It would not be irrelevant of a few words about the nature & scope of the MULASAR-

-VASTIVADA VINAYA.the text goes to define how the unity of the SANGHA was disrupted
just after the few years of the Parrinirvana of the Thagata.
Further it remarks that the MONKS were confused in regard to the real meaning of the
DHAMMA. The CEYLONESE chronicle makes it clear that the BUDDHIST SANGHA was
passing through the internal conflict & disorder.
On the Whole,the conditions were not favourable to the SANGHA. Lastly ,it came to be divided
into the TWENTY DIFFERENT GROUPS.
