QUESTION 1(a)

WAN NUR FATINI SYAHIRAH

BINTI W. DAGANG

PROBLEM STATEMENT:
In the rectilinear motion of a particle, the acceleration can either
be positive, negative, or zero.
FIND:
How or when these three situations occur with the aids of a
diagram(s).
DATA AND DIAGRAM:
a>0 m/ s2
a<0 m/ s2
a=0 m/s 2

THEORY:
ASSUMPTIONS:
SOLUTION:
The positive value of acceleration indicates that the velocity
increases. Its mean the particle is moving faster in the positive
direction or it is moving more slowly in the negative direction.

The negative value of acceleration indicates that the velocity

decreases. Its mean the particle is moving more slowly in the
positive direction or it is moving faster in the negative direction.
The zero value of acceleration means that the velocity is constant
either in positive direction or negative direction.

QUESTION 2(a)

WAN NUR FATINI SYAHIRAH

BINTI W. DAGANG

SOLUTION:
Rectangular (x,y,z) coordinate velocity and acceleration are
resolved into x,y,z components.
Normal-Tangential (n-t) coordinate velocity and acceleration
are resolved into normal (n) and tangent (t) components.
Tangential coordinate is parallel to the velocity while normal
coordinate is toward the centre of curvature.
Polar (r- ) coordinate velocity and acceleration are
resolved into radial (r) and transverse ( ) components. Radial
component is parallel to the r while transverse component is
perpendicular to the r.
Cylindrical (r- -z) coordinate motion is described using
the unit vector

R,

and k.

and

is the radial

and transverse direction in the horizontal xy plane while the

vector k which defines the axial direction, is constant in direction
as well as in magnitude.

QUESTION 1(b)

WAN NUR FATINI SYAHIRAH

BINTI W. DAGANG

PROBLEM STATEMENT:
In a mechanized production process of ball bearings, the bearings
move on the horizontal track with the acceleration given by
2
a = kx m/s where x is in m. The ball bearings would then
reach end B and fall through the 100-mm-diameter hole. Knowing
that
2
a = 1 m/s when x = 0.25 m.
FIND:
i. the range value of u if the ball bearings were to enter the hole
CD,
ii. the corresponding time of flight from B to the hole CD, and
iii.
the corresponding range of distance d required.
DATA AND DIAGRAM:
a=kx m/s2
d CD =100 mm
a=1m/ s2
x=0.25 m

THEORY:
v =v o + at
1.

2.

a t2
s=s o+ v o t+
2

3.

v 2=v o2 +2 a(ss o )

ASSUMPTIONS:
1. Horizontal motion has an acceleration, a = kx m/s

.
2

2. Vertical motion has an acceleration, a = -g = -9.81 m/ s .

QUESTION 2(b)

WAN NUR FATINI SYAHIRAH

BINTI W. DAGANG

PROBLEM STATEMENT:
In a simple mechanism design, the horizontal motion of the piston
rod CD of the hydraulic cylinder is used to control the rotation of
link AB about A in a limited range through the connecting rod BC.
At the instant shown where AB is horizontal, the piston retracts at
a constant rate of 5.6 m/s.
FIND:
i. the angular velocity of link AB and BC, and
ii. the angular acceleration of link AB and BC.
DATA AND DIAGRAM:
v CD =5.6 m/ s

THEORY:
v C =v B + v C /B
1.
2.

aC =aB + aC / B

ASSUMPTIONS:
1. Rotation about A for link AB is counter-clockwise.
2. Rotation about B for rod BC is clockwise.
