In the article entitled Creative expression of science through poetry and other media can enrich

medical and science education published in the journal Frontiers in Neurology in 2015, Sherry-Ann
Brown exposes research that shows that incorporating arts and art expression into science can enhance
both student and teacher understanding of the material.
Expressing science into art means that students need to be able to explain the science concepts
in ways that other people can understand, which forces them to look at science concepts in a way that
they might never have come up with on their own. When students look look at a concept from a
different angle, it leads to a deeper understanding of the scientific concept. When students were
assigned to write haikus that described different disorders or diseases and their symptoms, the haiku
paper was the most accurate and best written of all the papers that the students were assigned.
When students are taught to explain science through are, they are better able to explain it in
terms that people without a background in medical science can understand, which enhances the
relationship and communication between the doctors and their patients.
A study was done on the effect of using poetry to teach science in a public classroom. When the
poetry technique was implemented, scores increased a statistically significant percentage.
Researchers argue that creativity is important in science. When scientists think creatively, they
can look at problems in ways they never envisioned before, which can lead to solutions.
