Grade: 9
Date/Day:
Equipment
Specific Objectives
By the end of instruction, students will able to identify the importance of the digestive
system
By the end of instruction, students will able to identify the main organs that is involved
with the digestive process
By the end of instruction, students will be able to correctly label the structures of the
digestive system and their individual function
By the end of instruction, students will able to identify and relate how the organs in the
digestive system work together to help digestion and absorption.
Society of Health and Physical Educators Standards
Standard 1: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease
prevention to enhance health.
Standard 4: Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to
enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks.
Standard 7: Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and
avoid or reduce health risks.
Common Core States Standard
SL.9-10.1 Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one,

Teaching Cues/Description

Lecture

20 Min

Students will be given a KWL worksheet that they

will place in their class binder.
Students will be asked to fill out the KWL
worksheet for 8 minutes about what they currently
know about the digestive system
Students will be asked to share what they already
know and what they want to learn about the
digestive system
Ask students
o Aside from being hungry, why do we eat
food?
Digestion is important for breaking
down food into nutrients, which the
body uses for energy, growth, and
cell repair.
o What is the digestive system?

Process of digestion

8 Min

Activity: Roll Through the

Digestive System

10 Min

Activity: Teacher Ingestion

and Digestion

10 min

o What are the different parts/organs of the

digestive system?
o Refer to interactive webpage to review the
structure and its functions
Mouth
Teeth
Tongue
Esophagus
Stomach
Liver
Gall Bladder
Pancreas
Small Intestine
Large Intestine
o When does digestion begin?
How does digestion work?
What is the process?

The students knowledge with the digestive process

will be reinforced by showing them an interactive
webpage and a video displaying how the food travels
from the mouth all the way to the anus.
Students will be with a partner and each group will
be given a worksheet and a dice.
Different types of coins can be used as playing
pieces.
Student takes turns rolling the dice.
Follow the directions on the space where they land
First player to travel all the way through the whole
digestive system is the winner.
Remind students that the game is very similar to
the process of the digestive system

Divide the class into 5 groups and spread around

the classroom.
o Mouth
o Esophagus
o Stomach
o Small Intestine
o Large Intestine
Teacher will be the food, and he will review
students on what is happening on each part of the
process.
As food walks through into the mouth, students
will have their hands clasped up and down: Food
being grinded and tear. Saliva helps with
mechanical/chemical breakdown becomes bolus

Illnesses and Diseases with

the digestive system

Review

15 Min

Food then goes into the esophagus, students line

up in two lines and high five the food tunnel like
in basketball games
Students representing the stomach will surround
the food and walk in a circle as the food is bumped
around.
o Food becomes churned and digested using
gastric juice, and other enzymes becomes
chyme
When teacher says ready students from the
stomach will pass the food into the small intestine,
where the food is tugged on. (Representing the
small intestine pulling out the nutrients, vitamins
minerals, lipids, proteins, and carbs).
What is left behind of the food is pushed into large
intestine (absorbing water and salt) and pushed
out.
Do this several times by allowing each group to
rotate as different organs.
What happens when you do not chew your food
properly?
o Indigestion=Reflux, heartburn,
constipation
o Carbohydrate digestion begins in mouth
o Weight Gain, if you eat too fast, you are
prone to taking too much calories than you
might have even realized.
o Chewing aids in weight loss.
Why is it not recommended to lay down right after
you eat?
o Body absorbs food most efficiently when
we are in an upright position
o May develop Gastro-Esophageal Reflux
Disease (GERD) in which lower esophagus
fails to close off properly after you have
eaten something
o Makes it easier for acid to come up to the
esophagus/throat causing digestive issues.
Causes of Stomach Ulcers
o Stomachs protective layer or upper part of
small intestine is broken and hydrochloric
acid causes a hole.
Show Internet resource
o Lactose intolerance
o Celiac Disease
Distribute Worksheet
With the help of the illustration, students will
explain the pathway of food and explain what

happens in each organ.
