Kiev, Ukraine
Only 22.84 $ per day.
1.Town
With a location that is far off any normal European tour route,
Kiev struggles for Western tourists because you have to
deliberately be going there rather than just drifting through on
your way elsewhere. English isnt too common at this point
either, though most people report being able to get by without
much problem. Most things in Kiev are quite cheap by
European standards, though there is the situation of newly-rich
locals driving prices up and creating a posh class of restaurants
and boutiques that didnt exist until recently. Hotels are cheap, at least, so those who make the trip can
stretch their funds quite a long way if they eat and drink like a local rather than like a tourist. Inflation in
Ukraine has been a problem since 2014, so nominal prices might be higher, though that tends to go along
with a better exchange rate for visitors.

Bucharest doesnt exactly have the best reputation among
travelers, but its an interesting destination at the very least.
Some complain that the Soviet Era still feels alive and well,
though progress is continually being made, so those wanting to
see those influences should probably come soon. What
Bucharest might lack in polish, it makes up for with reasonable
prices. Its one of Europes cheaper large cities, and budget
travelers in particular will have far more good options than in
most other cities to the north or west. Hotels and hostels are
generally cheap, though quality standards might be lower than
you are used to if you book at a bottom-end place. Food and
drinks are also pleasantly cheap for most visitors, and the main attractions will barely make a dent in your
budget, so you wont be rushed to see everything in one or two days, at least.

Krakw is by far the most interesting city in Poland for
tourists, and its also easy to reach for most people. It may
not be quite as beautiful as Prague, but its usually far less
crowded and its quite a bit cheaper in most respects.
Krakw is truly one of Europes great travel bargains,
though that might not be true years from now. Hotels in
Krakw are quite cheap by European standards, and good
deals are often available in the 3- and 4-star range, so dont
automatically look for a 1-star hotel or a hostel. There are
cheaper hotels that are well away from the city center, but
standards at those can be low, and the area is often
inconvenient. The main attractions plus general
transportation in Krakw are quite reasonable, so even backpackers on limited budgets will be able to see
the museums and palaces from the inside instead of just the outside. Food is also quite cheap by European
standards, as long as you like the hearty local food. If you require something else its not quite as cheap, but
still prices are reasonable. Drinks are also quite inexpensive by European standards.

Sofia isnt one of Europes most obvious destinations, but it is
starting to get noticed by people who want to take a look at
what post-Soviet life is like and see the interesting history of
this city. Another reason to consider a visit is that its one of
the cheapest cities in Europe, where even backpackers can
afford a bit of luxury. Most of the main attractions in the city
are either free or quite cheap, so once you are here you can
get by on very little if your budget is limited. Hotels in Sofia
are good value by European standards, though be aware that
places on the bottom end of the price range might remind you
of the Soviet past. Transportation is also quite cheap, including taxis, though the extensive public transport
system should be enough for most people. The Free Sofia walking tour is highly recommended as a quick
orientation on your first day. Food and drinks in Sofia are definitely cheap by European standards, and even
quite reasonable compared to other cities in the former Eastern Europe. Fast food and other informal options
are abundant and inexpensive, and even sit-down meals are quite reasonable.

A large city with a compact and manageable center, Belgrade
is another that is struggling a bit to attract tourists after the
wars of the 1990s. The largest Eastern Orthodox church in the
world and a historic citadel are among the special things on
offer, and prices for just about everything are quite cheap by
European standards. Hotels in Belgrade offer very good value,
as do hostel beds. During the low season you can get some
very good deals at even the posh places so its worth scanning
the listings even if you are a budget traveler. The attractions
are quite cheap as well so its easy to get by on very little once
you have a bed sorted out. Food and drink are typically very cheap in Belgrade compared to European
standards, but only if you tend toward the local fare and avoid the chains and tourist places, which charge
prices similar to what they do everywhere. The nightlife in Belgrade is attracting the weekend break crowd
as well, so you wont be alone as the evening goes on..

Budapest is definitely one of the hot cities among cultural
tourists these days, and for good reason. Its unique and
historic while remaining quite cheap by most standards. Unlike
Prague, this city hasnt yet been able to adjust its prices to
meet (and frustrate) the new interest Hotels in Budapest are
particular bargains, with decent standard double rooms at midpriced places going for what youd pay for a hostel bed in
London. Rooms in the cheapest Budapest hotels might not be
up to the standards you are used to, so it could be wise to pay a
bit more for a better place. Hostels in Budapest are also great bargains. Many of the most popular attractions
in the city are free or very cheap so those on a backpacker budget will be able to experience everything
theyve come for without going broke. Food and drinks are also quite cheap by European standards,
especially the local food (which can be quite heavy) and items from street stands or fast food places.

Warsaw is a big and booming capital, but it still doesnt get as
much attention from most travelers as does Krakow, for
several main reasons. Business travelers dominate, so hotel
prices can feel high during the midweek. Still, Warsaw is a
beautiful city that is very friendly and easy for tourists. There
are plenty of decent hotels in Warsaw, with most of the better
budget options in and around the Old Town area. A large batch
of international-style hotels are going up there and in other
districts, so the choice will continue to widen. The main
attractions and general transportation in Warsaw remain quite
inexpensive by European standards. If you go to Krakow youll likely be told to skip Warsaw, but that
would be a mistake. This city is underrated and far more charming than youd probably expect.

Not many years ago, Croatia was like the newly discovered
alternative to Italy that was less crowded and way cheaper, but
things have changed and its not terribly cheap anymore.
Zagreb is still definitely cheaper than Rome, but now they
arent very far apart in many respects. Its true that the main
attractions continue to be either free or fairly cheap, so at least
you wont need to spend a fortune once you arrive, but
expenses like transportation can really add up quickly if you
arent careful. Hotels in Zagreb are still definitely cheaper than similar places in Rome, though during peak
summer season they might not seem like bargains. Some Zagreb hostels continue to offer good value to
backpacker types, however. Food and drinks are also cheaper than they are in Italy and yet noticeably more
expensive than they were only a few years ago. Unlike many other large European cities, at least its not
impossible to find modestly priced simple meals. Drink prices arent too bad, and there are some happy hour
deals around if you look..

Vilnius is pretty much a required stop for those touring the
Baltic countries, and like Tallinn and Riga, its pleasantly
affordable. In fact, the farther south you get in this region, the
cheaper things get, so this is a stand-out budget destination.
Vilnius is noticeably less touristy than Tallinn or Riga, even
though it had more of a grand look to it. This means most
things are priced for locals, and finding good deals on meals
and drinks is very easy. Similar to most other second-tier
former Soviet-bloc cities, there are few checklist attractions in
Vilnius so its more about just wandering around enjoying the
city center and then taking in the view from the castle tower. Many attractions are free and even those that
charge admission tend to charge very little. Hotel rooms and hostel beds are also wonderfully cheap (by
European standards), so Vilnius might even be a good place for a little splurge for those who are on the road
for extended trips. Three-star hotels offer very good value here, and 4-star hotels can be surprisingly cheap,
especially outside of the high season. Beer is the cheapest and most popular thing to drink here, and the local
breweries seem to have above average reputations for quality. Vodka can also be quite cheap if you are
willing to try the local stuff.

With a location that is remote for most travelers, Riga and all
of Latvia arent obvious destinations unless you are on a
serious tour of the region. Those who go to the trouble to reach
Riga will be rewarded with a pleasant and handsome city
center along with very low prices (by European standards) for
most everything. This former Soviet country costs only a
fraction of what youd spend in nearby Scandinavia, with
hotels and hostels available at prices that are drawing in the
nightlife crowd from the UK looking for a cheap weekend
break. The Old Town area is where youll find most hostels and hotels, and fortunately there is so much
competition among restaurants and bars that deals are common and prices are quite low. If you can get a
cheap flight, this is one of the better places for a stag weekend and that sort of thing. In addition to the cheap
and hearty local food and the free-flowing and cheap local lager beer, even the museums and other major
attractions cost very little.

Istanbul used to be considered a great budget destination, but
things have changed a bit recently and now its nearly as
expensive as many other large cities in southern Europe. Its
true that there are individual bargains to be had still, though if
you want to live it up a bit it will definitely cost you. Hotels in
Istanbul are more expensive than you might have guessed, at
least during prime tourism season in the warm months. Hostel
beds continue to be a great deal, as do private rooms at many
of these hostels, so thats an area where you can keep costs
lower. For some great bargains with excellent central locations
check out our recommended Istanbul hotels list. The main
attractions and the popular tours are also fairly expensive, so its a good idea to figure out the highest
priorities rather than just rushing around trying to do it all. Food and drinks are relatively cheap, and
especially if you go for street food or the places aimed at the local crowd.

While Bratislava hasnt undergone the kind of turmoil that
many of its neighbors to the south have in recent decades, the
city is still not yet a tourist magnet. Being in the shadow of
Vienna could help, however, especially for those looking for
something cheaper and different. Hotels and hostels in
Bratislava are very good value by European standards, yet not
as cheap as the larger cities to the south. The Bratislava Old
Town is very popular and worth spending a bit more for
central accommodation. This is a city that seems to be almost
overrun with international dining options, so finding local food
(which will be cheaper) can be a challenge, but one that will keep your expenses well down and give you the
authentic experience at the same time.

S plit isnt as famous as its southern neighbor Dubrovnik, but
its arguably just as charming and interesting, not to mention a
far better travel value. The Old Town areas of the two cities
are very similar, though Split feels like a living city while
Dubrovnik exists only for tourists. This city is also a bit older,
and far easier to reach (unless you are on a cruise ship), so it
would be unwise to skip it and focus only on Dubrovnik.
Hotels in Split are actually dominated by apartment rentals and
room (sobe) rentals, which tend to be very good value. Many
of the most interesting sights around town, including the stunning Diocletian Palace, are free or mostly free.
Split is also the place to catch a ferry to one of the many nearby islands for an even more unique experience.
Food and drinks in Split are similar to Dubrovnik, except they tend to be much cheaper and far less touristdominated. Youll dine and drink among actual locals in Split, so it doesnt take much effort to find places
with local prices.

Santorini is among the most popular Greek islands, and its
included here mostly as an example of what to expect from
most of the dozens of popular holiday islands in the area.
There are only about 15,000 year-round residents yet there are
about 800 hotels, almost all of which are only open between
April and October. The island has about 15 towns and villages,
and hotels are found in various clusters on every corner. There
are ruins and archeological sites dating back many thousands
of years, but a huge majority of people come here just to relax
in the sun during their summer break. You can rent ATVs and drive around the island if you are in the mood
to really take a look around. Hotels and hostels on Santorini start at very low prices and go way up into the
stratosphere from there. In other words, this island, like many other Greek islands, caters to nearly every
budget. Those staying on a shoestring will get small rooms with no views and uncomfortable beds, and
theyll be eating gyros or similar foods much of the time. If you want to splurge you can get good value and
often great views at the same time. Local wine and beer tend to be quite cheap on Santorini, especially
during the abundant happy hours.

Moscow is certainly one of the worlds great cities from a
historical standpoint, but for tourists its still largely
undiscovered. Now that Western visitors are welcome the
infrastructure is building, though it can still be a frustrating
place to go. Another difficulty the city has is that Moscow is
very expensive, even by most European standards. Hotels in
the lower categories can be affordable, but standards tend to be
equally low. Once you get into the nicer business hotels the
prices skyrocket to among the most expensive hotels on earth.
There are a handful of hostels in Moscow, which are also
expensive compared to other hostels, though at least cheaper than Moscow hotels. Once you are in the city
youll find that transportation is cheap, and most of the main attractions are quite affordable as well. Food
and drinks can be a problem for budget travelers since places with English-language menus are typically
incredibly expensive. You can actually eat and drink well in Moscow for a reasonable price if you can
navigate the restaurants and watering holes where the locals eat and drink.

Ljubljana is yet another small European capital with a lovely Old
Town center, and not many checklist attractions beyond that.
Slovenia itself is known mostly as a nature destination, with Lake
Bled, the original Karst rocks, and some famous caves. So the fact th
at its modest capital city is cheap and pleasant is just a bonus. This
is one of those cities that many visitors fantasize about moving to
someday because it has a storybook center, friendly locals who
speak English well, and low prices on most things. That also makes
it an ideal place to chill out for those on longer trips because its
lovely and yet you wont feel like you are missing out on things if you just hang around for awhile. Hotels in Ljubljana
are predictably affordable by European standards, yet quality is generally high. Hostels are also quite cheap,
although the cheapest ones are a bit away from the city center so its probably worth paying a bit more for a central
location. Ljubljana is also known for its cuisine, as an enjoyable blend of Italian, Austrian, and Slavic influences.
Bosnian food is a highlight here, and a good bargain. Local beer and wine are also very affordable by European
standards, and you wont have to search far to find a cheap pint.

Tallinn is suddenly on many travelers lists, and the tourist
infrastructure is expanding rapidly. The city straddles the
relatively cheap zone of the former East as well as the insanely
expensive zone of Scandinavia, so its no surprise that prices
here are mostly somewhere in between. There are some good
bargains at hotels in Tallinn, and standards are fairly high, at
least in the 3-star and above ranges. Hostels in Tallinn can be
quite cheap, and most of them have affordable private rooms
that are a good alternative to the 1 and 2-star hotels.
Fortunately, most of Tallinns main attractions are either free
or quite inexpensive, so the primary costs of your trip will be the airfare and hotel. The Old City and various
cathedrals around are popular and always free to enter. Food and drinks are relatively cheap by European
standards, and especially by Scandinavian standards. You can find filling meals at casual places that should
fit into a backpackers budget, or get a lot more quality for a much higher price at the proper restaurants.

Athens is certainly one of the worlds great cities, at least for
people who care about culture and history. Its also a great stop
for a few days for people on their way to or from the Greek
Islands, and fortunately you can see all the main highlights in
two days or so. The city is cheap compared to places like
Rome or Paris, but not as cheap as many might expect it to be.
Hotels in particular can be pricey, partly because the city
center is quite compact and places with good locations can get
away with charging quite a bit. There are several new hostels,
a few near the foot of the Acropolis, so if you are on a tight
budget you might consider those, whether in a dorm or private
room. The main sites arent too expensive, at least compared to
how amazing and important they are, so you wont need to spend a fortune during the day. Food and drink
can be cheap in places meant mostly for locals and quite pricey in the places with English-language menus
out front. Its easy enough to stick to a budget if you are careful, and even many of the tourist restaurants
have good specials.

1.Town
Naples has a mixed reputation among travelers, as its
fascinating and quite different from the tourist cities to the
north, but its also edgy and often in the headlines for garbage
strikes. Staying safe is pretty easy if thats your priority.
Another part of the appeal of Naples is that things tend to get
cheaper the further south you go in Italy (except for Rome
itself), so your budget goes a longer way here. Hotels and
hostels tend to be much cheaper than elsewhere, though quality
can be dodgy and some neighborhoods are not suited to
everyone. A trip out to Pompeii is the highlight for many
people, and its a fairly cheap day out, and most of the major attractions in the city tend to be reasonable as
well. Food and drinks can feel like bargains in Naples if youve come from Rome or Venice, but some of the
better deals are off the beaten path and away from the tourist zones.

Compared to most of the rest of western Europe, Madrid is a
bargain. Hotels are reasonably priced and standards are quite
high, and hostels are plentiful in the city center for those on a
tighter budget. Find the best deals on our recommended
Madrid hotels page for great choices that are cheap and have
central locations. The attractions mostly have very reasonable
price tags and several of the museums have frequent periods
with free admission so the budget tr aveler can see a lot for
very little, as long as they dont mind the big crowds that
always come along with that approach. Food in Madrid is also
refreshingly cheap compared to most of the rest of Europe, and
those who like ham will be especially happy here. Tapas joints
are all over and budget travelers will have no problem assembling an affordable meal in these social
establishments. Drinks also tend to be cheap, especially the beer that is so common at the tapas restaurants
and most everywhere else. Good wine can be found in restaurants at very reasonable prices as well, though
mixed drinks can be pricey, especially at night clubs and such.

In addition to being exciting and a lot of fun, Berlin is one of
the more affordable major European cities for visitors. Hotels
are abundant and reasonable deals are normally easy to find,
though in summer its best to book in advance if you can. You
can sometimes get excellent rates at high-end places when
there are no trade shows in town. Check our recommended
Berlin hotels list for some great choices that offer low rates.
Most of the more interesting attractions are free or cheap, so
you wont need to spend a fortune just to see the main
highlights. The Sandemans New Berlin free walking tours in
particular are excellent, and well worth the 5 or so tip youll
give the guide at the end. If you want to do all the main
highlights along with a few city tours in only 2 or 3 days, then the Berlin Pass is worth considering. Food in
Berlin is also quite reasonable, with filling and interesting meals being pretty easy to find at moderate prices.
There are so many bars all around the city that drink prices tend to be decent as well, and buying beer or
wine in a supermarket is also easy to pull off if you want to get a head start before leaving your hotel or
hostel.

Nice is the largest city along the Cte dAzur, and its got
plenty to recommend it, especially for those who dont mind a
beach made of gravel. In addition to several notable attractions
of its own, Nice is a short train ride from both Cannes and
Monaco, so its an ideal base for those wanting to explore the
more expensive parts of the French Riviera. Along with being
the largest city, Nice is also the cheapest city in the area for
tourists, as long as you are willing to stay at least a few blocks
from the bea ch. There is a good budget-travel infrastructure in the city, so even backpackers can find things
they can afford on a short visit. Food and drinks do tend to be expensive by most standards, though quality is
predictably high as well. If you are a budget-conscious traveler youll likely want to limit your time in this
region unless you are coming during the winter months.

Florence is the heart of Tuscany and on every itinerary of
those touring around Italy. The city center is rather compact so
its easy to get around and see all the main sights in just 2 or 3
days if you are rushed. This is also the best city to use as a
hub, so you can consider the cheap day trips from Florence as
well. Fortunately, Florence isnt quite as expensive as Rome or
Venice, though hotels with central locations can be pricey here
as well, especially during summer. There are quite a few
hostels in F lorence as well, and private rooms in some of
those are good alternatives for budget travelers. The main
attractions are reasonably priced, though especially for the
Uffizi its advised to book online in advance for an extra fee to
be sure youll actually get in. Budget travelers should have a look at our Florence cheap travel tips on how
to get the most out of your visit while spending the least. Food and drinks run the gamut in prices, with quite
a few budget options available, though most of the classic Tuscan cooking does get expensive in the touristy
places. Florence is also a great base for a visit to Cinque Terre, which doesnt have to be expensive.

Bruges (or Brugge in Flemish/Dutch) is one of the more
touristy cities in Europe, but its also charming and authentic
as well. Its also small, so most people can see most everything
of interest in only 2 days or so. Bruges isnt as expensive as
one might think, considering its so often jamm ed with
visitors. Prices in general are typical of this part of Europe, and
things become more affordable if you go at least a few blocks
away from the main squares in the city center, especially with
hotels and hostels. The attractions may not be terribly cheap,
but the very helpful Bruges Card is available for free at all the
hostels and some budget hotels, and that shaves a couple euros
off the prices of most things. Food and drinks are also of
typical prices for the region, and again, walking a couple blocks away from the main squares will save
money if your budget is tight.

Many people only know Hamburg as the place where the
Munich has prices that are typical of Germany, which puts it
on a similar level to Amsterdam and definitely cheaper than
London or Paris. The exception is if you are planning to come
for Oktoberfest when hotels and hostels jack their prices way
up. Otherwise you can usually find some good deals when
searching for accommodation, especially in the neighborhood
near the central train station. This is a very outdoor city so
many of the more interesting sights are free or quite cheap,
which helps those on a low budget keep from going broke.
Even the Oktoberfest itself is affordable if you dont plan on riding the rides, as food and drink prices tend
to be more or less in line with most restaurants, and everything else is free. Thanks to an excellent system of
the S-bahn and U-bahn trains, transportation in Munich is quite cheap, especially if you opt for the all-day
pass. On the other hand, its difficult to find food and drinks on the cheaper end of things, unless you dont
mind the wurst (sausage) carts you see on many sidewalks.

During the famous Celtic Tiger boom in Ireland, Dublin
quietly became one of the most expensive cities in the world
for tourists. If the euro is strong against your currency then
things are even worse, although some prices have actually
come down in recent years. Hotel bargains are possible and
theres plenty to choose from, including many good hostels
with good locations. The tourist area in Dublin is quite
compact so be careful of cheap hotels well out of the city or
near the airport, as the mon ey you might save likely wont be
worth it. City tours and some of the more famous attractions
are on the expensive side, but things dont really get out of hand until you start with food and drink. Unlike,
say, London, its hard to find a simple meal that youd consider cheap. And even though Dublin now has a
reputation as an international party city, be prepared to drain your wallet if you want to participate. Beers
here are expensive and everything else is more.

1.Town
While Vienna is grand and important, Salzburg is photogenic
and endlessly charming. At the base of the Alps, this is the
place to visit in Austria beyond the capital, or perhaps even
instead of the capital. In addition to the gorgeous old town in
Salzburg, visitors here tend to focus on Mozart-related sights,
and those associated with the Sound of Music movie. The
Mozart birthplace and the Mozart resident can be a bit dry, but
the Sound of Music bus tour is a blast, even for those who
might not know the movie well. Hotels and hostels in Salzburg offer pretty good value for this region,
although they can be crowded and/or sold out during the summer festival season, so booking ahead is
critical. Food and drinks are also good value for this part of Europe, even at some of the more touristy places
in the Old Town and nearby. The Augustiner Brewery is a cheap and unforgettable evening for beers and
traditional food.

Vienna is one of Europes great cities and definitely the
grandest city in the German-speaking world, but all of that
gorgeous architecture and culture doesnt come cheap. The
cultural and historical opportunities here are rivaled by few
others, and things are quite tidy and organized too, so be
prepared to spend some money to really enjoy it all. Most of
the most famous attractions in the city are cheaper than they
are in, say, Paris or Rome, but those who want to hit all the
main highlights will still find it fairly expensive. Fortunately
the public transportation is efficient and reasonably priced, and
there are plenty of interesting things to see and do that dont
cost anything. If you want to see all of the citys top sights in 2 or 3 days, see our Vienna Pass review as it
might be your best bet. Hotels in Vienna are rather expensive at the mid and upper ranges of things, but
some bargains do exist in the lower reaches. Youre likely to be staying outside of the main ring road area,
so youll sacrifice some time going back and forth, though it does keep your budget more intact. Vienna
hostels can be good bargains, however, as can private rooms at those hostels. For food and drink this is a
typically expensive European capital, with sit-down meals costing quite a bit, and cheaper offerings often
being hard to find. The exception is the sausage stands and noodle stands, which are all over town, where a
filling meal can be fast and fairly cheap.

Luxembourg is forgotten by most European travelers, though it
really shouldnt be. Its loaded with history and its placement on the
crest of a mountain group makes for some amazing views to go
along with endless charm. This city is often discussed when those
lists of richest countries per capita come out, and many in
Luxembourg are very wealthy, but that doesnt really translate into
the tourist scene, so prices are moderate and typical of this part of
Europe. Being a smaller city there are fewer budget options,
including only one proper hostel, but there are enough cheaper hotels
in Luxembourg to meet the demand most of the year. You can see pretty much all the highlights in two days
and one night, so even if you cant find a cheap hotel it wont impact you much.

Ibiza is all about hanging around on the beach in the afternoon
and partying at night and into the morning. If that isnt your
scene then there are certainly better places for a holiday in the
area. While Ibiza has some very cheap hotels, it has no real
hostels, and its not really a great destination for budget
travelers. You can find drink specials advertised during the
day, but at night the big nightclubs ch arge a fortune just to get
in, and then much more for anything to drink. Fortunately its
possible to just hang around the beach during the day and
spend very little money. Otherwise Ibiza is a place to come for the party and assume youll spend a lot in the
process.

Dubrovnik deserves its reputation as a hot city for cultural
travelers. Its small, beautiful, and very historic, and if it were
easier to reach it might just be overwhelmed by
visitors.Cultural travelers will want to focus on the gorgeous
and extremely touristy Old City, where bargains of any kind
are hard to find. Sunseekers have plenty of options of beachy
hotels up and down the coast a bit. Hotels right in the Old City
area can charge high rates and stay busy at least all summer, so
the only way to find a bargain is to look a bit outside the
center. Apartment rentals and sobes (private rooms) are much
easier to find than actual hotels in the Old City, and can be
good value at least. The only hostel in the Old City is twice the price of some of the others. Fortunately, the
main attractions are reasonably priced, and theres plenty of free and cheap things to do, so once you have a
room you are doing okay. Food and drinks can be pricey in the Old City as well, but some cheaper items are
around if you look around.

Rome is one of those must-visit cities and the Italians know it
so things tend to be more expensive than you might expect.
Hotels in particular are strangely pricey for this part of Europe,
though some cheaper options are available in the slightly seedy
area near the Termini train station. There are plenty of hostels
so finding a bed is rarely a problem, especially if you book in
advance. Check out our recommended Rome hotels and hostels
for some great choices at very good rates. The attractions in
Rome are quite reasonable and many of them are actually free,
so this isnt a city that will cost a fortune every time you want
to go see something. The few famous ones that do charge are
well worth it anyway. Some attractions, most notably the
Vatican Museum tour, have very long queues, and going early in the day is recommended. If you are in a
hurry then youll probably want to look into the Rome & Vatican Pass, w hich allows you to skip the long
queues and comes with a bus tour as well. Food and drinks in Rome can be tricky. The main hotel areas in
the city are jammed with places well located for tourists, with English menus out front. These places tend to
be noticeably more expensive than their more-local counterparts, so one of the tricks for saving money is to
get away from the tourist districts and explore the local neighborhoods a bit.

1.Town
Reykjavik is famously expensive, although its gotten a bit
better since the 2008 currency crisis. Still, nearly everything
you will want to do will cost more than almost anywhere else
in Europe, or on the planet for that matter. Hotels in Reykjavik
can actually be reasonably priced if you shop early to find a
good deal, or if you come outside of the main tourist season in
summ er. Shared bathrooms are pretty much the norm all over
Iceland in the budget category, and you rarely even get a sink
in the room, so get used to that. There are a few hostels in
Reykjavik as well, which can keep from exploding your
budget. Take note of the fact that most of the cheaper hotels
and hostels are actually some distance from the city proper, so they may not be ideal even if they are cheap.
Food is quite expensive, as is any kind of alcohol. Think about the duty free shop on your way in and start
off in your hotel room. Most people only stay in the city for a day or two and then they circle the island in a
bus or a rental car. Once outside Reykjavik prices do ease a bit, but the whole experience is so amazing that
its hard to feel bad if you can afford it somehow.

Brussels gets ignored by most of those who tour Europe, and it
deserves its reputation for being a city of international
bureaucrats, but it also has a charm that is undeniable.
Compared to most European cities its a bit on the expensive
end of things, with relatively few options for those on tight
budgets. Hotels in Brussels are often full of business travelers
so they tend to be expensive unless you come on a w eekend or
during the summer break. If you can adjust your dates its
worth looking into, since you can sometimes get great bargains
at the better places if you time it right. There arent many
hostels in Brussels, and those that are here arent particularly
cheap. The main attractions, except for the Grand Place and
the nearby Mannekin Pis statue, are relatively expensive as well. This is a tough city for a backpacker,
which is one reason why most of them stay only a day or two if they stop here at all. Food and drinks are
also quite pricey by local standards, especially if youd like to sit down in a proper restaurant near the city
center.

Amsterdam is a relative bargain among Europes great cities in
some ways, but hotel and hostel prices still make it hard to do
on the cheap. The tourist district in the city center contains
everything that youll want to see, and its small enough to
walk from one end to the other in about 40 minutes so you
might not need any transportation once you are situated. There
are hundreds of hotels and hostels within this area, and they
almost all come with a filling breakfast, with tax included in
the price, so keep that in mind when comparing prices.
Standards are fairly high, but be warned that 2-star and below
hotels often have incredibly steep staircases that have been known to give some people a bit of trouble.
Choose from our recommended Amsterdam hotels and hostels for great locations and value at highly-rated
properties. Amsterdam isnt known as a food destination, but still the selection of restaurants and cuisines is
amazing. Bargains can be found easily, and plenty of more upscale gourmet options are easy to find as well.
If you are a museum type then this city is world class, and you might also consider one of the iAmsterdam
card passes, which include admissions to most of the major sites (not including Anne Frank House) as well
as a tram/bus pass for each day.

Edinburgh will be a welcome relief to anyone coming from
London, as its noticeably cheaper. As long as you arent
visiting during the August festival season you should be able
to get a reasonably deal on either a well located hotel or hostel,
at least compared to London. If you are coming in August,
heres how to do the Edinburgh Festival Fringe on the cheap.
The attracti ons in Edinburgh range from quite expensive to
completely free, as state-run museums throughout the UK have
no admission charge. Its also worth mentioning how far north
Edinburgh is and that the days are extremely long in summer
and quite short in winter. The cost of food and drinks is also lower here than in London, though of course
your options are far more limited as well. There are plenty of snack bar and sandwich places around the city
if you are looking for a cheap meal, and plenty of great restaurant choices if you want to try some local
favorites like haggis.

In some ways Paris can be a very expensive city to visit, but it
doesnt have to be. If you book a hotel overlooking the Seine
and you eat at the restaurants nearby you might think Paris is
the most expensive city in the world. However, if you stay a
bit outside of the center and focus more on restaurants where
Parisians (rather than just tourists) eat, the place can seem like
a bargain and the food will be better. Excellent food can be
found in neighborhood bistros, especially if you focus on the
plat du jour (plate of the day), and while beer and spirits tend
to be weirdly expensive, wine can be a great bargain almost
everywhere. You dont want to skimp with the big attractions, though fortunately they arent too expensive
anyway, and most museums have free-entry days once per month so if your budget is tight you should
investigate that. We discuss whether the Paris Pass is good value or not on another page. The free walking
tours given by Sandemans New Paris are excellent and well worth the 5 or so tip youll want to give the
guide at the end. And all the gorgeous architecture and monuments can be appreciated for free from the
sidewalk as well.

Oslo is the gateway to Norways famous fjords and other
natural attractions, so its a good thing that its usually not
necessary to spend more than a day or two in the capital.
Charming as it may be, Oslo is very expensive by nearly
anyones standards, on a level near Stockholm, but without
some of the obvious tourist attractions. The city is a business
hub, however, so there are quite a f ew well-appointed hotels
catering to the trade show and convention business. Prices at
these Oslo hotels can vary from reasonable during slow
periods to outrageous during Nobel Prize week and other busy
times. Transportation is also comparatively expensive, as are the main attractions, so if you are on a
backpacker budget its important to plan wisely and take advantage of the free things, like the National
Gallery. Food is quite expensive as well, and even fast-food options can cost more than a proper meal in
southern European cities. Drinks are typically outrageous for Scandinavia, so consider the duty-free shops
on the way in.

Copenhagen is a beautiful city and a notoriously good-looking
population, but unless you are coming from Sweden, its also
very expensive. Hotels are of pricey even during the off
season, and are worse during the peak summer months. There
are a few hostels, including four run by the governments
Danhostel program, and they can give your budget a break as
long as yo u dont expect much fun at the same time. Most of
the attractions are also shockingly expensive, so its good that
strolling around the beautiful neighborhoods and the long
Stroget shopping street are free. There are other free things to
do, thankfully. Food and drinks are also quite expensive, with a cheap meal in a restaurant nearly impossible
to find. Self-catering by going to a supermarket can help keep costs down if thats important. Beer in
Copenhagen is quite expensive as well, and wine and spirits are even worse. Again, self-catering for the
early part of the evening can really help.

If you are looking for a base in Switzerland to be able to enjoy
the Alpine scenery and activities, the small town of Interlaken
might be ideal. It occupies a valley between two lakes and the
whole area is surrounded by mountains. This is certainly the
adventure capital of Switzerland if not all of Europe. In
summer you have trekking, rafting, and bungee jumping
among your options, and in winter there is great skiing and
snowboarding nearby. For the best Alpine views and
experiences you are even better off being based in Gimmelwald, Murren, or Lauterbrunnen for at least part
of your stay. These villages are all very near by and easy to reach in a short time once you get to Interlaken.
Gimmelwald is tiny, car-free, and one of the most charming places on earth. Hotel and hostel prices in
Interlaken are at least a bit lower than those in the big cities in Switzerland, but they are still quite high by
even normal European standards. This isnt an area that budget travelers can just come to and linger in
without bleeding their savings dry. Read more about why you should visit Interlaken or Lucerne for the best
Alpine experiences. One important thing to know about is that all accommodation in the area includes a
resort tax for each guest, but that entitles you to a personalized Interlaken Guest Card, which is good for free
public transportation and discounts on most of the top attractions. So while bed prices might seem steep, at
least you get something in return.Food and drink prices are also typically high as elsewhere in Switzerland.
Budget travelers might want to self cater at least one meal a day, and there are a couple cheap supermarkets
to help with that. As with everywhere in Switzerland, a sit-down meal starts at around US$20. Alcohol is
expensive in restaurants and bars, but not so bad in supermarkets.

Stockholm has a reputation for being expensive, and it
absolutely deserves it. This is among the priciest cities on the
planet for a tourist, to the point that it can break the budget of a
backpacker even if they are just there for a quick look. Hotels
in Stockholm are generally quite nice and many of them are
luxurious so its not like the visitor feels ripped off, though it
is frustrating th at finding a simple and cheap room is nearly
impossible. The hostels are a decent value, as are private
rooms in those hostels, which might be a better alternative for
those trying to save money. If you are in for a quick visit, you
should seriously look into the Stockholm Pass with hotel
package, as its actually quite an amazing deal. The attractions and the transportation are also priced at a
level that puts them at the top end for all of Europe. The touristy parts of the city center are fairly compact
so a person can just walk around and admire the wonderful shops and attractive locals, but once you want to
actually do something its going to cost quite a bit. Food, of course, is also quite pricey, with even simple
meals or fast food costing more than far nicer fare in southern or central Europe. Hot dog carts are easy to
find, and with these you can at least get an okay meal at an affordable price. Drinking is also quite
expensive, with Sweden taxing alcohol heavily as a way to try to get the locals to lay off a bit, and its hard
to know how well that policy has worked.

In between the fjords on Norways stunning west coast,
Bergen is the countrys top draw for tourists. If you are only
going to make one stop in Norway, this should be it, although
Oslo and Trondheim are both worth a look if you have more
time. Unfortunately, food and drinks in Bergen are shockingly
expensive, to the point that backpacker-types will find the
place to be very frustrating. Everything, even in supermarkets,
costs double what it does in most expensive European cities.
The hostel beds are expensive, and there are almost no budget
hotels at all. On the plus side, the 3-star and 4-star hotels in Bergen are surprisingly good value, so midrange travelers are well looked after at decent room rates. Also, most attractions are free or reasonably
priced here, so its really just the food and drink that can be problematic.

London is one of the most expensive cities to visit on the
planet. Once you learn your way around a bit you can keep
your budget under control, but when you first arrive it feels
like you are being beaten up by shockingly high prices. Cheap
hotels are available in some neighborhoods, but expect a tiny
and worn-out-looking windowless room if you go too low. See
our re commended London hotels and hostels page for great
value at well-located places. The good news is that almost all
of the famous museums, including the huge and amazing
British Museum, are free to enter for everyone. The free
walking tours given by Sandemans New London are also
excellent and worth the small tip youll give the guide at the end. But most of the other famous attractions
are crazy expensive, so research the many free things to do if your budget is tight. On the other hand, our
review of the London Pass shows that its quite good value for many visitors. The London Eye (Ferris
Wheel) is extremely popular but it is not included in the London Pass. However, you can save 10% to 20%
by ordering London Eye tickets online. Food and drinks can also be frustratingly expensive, especially if
you stay in the main tourist areas. Finding your way to other residential neighborhoods is a money-saving
key, and itll give you a better feel for the city at the same time. If you are trying to keep costs low while
having a great time anyway be sure to check out our London budget travel tips. Most people stay in London,
but there are many great and cheap day trips out of London to consider as well.

Helsinki is a fascinating combination of influences that arent
found elsewhere and its clean and well organized, but its
notoriously expensive as well. From a visitors perspective its
not quite as expensive as Stockholm, but compared to nearly
anywhere else in Europe it will seem pricey. Hotels in Helsinki
are quite expensive by most standards, but at least the quality
is usually very high so you may not feel like you are being
taken advantage of. Its tough to find a real budget h otel,
though if you are coming on a weekend you might find prices
at the nicer places are within your range since so many
business travelers arent in town. Hostels are all fairly
expensive by international standards as well. The main attractions are actually quite inexpensive, with many
of the better museums in the city actually being free. Food and drinks will, unfortunately, eat into your
budget, so those on a backpacker fund will want to seek out casual places rather than the sit-down
restaurants in the tourist area. Youll find many affordable kebab shops in the city center, and if you head
out to the somewhat bohemian suburb of Kallio youll find better deals on food and even beer.

Venice is one of those places you just have to see yourself to
believe. Lovely as it is, its main problem is its popularity
compared to its size. The island gets so crowded during
summer that half the people who visit in peak season come
away hating the place. Its crowded in other seasons too, but
more manageable. The city is also quite expensive by Italian
standards, though it can be done on a moderate budget if you
are careful. Hotels on the main island are notoriously
expensive, but you ca n find reasonably priced places a few
kilometers away on the mainland. There are a few hostels in
Venice as well, though none on the main island itself. Check
our list of recommended cheap Venice hotels for some very
well located and highly rated choices. Fortunately, much of the fun of Venice is just wandering around, so
entertainment doesnt have to break the bank. Many attractions are free or very cheap, so once you have a
bed and some food you can get by on very little. If you are a museum person, you might consider if the
Venice Card is right for you. Food is fairly expensive as well, and finding cheap meals is difficult, especially
along the main tourist walkways. Going deeper into residential areas can save you some money, which is
very true of drinks as well.

As picturesque and lovely as it may be, Zurich is tough for
travelers on lower budgets. This is definitely a business city
with an emphasis on the banking crowd so most everything is
geared toward those on liberal expense accounts. There are a
few hostels in Zurich, and even though they are quite pricey at
least they keep the city within reach of the backpacker set, for
a night or two at least. Hotels in Zurich are notoriously
expensive as well, with prices rivaling those in Stockholm and
London. Once you have a bed things can get a little better, as
transportation can be affordable, especially by just walking or
using the free bikes offered during summer. Most of the attractions are reasonably priced as well. Food can
be tricky as most of the proper sit-down restaurants will charge outrageous prices. There are many street
stands selling sausages and such, so at least filling and affordable meals arent completely out of reach.
Drinks are quite expensive in bars and restaurants, but weirdly, they are fairly cheap in supermarkets
