located at the back of the classroom on the
bookshelf.
d. Students will be expected to complete homework assignments. The first time a student
does not turn in a homework assignment they will receive a warning. After that they will
receive 10 points off each day the assignment is late. Students will have opportunities
throughout the school year to receive homework passes.
e. Students homework will be graded and placed in their individual slots in the mailbox
shelf.
Returning Papersa. Returning students graded work and other papers is a very important. This is one of the
main means used to communicate with parents or guardians. In order for them to stay
informed on their childs progress they must be informed as much as possible.
b. All graded work and papers will be placed in each students assigned slot in the mailbox
shelf. If they is anything of high importance for the parent to see I will attach a brief letter

stating what the paper is for and have a place for the parent to sign it so that I know they
have received it.
c. When I grade students assignments if they have received a grade of 70 or below I will
have a place written on the page where a parents need to sign and the student will be
required to bring the assignment back to school. This will help to insure that the parents
are staying informed when their student is struggling with a particular concept.
Handing Out Suppliesa. In the classroom students love to help out with task. The way that students will get the
opportunity to help with classroom task is by being the leader for the day. Every day I
will have a student leader.
b. The easiest way to decide who the leader will be is by going in alphabetical order. This
will allow every student to get a turn.
c. I will also have a set time every day for pencils to be sharpen. This will take place after
students have seen the bell ringer for the day. I will call on a student volunteer to come up
and sharpen the students pencils that need it. I will call a different volunteer each day so
that all students get a turn to be the pencil sharpener.
Procedure for Getting Students Attentiona. The procedure that I will used for getting students attention is by clapping three times.
Once I clap three times I expect all students to clap back to me three times. This will let
me know if students are ready to listen and follow instructions. This will also let me
know which students are not on task.
Procedure for Visitor in the Room-

a. Students will be informed that they should continue to abide by the classroom rules even
if a visitor is in the classroom.
b. Students will be informed that they should be respectful of anyone that enters the
classroom.
c. If the visitor in the classroom is there to speak with the classroom students will be
informed to listen quietly and ask questions when prompted to.
d. If the visitor is in the room for only a brief time to speak with me students will be
informed to sit quietly and continue on with their work or to sit quietly until the person
has left the room.
Procedure for Getting the Teachers Attention-

a. Students will be informed that if they want to get my attention they are to raise their hand
and I will get to them as soon as possible. If they need to get my attention right away for
an emergency the students will be informed that they are to just say Mrs. Hughes. They
do not need to scream or yell my name but say it with an inside voice. I will know if my
name is spoken aloud by any student that they have a pressing matter.
Restroom Procedurea. There will be assigned times throughout the day when students will line up to go to the
restroom. Since school begins usually around seven thirty students will get a restroom
break at 9:30, after lunch, which is usually around 12:30 or close to 1:00, and after recess
which is usually around 1:30 or 1:45.
b. The procedure for lining up for lunch is that I will first call the student leader for the day
to come and line up first. I will then call students up by their numbered rows. Lining up

students this way will allow each student at some point to be at the front of line instead of
always at the back.
c. The whole classroom will walk to where the restrooms are located. Students will then be
allowed to go into the restroom four at a time. This will help to make sure that students
are not playing around in the restroom. As students exit the restroom they will be
instructed to line up as they come out of the restroom.
d. Once all students have gone to the restroom we will walk back to the classroom together.
e. Students will be allowed to go to the restroom at undesignated times if they need to. The
only time I would put a stop to it is if they seemed to being asking a numerous amount of
times. The procedure for this is that they will take a restroom pass with them. The
restroom pass will be located at the front of the classroom hanging near the front door.
Students will be informed to keep this pass on them and to return it as soon as they get
back to the classroom in its designated spot.
Lining up Procedurea. I will have students line up by first calling the leader for the day to come and stand at the
front of the line. I will then call the rest of the students by their numbered rows when we
are leaving the class. I will have the rows numbered at the beginning of the year so that
students know which row they are in. I will place the row number, written on an index
card, on the outside of the last desk, the ones closest to the door, in each row.
b. I will not always call the rows in order so that students will not always have to be at the
end of the line.
Hallway Procedure-

a. I will inform students that they are to be quit and respectful of other classrooms while
walking in the hall.
b. I will inform students that they are to stay in line while walking in the hallway.
c. When students are returning from the restroom, cafeteria, or other rooms they are to
line up in a single file line. Students will not be required to line up in the exact way
they left the classroom because this may cause confusion.
Dismissal Procedurea. I will inform students that they will have time at the end of the day to gather their
materials.
b. Students will be given the last fifteen minutes of class at the end of the day to get their
belongings from the cloakroom, check their slots in the mailbox shelf for papers that go
home, and to gather their homework.
c. I will allow students to gather their belongings by calling their numbered rows.
Bullying Proceduresa. I will inform students that bullying is not accepted in the classroom. I will encourage
students to come and talk with me if they are in anyway being bullied.
b. I will inform students that if anyone witnesses another student being bullied they should
come and report it to me.
c. In my classroom I will have a no tolerance policy for bullying.

Seating Assignmenta. Students will be assigned seats at the beginning of the year by using index cards. On the
first day as students come in the door they will be handed an index card with a number on
it. These numbers will indicate what row they are to sit in. The rows will be numbered
with an index card on the outside of the last desk that is closest to the door. Students will
sit in the first seat they come to in their numbered row. This way students will not be
arguing over which desk they will sit in.
b. Students seating arrangements may be changed throughout the year depending on needs.
An example situation would be, if there is a student that struggles with seeing the smart
board I will move them up to the front row so that they can see the smart board better.

c. Students will be given opportunities to rehearse what they have learn. This can be done
with different types of teaching strategies. A few of these are: group activities,
independent practice, and whole class activities.
d. Students will be provided with opportunities that will help to reinforce what they have
learned. This can be shown through providing different types of assessments at the end of
each lesson. A few of the different types of assessments that can be used are: multiple
choice quizzes, short answer essays, true/false questions, and informal assessments.

Classroom Rulesa. The rules selected are ones that are expected at not just the classroom level but at the
school wide level.
b. The classroom rules will be written on a poster, which will be posted on the left side of
the classroom for students to see.
c. On the very first day I will go over the classroom rules with students. I will also have a
discussion with students on why they think these rules are important. I want students to
know that the classroom rules need to be followed so that we can have a classroom
environment that helps promote learning.
d. Rules will be informed by following the classroom discipline guidelines. These
guidelines will be enforced through the first, second, and third time incident. Students
will be given two opportunities to change their behavior if it is not aligned with the
classroom rules before action by authorities outside of the classroom is taken.
e. For the first few weeks of school the students and I as a class will go over the classroom
rules each morning so that they will be aware of them.

Arrivala. The first day of school I will be standing at the door greeting students with a smile
and saying Good Morning.
b. As each student comes through the door they will be handed an index card with a
number on it. I will let them know that the number indicates what row they will be
sitting in. I will direct each student to the correct row.
c. I will inform students that they are to sit in the first desk they come to in the row.
d. After every student is seated I will instruct them to take all pencils and notebooks out
of their bookbag that they have brought with them for the day.
e. Once every student has empty their bookbag I will call each row, one at a time, up to
follow me to the cloakroom. I will direct them to hang their bookbag and jacket up on
their designated hook. Each hook will already have a label above it with each
students name.
f. After every student has put up their belongings in the cloakroom I will go over other
procedures that they will do at the beginning of each day.
g. I will let students know that once everyone has visited the cloakroom that I will call
roll. Students will be informed that every day when they hear their name called they
will say here and then will take any papers that they have to turn in for the day into
the turn in basket that is located at the back of the classroom on top of the bookshelf.
During this time I will also show students their labeled slot on the mailbox shelf,
which is located at the back of the classroom. I will inform students that their labeled
slot on the mailbox shelf is where they will receive graded assignments and any other
important papers.

Welcome Activitya. Once students have gotten settled into their desks, I will introduce myself to the class.
b. I will tell them my name, where I live, my husbands name, my daughters names, where
I went to school, and why I want to teach.
c. I will then have the students one by one introduce themselves to me and the class. I will
tell students I want them to state their name and tell us a little bit about themselves. Their
introduction can include if they have any siblings, what they did over the summer, and
one thing they hope to learn from my class.
d. This will help students to get to know a little bit about each other and give me a chance to
begin learning their names.
Bell Ringera. At the start of every day I will have a bell ringer question written on the board. The bell
ringers will change each day and I will try and focus the bell ringer to the lesson material
that we are going to start the day out with.
b. If we are beginning the day with a math lesson on different shapes such as: trapezoid,
rectangle, square, and triangle an example bell ringer that I could pair with this is: can
you tell me some of the different shapes that we see every day? Can you give me an
example of some of the different shapes that we can see in the classroom?
Arrival/Dismissal Proceduresa. As students enter the classroom I will be standing by the door greeting them with a smile
and saying Good Morning.
b. Students will take all of their belongings to their seat. Students will be instructed to go

call each numbered row one at a time and the students will place their jackets and
bookbags on their assigned hook in the cloakroom.
d. I will inform students that they will have time at the end of the day to gather their
materials.
e. Students will be given the last fifteen minutes of class at the end of the day to get their
belongings from the cloakroom, check their slots in the mailbox shelf for papers that go
home, and to gather their homework.
f. I will allow students to gather their belongings by calling their numbered rows.
