Learning Targets/Objectives:
The students will explain that plants can only survive if their needs are being met by
completing an exit ticket on plant needs.

1. The needs of a plant exit ticket
1. Collection of the exit ticket
2. Guided notes on the needs of a plant

3. Discussion questions asked throughout the 3 and 4. Checklist (see attached)

4. Planting (students will plant 3 lima bean
seeds, one in rocks, one in soil, and one in a
plastic bag with a paper towel for observation
in weeks to follow)

look like before it grows (now/beginning)
what will the plant look like as it is growing
(middle), and what will the plant look like
when it is finished growing (end). At least 1
sentence and a picture to go along with the
sentence)
Assessment Scale:
If the students score a 4 out of 4 on the needs of a plant exit ticket they are considered
proficient, if they score a 2 out of 4 they are considered basic, if they score a 0 or 1 out of 4
they are considered below basic.

Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies:
Yesterday we talked about parts of a seed and what their jobs were and
sang a song about plant needs, today we will be learning about what
plants need to survive just like in the song.
Have the students pull out their song and place a copy on the document
camera of What do Plants Need
Review of the song What do Plants Need by singing it through two
times

Guided notes will be handed out to all students
A PowerPoint on needs of a plant will be presented to the students as
they fill in their guided notes

and review the four needs of a plant. Students can read
the poem independently in centers and highlight the
needs of a plant as they read.
Use the pocket chart sentence cards for shared or
independent reading. Complete the sentence Plants

A fill-in-the-black worksheet and drawing worksheet are
included to further review the needs of a plant.
