Mr Jonathan Bishop
Sent via email to [www.whatdotheyknow.com]
Dear Mr Bishop,
Thank you for your information request dated 17 November, and received by the
University of York on 18 November 2015, concerning the protected characteristics of
University staff. Your request has been handled under the Freedom of Information
Act 2000. I can provide the following information in response to your questions.
Can you please provide me with the following information. I would like to have
access to data on protected characteristics of the following groups of staff:

Part-time administrative staff

Full-time administrative staff
Part-time managerial staff
Full-time managerial staff
Part-time academic staff
Full-time academic staff

I am happy to discuss alternative ways of making this request in order to stay

within statutory limits and protect the rights of third parties. For instance, the
university may collect monitoring data in a different form, or in addition, to the
protected characteristics in the Equality Act 2010.
Under the Equality Act 2010, the following characteristics are protected
characteristics:

age
disability
gender reassignment
marriage and civil partnership
pregnancy and maternity
race
religion or belief

sex
sexual orientation

Of these, the University holds data about its staff in respect of:

age
disability
pregnancy and maternity
race (in the form of identified ethnicity and nationality)
sex

We group staff in the following way:

Academic
Research
Teaching
Support, of which they may be
Administration (administrative roles at Grades 1 to 5)
Management and professional (administrative, managerial and
professional roles at Grades 6 and above)
IT and technical (roles whose main focus is the provision, support or
advanced use of IT or electronic equipment)
Operations and facilities (roles with a practical focus usually not
performed in an office setting)
Technicians (roles providing technical services and support for
laboratories and workshops)

In responding to your request, we are providing numbers of staff in the academic,

administration, and management and professional categories described above.
Information on the Universitys grading structure is published at
http://www.york.ac.uk/admin/hr/resources/pay_scales/
All figures are based on a headcount as of 20 November 2015, except for the
maternity figures. These are for the 2014-15 academic year (September to October).
The statistics in the tables incorporate the HESA rounding strategy to prevent the
disclosure of personal information about any individual.
(a) 1 and 2 are rounded to 0.
(b) All other numbers are rounded to the nearest multiple of 5.
