Started in March 1952, the Tappan Zee Bridge has grown old and
needs to be replaced.

The Old Tappan Zee Bridge has multiple features that give it its
structure. To remain above ground and not in water, the Tappan
Zee Bridge has many piles. These piles go along the entire length
of the bridge. Piles are made by driving down deep into the
water and rock where the pile will be located. Once passing
several layers of soft and hard rock, the Pile is then ready to be
rested in place and cemented down into place. Once this
happens at the bottom, the piles wont move. At the top, the piles
are ready to handle the weight assigned to them. This is the
process that was assigned to the old Tappan Zee Bridge.
The bridge consists of many nuts and rivets. The total number of
rivets and bolts are in the thousands, but not specified.
The new Tappan Zee Bridge is going to be built right next to the
old one. This is going to happen because it will cause less
congestion of traffic. If one bridge is standing while the other is
being built, traffic would flow smoothly; just like the average day
to day traffic. If the bridge were knocked down, a major traffic
jam would occur.
The new Tappan Zee Bridge will also have symmetrical tower
foundations on top of the bridge that extend down deep into the
water/rock. These will be constructed after the screw piles are
tested and completed.
The project is a success due to the fact that there is a lot of soft
and hard rock layers provided beneath the waters surface.
