Caution: Enclosed and Gasketed U L Listing is invalid if:
1. Open optical assembly is used.
2. Hook, loop or receptacle hook/box is used for

switched quartz instant/on safety ljghting where

momentary power interruptions or extreme voltage
dips can extinguish an HID lamp A single ended
quartz lamp is placed in the same reflector with the
mercury, metal halide, or Lucalox lamp
The quartz lamp will remain on until the HID larnp
reaches approximately 60% of full light output This
also rneans that ihe quartz lamp will come on when
the luminaire is initlally energized and remain on
until the HID lamp reaches about 60% ljght output

Wiring for said lamp is accomplished internal to
the ballast and therefore the quartz lamp voltage
(1 2O-volts) is independent of the lighting svste m
voltage. The standard offering willprovide ONE
quartz socket per HID fjxture. Two quartz sockets
are availallle on some ballast voltage configurations,
if required. Twin units would have only one quartz
socket per two oPticals.
Caution shoulci be utilized when sizing branch circuits with luminaires containing the swltched quartz

INSTALLATION AUDI BILITY

Method for Estimating H.l.D. Lighting lnstallation Audibility
Lighting System Noise Criterion (LSNC) Rating

INTRODUCTION
lncreased use of H.l.D. iightlng in commerc al and institutional interiors has shown a need for a more cr tical
method of rat ng the audib llty of a planned nstallation.
Satisfactory nsta lations can in most nstances be
achieved if the equipment is selected for compatib lity
with the ambient sound evels to be lou nd in the area due
to air condit on ng and ventilation, people, music, and
other equipment such as typewriters, cash registers, etc.
A new ight ng system no se rating method has been
formulated by G E to e nable the I g ht ng desig ner to make

this selection with a maximum of accuracy (so large

safety factors are not needed)and a minimu m of computation. The rat ng is designed so that only the m nimum

know edge of acoustics presented here is sufficient to

rate a planned nstallation.
The new rat ng is called the Lighting Systern NC Rating. A typica I rat ng is of the fo rm LSNC-45, LSNC-50, etc.
It is deterrnined by averaging measurements made on six

units of the type to be rated se ected at randorn from

those manuiactured. Genera Electric has shown that
suff c ent statistica accuracy requ res that six units be

tested. A recently adopted standard specif es that one

or more be tested. (See NEMA Pub cat on LE2-1974,
''HlD L ghtlng System No se Criteron LSNCI Rat ngs".)
Expenence has shown that audibility of a lighting system
does not depend on the absolute sound leve but whether
the hum is audib e above the ambient no se present in
the room. lf the hum blends nto the background noise,
the nstallation is inaudible. We say, in this case, that t is
masked by the background noise. lf the hum obtrudes
above the ambient, then the installat on may be audib e

or even annoying.

b ent is 35 dBA, the hum will be audible, and even possi-

bly annoying to some listeners. For an ambient in the

range 40 to 50dBA, the hum may or may not be aud ble
depending on the listener. This region is called possibly
audible on the Audibility Chart in Figure 1.
Note that often a contractor, consultant, or owner nspects an installation prior to occupancy. or even pr or to
completion of the air-conditioning or olher equipment
which w ll contribute to the background noise level.
Under th s condition the hum of the lghting system may
be annoying; while with completion of the job and w th
the normal act vity of the occupants th s will be reduced
to an acceptable or inaudible level.

CORRECTIONS TO RATING
FOR NON-TYPICAL INSTALLATIONS
Not allinstallations are 100 fc in a room with an acoustic tile ceiling, hard walls, and hard floor.
For those installations which depart from the lighting
or acoustic character of the reference nstailation used
as a basis for the rat ng, the I ght ng designer who wants
greater accuracy rnust apply several correction factors to

the basic rating assigned to the product. These correc

tions are !sually small so that the system contains
reasonabe safeguards agajnst misapplication. The iollowing is a step-by-step method of obtain ng these corrections to be sirnply added to the Lighting System NC
Rating assigned to the lighting unit.
L LSNC For the larnp/ballast/fixture chosen for the installation, look up the ratlng in the product literature. Suppose, for example, the rating is

2 L,

cand e level. Suppose, for examp e, the design

level is 200 fc rather than 100 fc. From Table 1

THE MASKING AMBIENT RATING

obtain the lum nation correct on factor

LE:+3. Revise the tota rat ng upward from
LSNC 42 to LSNC 45.

Specifically, the Lighting Systems NC Rating is the

minimum level of background noise which masks the
hum {rom a 100 footcandle installation of the units in a
typical indoor environment. The numerical rating on th s
rnasking ambient is g ven n terms of the noise cr terion
(NC) curve which describes t. From the definit on of the
NC curves this rat ng is sirnp y I dB less than the sound
pressure level one would measure with a sound level
meter (A-scale) in a room havinq such an ambient noise
eve . ln other words, if a luminaire is rated LSNC 42, the
minrmum noise amb ent wh ch will mask the hum of a
100 footcandle nstallation of such units is 50 dBA sound

lllumlngllon L6v6l,

Suppose a particular lamp/ba lastifixture unit has

been selected. The appl cation is a typica indoor nstallation having aaoustic t le cei ing. gypsum or concrete
block wails, and a vinyl tile or wood f oor. Suppose that a
light level of 100 footcandles has been chosen and the
des gner wants to know whetherthe hum frorn the installat on wlll be audible. He f nds from the product literature
that the rating for the lig ht ng unit to be used is LSNC 42.
ln Flgure l the dotted line has been drawn representing
such a system.
lf the LSNC-42 system rs installed in a typical supermarket or merchand sing store where the arnbient sound
levels range from 50 to 65 dBA, the hum will be completely inaudible as indlcated on the aud b llty chart (Figure 1)- lt, however. the room is a iibrary where the am

treatment from the typical room, the room reverbration correction tactor LR must be app ied
to the rating. The typical room has an acoust c
tile ceiling, wa ls, and floor. A wide range of

acoustic reflectances can be encountered

among practical interior surfaces. However,
significant corrections to the rat ng occur

prlmarily for highly reverberant rooms such as

gymnas um, swimming pool, and large auditorium installations. A good rule of thumb for
gyms and swimming pools is to add the correction LF: +10 to the LSNC rating. For almost all

other indoor installations, this correction is

small. Table ll shows the ranges of LF corrections for four primary classes of rooms.

INDUSTRIAL LIGHTING DESIGN GUIDE
The three most rnportant indoor industrial lght ng design cons derations are 1)adequate illumination evels ior
the task, 2) um naire brightness contro al h gh angles and 3) lighting uniformity.
Where good lighting un iormity is essential, each luminaire should prov de no more than 50% ot the total light evel
at any point on the work plane. Th s will assure that adlacent uminaires wilL contribute sufl cient light to wash out
any shadows and e m nate a hot spot under the uminaire The ght level produced by each Lrminaire is propor
tiona to ts nadir candela (candlepower directly below lum naire) and the rnount ng height squared.
(Nad r Cd)

fC
(r\,4H)'

This gu de wl I provide good lighting resu ts regardless of the space or type oJ job being performed. Where there s
no diffrcu t v sual req uirement the Nadir Cd can be increased u p to a po nt where each lumlna re prod uces 1007. of
the light direci y below the uminaire. Beiore making any compromise in the lumlna re spacing. be sure that th s
wil not mpair the performance of the workers in the space.

SUGGESTIONS STORE LIGHTING

For open store areas, the luminaire spacing is not
critical but should not be much greater than the
ceiling height. When merchandise is stacked on
6-foot shelves, luminaires should be located over
the aisles. This produces the highest aisle lighting
level and the best lighting uniJormity. lf the
luminaires cannot be oriented to the aisle spacing,
lhe maximum spacing perpendicular to the aisles
can be determined as shown below:

lf there is a choice, it is better to increase the

luminaire spacing along the aisle rather than away
{rom the als le.
Select the lamp-lumina re combination on page 51
that provides ihe desired lig ht level. The maintained
illum nation level can be calculated from the lamp
inforrnation data given on pages 40 and 41. A light
dirt depreclation of .94 is suclclested. The i lumination levels are based on a large open area. For aisle
lighting the footcandle values shou d be multiplied

by .9 for the Duraglow and Econoglow luminaire

and.85 for the Lowmount and IVinimount
luminaire.
Open luminaires produce the greatest accent and
sparkle on the merchandise. They also produce the
lowest ceiling brightness. Enclosed luminaires
produce a softer store appearance and increased
ceiling brightness. Luminaire types are olten mixed
within'ihe store especially where the ceiling height
is dropped to 10 feet.

Luminajre spacing should be close to the ceiLing

height above the desks. This limits the luminaire
types to the lower lumen output lamps. lllu m in ation
levels can be estimated from the tables on the next
page. For smaller of{ices, multiply these values by
.7. For maintained illumlnation levels use the
majntenance factor formula given on page 41.
The luminaires should not be located in front

oJ the
desk. The best location is beside and slightly behind the desk. Each office should be lighted with a
minimum of two lu m inaires. Open lu m inaires where
the lamp brightness can be observed directly are
not recommended for general office lighting. They
can be used, however, for corridors and for accent
lighting.
