Industrial Internship
September 2013 April 2014
Strategic Research Department, PETRONAS
7-month industrial internship successfully completed in PETRONAS. Assigned to PETRONAS Strategic Research
department, Corporate Strategy and Risk division. Based at the PETRONAS Twin Towers, Kuala Lumpur. Gained
experience as an analyst with sound understanding of oil & gas market dynamics, key drivers of the oil & gas
industry, and technology advancements impacting the industry in the medium- and long-term. Tasks assigned
during internship include analyzing daily oil prices and forecasting medium-term price trends, producing
datasheets on global crude grades for internal use, and monitoring global events in oil production, processing
and refining. Internship project involved analyzing the impact of electric vehicles on global oil demand.

Academic Projects Undertaken

2014
Final Year Project; Effect of Bit-Rock Interaction on Drillstring Dynamics
Studied the impact of vibrations on drillstring rate of penetration (ROP) as well as the impact of bit-rock
interaction on the occurrence of drillstring vibration. Determined the best combination of input parameters
such as rotary speed and weight-on-bit (WOB) to achieve highest ROP.

Mechanical Systems Design Group Project; Designing a Modular-Based Compact Topside for an Oil
Production and Processing Facility
Worked in a team of final year mechanical engineering undergraduate students to study and propose a modularbased, compact topside design for a floating production, storage, and offloading facility (FPSO) according to
accepted engineering standards and in-line with relevant design codes as well as current trends in offshore
production facilities design.

Flow Assurance Group Project; Optimization of Desanding Hydrocyclone Separator Performance

Utilized ANSYS computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software to study the effects of varying fluid flow rate
ranging from stratified to slug flow over sand separation efficiency in a Bradley-type desanding hydrocyclone.
Project tasks include generating the geometry of the hydrocyclone, mesh independence study, steady state
simulation and transient simulation.

2013
Engineering Team Project; Designing a Dynamic Response Speed Bump for Roads
Worked within a team of various engineering disciplines to design, build, and demonstrate a working prototype
of a smart dynamic response speed bump the Dynamic Speed Breaker (DSB).

Heat Transfer Group Project; Designing a Solar Water Heater

Conducted design calculations for a theoretical solar water heater. The calculations were done for heat radiation
from the sun and glass cover, heat convection by the surrounding air, and the required length of the pipe for
the water to be sufficiently heated.

Control Systems Group Project; Pumped Storage Flow Control System

Modeled, analyzed and improved a pumped water storage flow control system using the concepts of root locus
and frequency response techniques.
