Identity Exercise

On questioning ones identity

I had once written for my thesis in creative nonfiction a list of things that I am as a
person: a double major in Math and Creative Writing, an Atenean, a science high school
graduate, an eldest daughter, and a Filipina. Such identity mapping can only outline the facts
that do not change; however, an identity is nothing that has ever been definite in establishing
oneself in relation to his or her surroundings. There is no saying how an Atenean or a Filipino
should act, or that an eldest daughter or a double major should never be undermined by
expectations. The only thing that is constant in me as a person is the way I question my own
identity: is this what it really takes to be myself?
