YEAR 4 CAMP- ONLY 2 DAYS IN THE
CLASSROOM
Learning Intention:
Text structure: we are using our knowledge of
text structure to understanding how we form
meaning from what we are reading.
Whole Class Reading: Immersion into
different text structures: Provide small
groups with 5- 6 different text structures.
Encourage groups to classify what text type
they think each one is with an explanation
of choice. Come together as a whole class
and have a discussion of text features of
each.

Solids, Liquids, Gases: Put items on a table at
the front of the class and ask students to
suggest different ways they might classify
(sort) the objects (e.g. size, shape, colour,
weight, natural vs man-made, buoyancy).
Draw their favourite meal or a meal they
recently had, including a dessert and a drink.

Discuss the properties of solids, liquids and
gases. Discuss the effect temperature can have
on the state of each. Present the problem
A scientist was in his lab and accidentally
knocked over some jars. This resulted in the
oil mixing with the water and the salt mixing
with the sand. The scientist needs to separate
the sand from the salt and the oil from the
water to use in his experiments.
What can he do to separate the two mixed
substances?
