Fraction Pizza Project

Parents and Guardians,

We have been learning all about fractions this unit in math. What better way
to show what we have conceptualized fractions than with one of Americas
favorite foods pizza!
Directions: Create a pizza (this can be done with paper, playdough, etc.)
and divide it into 8 slices. Create five different toppings that will go on some
of the slices of pizza to create a combination of different fractions. For
example, you may put pepperoni on of the pizza and put mushrooms on
of the pizza. You will create five different fractions for the five different
toppings. Include a key! For example,
=
1/8

This is an example of a
key for ONE ingredient.
This is explaining that
pepperonis are on 1/8,
or one slice, of my pizza.

Next, you will need to create three word problems using your pizza. Use the
operations of addition or subtraction. An example could be Mr. Williams
ordered a large pizza all to himself . He ate all of the pepperoni and
sausage slices. What fraction of the pizza did Mr. Williams eat? I would need
to look at the key to figure out what fraction of the pizza is pepperoni and
what fraction is sausage, then add them together to get my answer. Include
an answer key on a separate sheet of paper. Put the key and the word
problems on the inside top lid. Put your pizza creation in the bottom lid. The
final task is to decorate the outside of your pizza box to include your own
logo and design. Dominoes has its own box design and Pizza Hut has a
different one. What would yours be if you had a pizza company?
