ACI Building Code on reinf.

The ACI Building Code requirements for steel reinforcement on concrete construction are:
Deformed Billet-Steel Bars for concrete reinforcement shall be governed
1
by the provisions of ASTM A615. If number 14 or 18 steel bars meeting this
specifications are to be bent, they shall also be capable of being bent 90
degrees at a minimum temperature of 42 deg. C around a ten-bar diameter pin
without cracking transverse to the axis of the bar.
2

Rail Steel Deformed Bars-See ASTM A616. If bars are to be bent, they shall
meet the bending requirements of ASTM A614.

For Axle Steel Deformed Bars-refer to ASTM A617.

Bars and rod mats for concrete reinforcement shall be the clipped type
conforming with the specifications under ASTM A614.

Plain Wire for special reinforcement shall be cold-drawn steel wire for concrete
reinforcement as provided for in ASTM A82.

Welded plain wire fabrics for concrete reinforcements shall conform with the
specifications of welded steel wire fabric ASTM A185. Welding intersections
shall be spaced not farther apart than 30 cm. in the direction of the principal
reinforcement.

Welded deformed wire fabric for concrete reinforcement shall conform with the
specification of ASTM A497. Welded intersection shall be spaced not farther
apart than 40 cm. in the direction of the principal reinforcement.

Wires and Tendons in prestressed concrete shall conform with the specifications
for the uncoated Seven Wire Stress-relieved strand for prestressed concrete
refer to ASTM A416 or ASTM A 421. Strands other than A416 or A421 may be
used provided that they conform with the minimum requirements of these
specifications and have no properties that make them less satisfactory than
those listed under A416 or A421.

Grade B of specifications for welded and seamless steel pipe. See ASTM A53.

10

Specifications for Structural Steel - ASTM A36.

11

Specifications for High Standard Low Alloy Structural Steel refer to ASTM A242.

12

For High Strength Structural Steel - ASTM A440.

13

For High Strength low alloy structural manganese vanadium steel ASTM A572

14

High Strength Low Alloy columbium-vanadium steel of structural quality see

ASTM A572.

15

For High Strength Low Alloy Structural steel with 50,000 psi or 344,750 kPA minimum
yield point to 10 cm. thick refer to ASTM A588.

Page 37

ACI Building Code on reinf.

The ACI Code further provides that, spacing of the lateral ties shall not exceed the following
1.
2.
3.

16 x the longitudinal bar diameter

48 x lateral tie bar diameter or
The least dimension of the column
