The OEM advantage is our overall engineering approach to engine design incorporating all components together as a system and knowledge of how each component plays a critical part of that system. EMD utilizes all gained knowledge in design, testing, and field analysis over the many years of producing, installing, and maintaining EMD engines. EMD’s OEM components are designed to meet the toughest applications from extreme temperatures and altitudes to heavy loading and load cycling; EMD knows what it takes to produce durable and reliable components. EMD does not stand still; we continuously improve our products based upon our latest engine designs requiring even more durability at even higher horsepower ratings. Developments and process improvements applied to our latest 710 engine components are also integrated into our 645 engine components to make them even better. We know what it takes, we know what our customers need, and we have been delivering those successful products continuously over the last 85 years. Non genuine products are built upon copying old designs without any knowledge of key product characteristics that make them perform and taking shortcuts that greatly reduce service life. Premium new and remanufactured EMD power assemblies applied in the Power, Marine and Industrial Market have a life expectancy of 30,000 hrs depending on duty cycle, The OEM advantage is in the knowledge, experience, and persistence in producing the most successful medium speed 2-cycle engine in the industry. Around 75% of the powers assemblies provided to our markets are OEM remanufactured products, which include the remanufacture of both the cylinder head and connecting rod. In. comparison of EMD OEM remanufactured products to non OEM parts, only EMD has the process, performance, and engineering knowledge to bring existing parts up to the specifications needed for today's higher horsepower engines. Connecting rods go through a detailed step by step remanufacturing process bringing critical dimensions back to new specifications which includes magnetic particle inspection and the use ‘of new fork rod baskets. The specifications that connecting rods are remanufactured to are ‘often more stringent than those when they were originally manufactured. Therefore, there is no ‘comparison of which will perform better, a new non OEM connecting rod built to unknown tolerances or specifications (most likely copied from a rod we produced over 10 years ago), or a remanufactured OEM rod rebuilt to today's new specifications that will perform in the most demanding applications, EMD does analyze non OEM product as cores come in, and data shows that non OEM rods on their first (and perhaps only) life cycle has double the critical defects as OEM remanufactured rods on their 2nd or 3rd life-cycle. Double the defects found upon remanufacture means double the defects most likely running in an engine, Cylinder heads also go through the same rigorous requalification procedure including magnetic particle inspection to ensure the same continued operational performance as a new cylinder head. EMD has used the same cylinder head casting source over the last 25 years and has worked out the critical design details through many iterations over the decades resulting, casting dimensions and material that provide the most optimal strength, ductility and thermal fatigue resistance to ensure reliable operation upon remanufacture. Non OEM suppliers have been known to source parts from various countries over the years, yielding variations in material and dimensions along with reduced service life.
