Design of RCC Structures/Design of Structures:RCC
Time: 3 hrs.
Max. Marks: 100
Note: 1. Answer any FIVE.full questions, selecting at least TWO questions
from each part, solve all problems by Limit State Design.
2. Use of JS 456-2000 permitted.
PART-A
1 a. Clearly distinguish between under reinforced, balanced & over reinforced sections.(05 Marks)
b. Explain the fol lowing:
(09 Marks)
(i)
Partial safety factor for loads and materials.
(ii)
Characteristic loads.
(iii)
Characteristic strength.
c. Explain the philosophy & principles of Limit State method of RCC design.
(06 Marks)
2

a. Define doubly reinforced beam. List the factors/situations which require the adoption of a
(04 Marks)
doubly reinforced beam.
b. A rectangular beam section 250 mm wide & 500mm deep upto the centre of tension steel
consists of 4 no. of 22mm diameter bars, find the position of the neutral axis, the lever arm,
the force of compression and tension and the safe momemt of resistance, if concrete is of M20 mix & steel is of Fe-415 grade. Adopt effective span of 6m for the beam. Find what
concentrated load it can carry at mid span?
(16 M a rks)

a. Distinguish between short term & long term deflections in case of RC structures. Mention
(06 Marks)
the main factors, which affect these deflections.
b. A rectangular simply supported beam of cl ear span 4.8m is 360mm x 580mm in cross
section. It is reinforced on tension side 'Nitl1 6 bars of 20mm diameter. Calculate short term
deflections. Use M-20 concrete and Fe-415 steel. The effective cover is 40mm. Take
superimposed live load of 28 kN/m and superimposed dead load as 20 kN/rn.

2
Assume Es= 2 x 1O)N/rnm .
(14 Marks)

A reinforced concrete beam (T beam) has an effective flange width of 1500mm and thickness
125mm. The web is 230mm wide and 600mm deep. Design the T-beam to carry a total load of
30 kN/m including self weight over a span of 8m. Sketch the reinforcements.
(20 Marks)

PART-B
Design a two way slab for a hall measu1ing 4m x Sm. The slab is supported all around on walls
of width 300mm'. The slab has to carry a live load of 4 kN/m2 & floor finish 4 kN/m2 . All edges
are discontinuous & corners are held down . Sketch the details of reinforcements. Use M-2 0 &
Fe-415 steel.
(20 Marks)
a. What are the assumptions made for limit state of collapse in compression?
(OS Marks)
b. What is IS code guidelines for longitudinal & lateral reinforcement in columns.
(05 Marks)
c. Design a column 4m long restrained in position and direction at both ends to carry an axial
load of 1600 kN. Use M-20 concrete and Fe-415 steel.
(10 Marks)
Design an isolated rectangular footing of uniform depth for the column of size 230mm x
530mm. The column is carrying a load of 1000 kN . The bearing capacity of soil is 300 kN/m2 .
Use M-20 concrete and Fe-415 steel. Ske1ch the reinforcement details.
(20 Marks)
Design a dog legged stairs for an office building in a room measuring 2.8m x 5.8m. Clear
vertical distance between the floors is 3 .6m. Tl:e width of the flight is to be l.25m. Assume live
load of 3 kN/m 2 . Use M-20 concrete and Fe-415 steel. Assume the stairs supported on 230rnm
@the outer edges of loading slabs. Sketch the reinforcement details.
