LETTER FROM TAMI & GRANT
Mentoring is BIG today but it isnt a new idea. The Bible is full of mentors and mentees! Jesus
spent his time on earth mentoring a small group of guys to impact the world. You can multiply
your ministry by unleashing men, women, and teenagers to mentor students one by one!

Starting a mentoring ministry isnt rocket science, but it sure can feel overwhelming to think
about starting this effort to reach the youth in your church. Thats why this resource was
writtento give you start-to-nish practical help on running a ministry that might have more
impact on your youth than any other event or program.

A one-on-one relationship with a caring and faith-lled adult can make a world of difference
to a young person. Showing love, offering a listening ear, having fun, sharing real faith, and
helping them see their purpose in lifethese are but a few of the life-changing gifts mentors
give their mentees.

We dont pretend to be experts at this, but weve learned enough through our years of working
with mentoring programs to help others learn from successes AND failures. Keep in mind, your
church size doesnt matter. In fact, we urge you to do a mentor program whether you have no
youth ministry or a huge one. And heres some good news for youth pastors: You dont need
to budget for thisother than funds for a few photocopies and some cookies and coffee for
mentor meetings.

We hope you nd this resource useful and effective. It was written for both youth pastors (like
Grant) and church volunteers (like Tami)anyone who has a heart for teenagers and loves
God. Passionately search for adults in your congregation who can provide lasting and valuable
friendships to your churchs young people and your communitys teenagers and who will at the
same time reap more blessings than you can possibly imagine!

Tami Wright is the volunteer coordinator of Mentoring on Purpose at Saddleback Church, Lake Forest, California. She
and her husband, Larry, have worked as volunteer youth ministry leaders over the yearsLarry tting right in with
the students and Tami trying to provide some structure! They have two daughters, Amy married to Philip and Mandi
married to Erin, and a grandson, Caleb. Tami is passionate about serving God, helping teenagers, and spending time
with Caleb!

Dr. Grant T. Byrd is the Minister with Students at 1st Baptist Church of McKinney, Texas. He is the minister with
not to or of, because the students at the church serve alongside him! Grant has been in student ministry for
more than 25 years. He has an incredibly beautiful wife (Jill) who has put up with him for 20 years, a teenage boy
(Keegan) who keeps him honest, and a wonderful daughter (Darby) who wants to be a teenager TODAY! Grant is
passionate about Jesus, his family, teenagers, and the Dallas Cowboys!

LETTER FROM DOUG
Dear youth ministry friend,

Thank you so much for caring so deeply about teenagers and knowing whats so vitally
important and rewarding. Im grateful for your leadership!

In my opinion, there are few things as rewarding within youth ministry as seeing teenagers
become young adults who OWN their faithjust writing that gets me excited! Im not sure
many things in ministry can compare!

I think every youth worker wants to see teenagers maintain a vibrant relationship with God and
be a committed follower of Jesus as they grow older. Unfortunately, this isnt happening in the
large numbers that wed like. I dont have all of the answers, but I do know one of the answers
is to develop a team of caring adults who eagerly mentor and spend time with teenagers and
rsthand demonstrate what it means to be a mature follower of Jesus.

So many teenagers lack strong role models in their lives, and even the most loving parents often
feel overwhelmed as they strive to raise Christ-like kids in todays culture. The church has an
opportunityand an obligationto focus its efforts on strengthening families. When a mentor
comes alongside to offer support and encouragement not only does the teenager benet, but
so does the rest of the family. Hows that for a win-win situation? In fact, throw in some more
wins because of how the mentoring relationship helps the mentor and inspires growth and
depth within the body of Christ!

Thats just one of the reasons why Im so excited about this resource from Tami Wright
and Grant Byrd. They know what theyre talking about! Years ago I asked Tami to develop a
mentoring program that would surround our youth ministry. I desperately wanted it, but I didnt
have the time to develop and lead it. Tami did and she did it as a volunteer. Shes amazing!
Also amazing is Dr. Grant Byrd! Dont let the Dr. fool youhes a full-time youth worker who
is just really smartone of the nicest and respected youth workers I know who is serving kids,
families, and the church in Dallas. Together, Tami and Grant will guide you as you consider
the purpose of a mentoring program, how this kind of program can make a huge difference
in your church and community, and what it takes to get things started. This is tremendously
helpful material!

Id encourage you to read this material with a team of leaders or parents. Find at least one other
person with a similar passion for seeing teenagers become young adults who own their faith.
This material is ready for your leadership to adapt it to your setting. If youve ever used any
of Simply Youth Ministrys Start to Finish resources, you know that youll nd these pages
stuffed with practical ideas based on years of experience with mentoring ministries. Youll be
ready to go!

Im praying that God will help your mentoring ministry impact the lives of countless teenagers
and families in your community!

Blessings,

Theres a spiritual benet from healthy mentoring, too: A mentor

But is there a place within your youth ministry for mentoring? Why
set up a mentoring program if you already have a vibrant youth
program? Why bother if you have wonderful small groups for your
teenagers?

How can you possibly add another activity to your already

overworked youth ministry team? How can a mentoring ministry t

Who can start this ministry? Who will support it? Who will serve as

This book will address many of the how to questions for creating
