In a laymans term classrooms are places where people, typically one teacher and a number of
learners, come together for pedagogical purpose (Allwright, 1992: 267). However, apart from
their physical location and pedagogic function, Tudor (2001) notes that classrooms are also
social environments i.e. language lessons can be understood as social events based upon social
relationships and social interaction. Classroom life is what teachers and learners make it. At the
same time, classroom life is what they make of it, and what it makes them.
In order to ensure the best utility of the available time and resources at hand, one of the key roles
for teachers is the management of learning. Classroom management simply refers to this
organizational and directive function. Many a cases, classroom management decisions such as
following a lesson plan, classroom interaction, varying the pace of teaching etc. are taken in
haste. Management is particularly necessary in large, diverse, mixed ability classes and the
classes where the focus of the lesson is primarily on task-based activity.
