EDU 371
Assignment 8: Eliminating Bullying
Bullying takes place in all grades and all locations. It takes place in the classroom, on the
bus, at recess, and online; it can be found anywhere. It can also take many forms, such as calling
names, talking down to others, hitting, and taking things from others. In my 5th grade classroom,
bullying will not be tolerated. During the first offense, students will be warned about their
behavior by being taken aside and the situation will be discussed. The student will be told that
that type of behavior is not accepted or tolerated. The student will have to tell the person that
they bullied three things they like about that person. They will also apologize. The teacher will
oversee this exchange to make sure it is done kindly and correctly. If the behavior continues,
there will be further consequences.
During the second offense, the student will have to do all of the things they did from the
first offense, but they will also have to go talk to the school counselor. By talking to the school
counselor, the student will be able to find the root of the problem and hopefully solve the issue.
The students parents may be getting a divorce and so the student may be taking that anger and
sadness out on other students; this is not acceptable. The counselor can help them work through
those emotions and come up with different ways they can release their anger and sadness. Their
parents will also be informed. During the third and all following offenses, they will be sent to the
office. There they will discuss with the principal what the consequences are. They could receive
a detention or be suspended; depending on how many offenses they had received. These policies
are set in stone and are followed so the students know that bullying is taken seriously and isnt

acceptable. Parents are also notified, starting with the second offense, and continuing with all
those that follow.
This plan will be introduced to the students on the first day of school. They will know
what happens at each stage and how to get help because there will be a bulletin board with this
information on it. A video will be shown on the first day to help explain what bullying is.
Students will learn that they should first tell the person that is bullying them to stop because its
not acceptable. If the bully doesnt stop after two times, then the teacher or other staff member
should be informed. They can tell the teacher verbally or they can write it down on a form. The
form will include the students name, the name of the person who is bullying, the date and
location of the bullying, and an explanation of the bullying. If the student verbally tells the
teacher, then the teacher can fill out the form while the student is telling them. Its important to
have each incidence documented. The teacher will then talk with the person who is bullying, as
explained above. Also on the first day, the students will be able to share their ideas about how to
prevent bullying. These ideas will be written down for all to see and added to the bulletin board
about bullying. Students will also be asked to sign the non-bullying contract below. These
contracts will be hung up around the room to remind students to help end bullying.
The bullying policy will be reviewed on the first Friday of every month. Students can
share about how they have helped prevent bullying by being kind to one another. They will make
sure to not share any names when they are sharing their experiences. If students have been
bullied and they havent told the teacher yet, they can also fill out a form so the teacher can see
what happened. By reviewing the policy each month, students will know that bullying is a
serious issue and wont be tolerated. Each month, we will also discuss the different types of
bullying so students can become aware of each kind and be on the lookout to prevent it. During

open house, this bullying policy will be explained to the parents. They will also receive a letter
explaining the policy, along with the consequences listed. The parents will be notified when their
child is being a bully as well.
Some strategies I will use to reduce bullying in my classroom would be to hang
encouraging posters on the walls. They will have messages that encourage students to be kind to
one another. Another thing I will do is have the bullying policy readily available to the students.
It will be hanging on a bulletin board in my classroom, along with the forms for the students to
fill out if they are being bullied. This is to make sure the students can always see the policy and
be aware of it. They will hand the forms to the teacher if they are filled out, so no one else sees
them. A third thing I will do in my classroom to help eliminate bullying is by rewarding those
that help stop bullying. Students may nominate classmates that they have seen help stop bullying.
I will also nominate people that I see helping to stop bullying. Then once a week, I will draw two
names that were nominated and they will get to choose a prize from the prize box. It wont be
anything big, but it will help students know that I and other students appreciate their help in the
fight against bullying. Another thing I would do to help eliminate bullying is by being aware of
the students and their activities. I need to take every piece of evidence about bullying seriously to
show that I mean business. Students will know that bullying is unacceptable in my room and that
consequences will follow if bullying occurs.

Non-Bullying Contract
I, ___________________________, promise to be kind to all my
classmates. I will not call other people names, be rude to them, steal their
things, or physically or emotionally harm them. I will praise everyone and
do what I can to bring a smile to their face. If I see other people bullying, I
will step in and ask the bully to stop. I will also make sure the person who is
being bullied is okay. If necessary, I will seek out a teacher for further help. I
know bullying is not accepted and I will not let it happen in my classroom
and school. Bullying is harmful and I dont want to harm others, I want to
help them.
