Students will be able to write a letter or an email to friends or
colleagues relating news and giving/asking for simple information.
Learning Objectives:
Students will be able to identify different parts of an informal letter and
learn the most common opening and closing salutation formulae.
Students will demonstrate their understanding by writing a letter to a
friend to tell her/him about their last holiday.

Student Learning Activities at Home


Watch the videos and write down the opening and closing formulae used
in an informal letter.
Prepare the layout of an informal letter and take it to next class.

Classroom Activities:
Class discussion in plenary. ( 5 minutes)
The teacher asks the students:
Q1 :What are the main parts of an informal letter?
Q2: What are the opening formulae you picked up from the video?
Q3 : What are the closing formulae you picked up from the video?
The teacher clarifies any problem the students may have run into.
Activity 1: pair work (10 minutes)
In pair the students have to reorder a scrambled letter. Once they have finished they
can check their answer sheet.
Activity 2: pair work ( 10 minutes)
The teacher gives the students a new letter in a scrambled order and asks them to
identify order and label the main parts of the letter. Once the students have finished
the teacher asks the students to swap pairs and compare their letters. The teacher
moves around the class, listens to pairs discussion and gives help.
Activity 3:Group work (15 minutes)
The teacher tells the students they are going to work in groups to produce a letter
similar to the one they have ordered in in the previous activity.
The students have to invent a character and decide about what he/she did during
his/her summer holidays. Each group has to write a letter, at the end the spokesperson
reads the letter in plenary. The teacher goes round to help.

Activity 4: Individual work (15 minutes)


The teacher asks the students to write a letter to a classmate to tell him/her about how
they spent last weekend.
The teacher gives the students an assignment sheet to clarify what is expected as a
final product.
Example:
- the letter has to contain all the main parts of an informal letter.
- the students have to use the appropriate salutation formulae .

Differentiation/Individualization
Students with special needs (BSE or DSA in Italy) will be given simplified tasks
according to their specific need. The teacher will prepare these tasks in advance.
Assessment:
Formative: The teachers observations of pair and group work will be used to give .
immediate feedback.
Summative : After class activities.
The students write a letter to a friend telling her/him about their last
summer holiday.
