EXPERIENCE PAPER ON GAWAD PLARIDEL AWARDEE
FRANCISCA BABES CUSTODIO Being part of a culture or group that is, in a way, threatened by a perpetuating culture of hierarchy imposed by somewhat imperialistic influences by the more dominant metropolitan areas like Manila and Cebu, I admire Maam Babes use on the integrity of regional identity as an element in honing the art and discipline of radio. In doing so, radio became more familiar and approachable to the masses - it became more accessible. Her emphasis on Waray culture was a notable feat such that programs like Siday inculcated a sense of being and relevance to the overall growth of the medium despite the impending culture of a misguided sense of nationalism. For many years, the feat for national identity has been problematic. Coming from [an often marginalized group in] Mindanao, two cultures one imposed by the North, and one from the Visayans threaten, and maybe even question, our relevance on the national scene. Its always a question on where do we strike a pose on the greater picture of that Filipinos or should we even smile? Only few would dare be on duty when the worlds most terrible typhoon comes and hit landfall, but Maam Babes resilience during and after Typhoon Yolanda is very noteworthy. Such dedication to her craft proves her worth up that stage holding a golden sculpture and having the privilege to embody that prestigious distinction of being a Gawad Plaridel Awardee.
